AIBU?

to be pleasantly surprised at/hope that this recent surge of sympathy for migrants seems to have shut all the Britain First propaganda down?

Just that, really.

I often go on the Britain First page and look in horror at some of the stuff they write. Also I have a few idiots people on my Facebook friend list who share all the bigoted racist guff that britain first (and other pages like it) post.

Anyway, since poor Aylan washed up on the shore and there has been an outcry of sympathy on all levels, political to personal, I have noticed a huge reduction in those stupid "britain is only for those born and bred" posts and statuses.

AIBU (or idealistic) to think these pictures/decisions will shut them down for good?

Nope my britain first facebook friend has been extra active re-posting them today, so I considered un-friending. Then I just reposted lots of charity and lefty stuff to piss them off

You go on the Britain First page and are horrified at what you see there.
Ok.

Try The Mail.

I agree, it's heartening.... I'm amazed at how fickle and suggestable the public mood can be at times...

Interesting how the Sun now appears to be all sympathetic to the refugees plight now, just only a few short months ago it's revolting columnist Katie Hopkins was boasting that showing the dead bodies floating in the Med wouldn't bother her a jot....

No they will get worse. Once we start taking refugees here

Most lefties want us to be ashamed of our country, Corbyn is expert at it. I am not ashamed.

There are two extremes and not many people fall into the middle. The emotional left and foul right. Neither seem very quiet at the moment.

I like my safe space of the rational centre.

I haven't seen much from Britain first recently, maybe I have finally managed to cull everyone on my Facebook friend list that posts that shit! Although some have definetly slipped the net with other posts I have seen from them Hmm

The mail has actually had some sympathetic articles in lately. Dare I say it but piers Morgan seems to be the at the forefront of that!

I do think you're being idealistic. My newsfeed today has been crawling with the likes of "I feel sorry for the refugees but we can't help them because we're full/we should be helping our own/we don't want more immigrants". It's complete hypocrisy. What people don't get is that they are doing what anyone else would do in their situation. Who wouldn't do what they can to ensure themselves and their families can live a safe and happy life?

It annoys me that some people still can't understand the horrors that these people have had to face and the lengths they have gone to get themselves and their families to safety. It's easy to say we shouldn't help them when we're sat in our warm, safe houses with plenty of food and clean running water, where we don't have to worry about stepping out of our front doors and getting shot.Hmm

A complete myth put about by the most rabid right-wingers. In my experience, it is in fact the rabid right that moan about our country most - they're constantly saying it was much better 60 years ago, it's going to the dogs, it's the laughing stock of the world, it's overrun with immigrants because no immigrant ever goes to any other country in Europe. The left tend to accept our country as it is, recognise the good things, and work to improve what is less good.

OP, please don't go on the Britain First website. They want the clicks, the more they get the more validated they feel.

Well I've just tackled an illiterate fascist on the Telegraph newsfeed and been called a "silly soman" and a "dopey cow" Hmm

And the I TV poll was running at 60% saying no to taking in any more refugees.

That has been my experience. I was amazed at the sudden change of heart. I do think that's what it takes for some to feel empathy.

The silent majority didnt want a labour majority and 300,000 signatures don't carry public opinion. Knee jerk reaction and an hysterical media. Weirdly most are not rabid right wingers they just don't much fancy labour in charge of the economy or immigration. Loving your country doesn't make you a rabid right winger.

Don't worry. When I do (rarely) view the Britain First page I do it on Facebook. I don't "like" the page or "like" anything they write, so they should not be getting any clicks from me.

As for the people saying I just need to not go on it - I like to know what I'm up against, if you know what I mean! And to prevent me getting too idealistic, I need to remind myself there are still people who think like that in the world

How do they get the clicks? When someone goes on my Facebook page I don't get a notification.
