AIBU?

...to panic more than slightly at this pregnancy weight gain?

I feel disgusted with myself and am at a loss as to how to explain it.

At 24 weeks I've gained two stone exactly. I put this same amount on over 40 weeks when I was pregnant with DS, three years ago, but this time I near-on ballooned from day one.

I'm not overeating, just eating (mostly) healthy meals with the odd snack. I'm still running (albeit slowly) and doing body pump and circuits classes a couple of times a week. I genuinely don't understand how I've piled so much weight on so quickly, and it's bothering me a lot.

Compared to when I was pg with DS, I'm eating less and exercising more. Yet at this stage with him, I'd gained 7lb.

Anyone experienced similar? And if so did you lose the weight quickly afterwards? I'm really panicking that I'm going to be stuck with stones to shift after DD is born - and who only knows how much more I'll gain in the next trimester. Help!

Oh, and for full info - I'm 33, was 9st 7lb before becoming pg, at 5ft 6ins. Now 11st 7lb and resembling an overinflated beach ball.

(I also realise that it sounds like I'm complaining about being pregnant, and I really don't intend it that way. This baby is very much wanted, and I'm quite ashamed to admit that the weight gain is bothering me so much. It sounds so shallow).

I never paid much attention to weight gain during pregnancy - as long as the midwives didn't tell me off, I figured it was probably fine.

I did lose the weight fairly easily after having DS (second child) - I was fully breast-feeding, looking after a toddler and made a point of taking some long walks with the buggy so that helped.

Honestly, don't worry about it. You will lose any excess, if you want to once you have settled down after having this amazing, wonderful little being you are incubating!
Don't be ashamed about being bothered by the weight, you aren't alone. Maybe there is tonnes of amniotic fluid or something. Who knows?!

Have you been referred for testing for pregnancy induced diabetes running?
What does your midwife say?

Breastfeeding really helped me to lose weight very easily after both my pregnancies.

Idefix - no, I haven't been tested. I've mentioned it to two different midwives and they've both told me there's no need to worry. They're probably right.

Breastfeeding did help me shift the weight after DS1, and I'm hoping it'll work this time too.

Don't panic, if it helps I gained 5stone with three of my pregnancies and had lost it all by the time they were all 9 months. Have excelled myself this time round, 6.5 stone gain, he's 6 weeks old and have lost 4 stone already :) I get a lot of water retention!

I was doing well with my weight gain until the last few weeks. I think I have gained half a stone in the last three weeks alone. I am now 38 weeks pregnant and have gained a total of 2 stone and 4lb so far. I can't stop eating at the moment. I'm rubbish at losing weight and I am quite short so extra weight is really noticeable. I'm hoping that breastfeeding will help me to lose some of the weight.

I am sure they are right running, presuming your urine dipsticks are not showing up any glucose Smile.

I like cains idea too!

I've had 4dc and put on a extra stone each time with dc4 I put on 4 and a half stone. I really wouldn't worry about it I've lost most of it and it did come off quite quickly.

Pregnancy screws your entire body up for 9 months. Maybe it's messing with your thyroid since you have to eat for two?

I gained all my weight the first 20 weeks, then flat lined despite the baby growing bigger. But it melted off 8 weeks after she was born. Now I just have a few stubborn pounds I'm to lazy to do anything about trying to get rid of.

4st here Grin it went on loads quicker with dc2 than dc1 but overall wasn't that much more, maybe 1/2st. It hasn't come off as quick either, but it is slowly going (I think!) - dc2 is 4m. Hopefully you'll find it slows down a bit over the next 20w.

I put in five stone by the end of my first pregnancy, but I think a lot of it was water retention because my feet got huge and it all dropped off within about a month.

at 5ft6, you are only just over the healthy weight range for a non-pregnant woman. i really wouldn't panic. you retain fluid when you are pregnant quite often. it sounds like you are taking care of yourself and exercising. so just keep doing that and i'm sure itll come off very nicely afterwards.

You might have a heavy placenta (my friend's was huge) or be carrying a lot of fluid. Don't worry!

I think I put a lot of weight onon in my first pg but I looked fine. I was running a lot and had a massive placenta. If you're eating well and feeling well but just weighing heavy I wouldn't worry.

Maybe take your eyes off the scales and be guided by your body a bit.

I was going to suggest diabetes too, my urine dipsticks were always clear but a glucose tolerance test (ordered because DD measured big) showed it up.

Could you reduce simple carbs/sugars just in case? A healthy diet is not necessarily a diabetes friendly diet- many fruits and veg for example can increase blood sugar.

Just check this is not fluid retention.
A friend of mine had it and was advised to eat no animal products over a weekend, by her doctor. It worked and she felt much better.
What does your gp advise?

Thanks for all the advice, it's really helpful.

Pedant - I haven't seen my GP at all during this pregnancy, and have only seen the midwife three times. I mentioned my super-fast weight gain at the later two appointments (12 and 16 weeks) and it was shrugged off both times, possibly because my BMI was still "normal" at that point.

I'm tempted to make another midwife appt for before my scheduled 28-week one, to ask about diabetes.

In DS1's pregnancy I started at about 9st 2, went down to 8st 7 from first trimester nausea destroying my appetite, then in 5 months when food became tolerable again ballooned rapidly to 13st. At 5ft 2, I looked like a weeble with size 8 shoulders and a 43 inch waistline!
I lost it all within a year, and have actually long time settled lower than the original weight.

I think the starvation from the nausea combined with being very sedentary first from the exhaustion then from SPD messed up my metabolism compared to usual. The inactivity encouraged water retention, much of that sweated off in the weeks after the birth. He was a long and lean 8lb 10 (I had a couple of growth scans that predicted 9lb) and he had a great swimming pool of fluid! I had about 2st of me weight to lose after the easy weight settled after the first month.

With Ds2 I managed to keep more mobile on crutches and had much less water retention, gaining a stone less. The me weight after was the same.
