AIBU?

To give up meat, not on ethical grounds

But on the grounds that too often these days, unless it's in burger form I have to chew it so long my meal goes cold. The problem is unless it's chewed into tiny pieces it gets stuck in my throat. Sometimes I can force it down after a couple of minutes, but the pork chop I had yesterday lunchtime is still lodged in my throat, meaning I can't swallow anything at all. Not even water. Or saliva.

It's horrible and I wouldn't wish it on anybody. Right, I'm off to try (again) to force it down with a wooden spoon (handle end, not spoon end :o )

I doubt you have any meat lodged in your throat, you might have the sensation of it. MEat wouldn't stick any more than any other food. Sounds like a psychological issue not a physical one.

You don't have a pork chop from yesterday lodged in your throat.

It does sound like you have issues eating meat ough, so giving it up might be a good idea. YANBU.

Yanbu to give up meat for any reason.

Yabu to think food is still lodged there. Either you have issues cooking meat (which then makes it tough) or eating, so if it makes you feel better then give it up.

You could learn how to cook meat properly.

It doesn't get wedged in your throat that way Confused.

The first time this happened was 5 or 6 years ago, and I actually went to hospital as I was a bit worried. Apparently I have a pouch in my gullet which, unless I chew food into tiny particles, catches food and makes swallowing impossible. I know there's food stuck there as I can taste the foulness of it as it (too slowly) decomposes.

This is the 6th or so time this has happened, and is the longest I've gone with no fluid since the first time. I'm sorry you don't believe me but that's life.

I think you should see a doctor again.
Your problem sounds very specialised.
I'm.not sure. You will get any help here.
I hope you fix this soon.
Oh, and give up meat if you like. Smile

Give up meat!

This is not an issue you should need to deal with (unless other food also cause it)

If you won't miss it what's the point in forcing it on yourself.

I have a different issue but it is also meat that causes it. I very very rarely eat it now (a few times in the last 12 years)

I don't have an issue with others eating it dp etc so why should anyone have an issue with me or you if we don't!

As for the medical issue it might be worth seeing if gp can help as again why should you deal with that.

Have you asked your GP if there's anything that can be done about the pouch in gullet problem?

But it's perfectly acceptable to give up meat, you don't need to have any reason at all to give it up.

If you want to stop eating meat for whatever reason then do it.

If people don't like cabbage or carrots or broccoli or fish then they just don't eat it. Giving up meat is easy, especially if you are only really giving up big chunks of meat and not getting worried about gelatine or rennet.

It's not compulsory to eat meat but you really should get your doctor to examine your throat just to be on the safe side.

Of course you can give up meat. But get that pouch sorted - that isn't right.

10 minutes ago I finally got my first fluids in over 24 hours. I'm going to try to replace the 21/2 pints of saliva and probably the same amount of sweat over the next few hours. I'm almost at the bottom of my first pint of orange squash. I might only get another 11/2 before bedtime, but shall carry on in the morning or if I wake in the night.

Any meat I eat in the future will be burgers from the local butcher, other than that I'll stick to vegetarian food, which I like anyway, having eaten with my vegetarian children.

That's sounds tough & scary, OP. I hope you are OK now.

Maybe your GP can refer you to a specialist

In the interim, you can eat burgers, so presumably meat balls and mince meat dishes like spag bol, shepherd's pie ? That would be plenty of meat. You don't need great big slabs of it.
