Like the site used to allow.
I'd like a clarification on mn policy on this.

Why do you say that?

BrendaandEddie · 31/08/2015 10:00

I think that might have made mums need to classics! Also what about John Ronson and the thread about him? Can we not slag of celebrities any more because mum is busy trying to get them on the web chat?!

BrendaandEddie · 31/08/2015 10:02

Scheherazade goldsmith. Ouch. Remember that?

Is this about the rita ora thread?

not in the spirit of mumsnet

PAH!

BrandNewAndImproved · 31/08/2015 10:21

I agree, I've been on this site for years off and on and there's always celeb slagging off threads. I'm not sure where all the staunch defenders of never criticising a famous person have come from.

If there wasn't supposed to be opinions on them they wouldn't be celebrities.

I wonder if rita ora pr team had a word.

Samcro · 31/08/2015 10:27

well we arnt allowed to slag of cameron
so seems fair

BrandNewAndImproved · 31/08/2015 10:29

I thought the only person we had to be quiet about was gina ford shush

BertrandRussell · 31/08/2015 10:32

People didn't slag off Jon Ronson, did they? What did he do to upset people?

Savagebeauty · 31/08/2015 10:32

I've just heard Kanye West is planning to stand for president
What a wanker

OurBlanche · 31/08/2015 10:33

It's probably not having opinions as such. But those threads do get quite evil. They do not reflect well on some posters and I suspect that MN occasionally has kittens about the possible fallout.

Ironfistfunkymum · 31/08/2015 10:42

Seems like that is the case.

Funny thing is the last thread deleted the person its about would of loved the attention.

The Cheryl Cole thread is still going, is that because she would only smash your face in for a funny look but not shag your fella?

BrendaandEddie · 31/08/2015 10:50

There was a big thread about John Ronson's voice, which apparently quite upsetting in real-life, so much so that he got his wife to come to the thread and post on his behalf

OP posts:
BrendaandEddie · 31/08/2015 10:51

???? I wonder what kind of criticism you can put on a thread say about Fiona Phillips? But she's not whinge bag? Is that misogynistic to o?

OP posts:
Squooshed · 31/08/2015 10:51

His voice is very droney to be fair.

Apols Jon.

BrendaandEddie · 31/08/2015 10:52

Wrt Rita. Twitter hates her. Don't think she'll be worried about mumsnet

OP posts:
OurBlanche · 31/08/2015 11:05

I have no idea who John Ronson is.

And I doubt Twitter hates anyone.

Maybe it is such voyeuristic twaddle that makes some people queasy about such threads!

YetAnotherHelenMumsnet · 31/08/2015 11:07

Hi all, as explained on the previous thread we received a lot of reports saying that the discussion of Rita Ora had strayed into really quite unpleasant territory and that it was no longer in the spirit of MN.
We took a look, thought about what the thread would look like if we removed the particularly egregious posts (answer = swiss cheese) and, figuring that leaving it up for two days already had been enough for everyone to have their say on the matter of Rita Ora, we removed it.
Every one of these things is a judgement call, based on our feelings and the feelings of those who are reporting in. Sometimes we'll get it right, sometimes we'll get it wrong. Sometimes a celebrity thread will stray into speculation that we think just goes too far beyond what we think of as the spirit of the site and we'll remove it. It doesn't mean all celebrity talk is banned, of course.

LazyLohan · 31/08/2015 11:09

ITV are probably an advertiser.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 31/08/2015 11:10

I remember the Lily Allen thread, Mumsnet pulled that but not before some pretty vitriolic stuff had been posted.

Keira Knightley has got a pretty torrid time too but those threads seem to be left til they die out by themselves.

motherinferior · 31/08/2015 11:13

The Goldsmith thread was great. We were supposed to be putting questions to her...and we did. Not our faults if she wasn't up to the level of political analysis on the thread.

NoStannisNo · 31/08/2015 11:21

Meh, some of the names that Cilla Black was called on here before she died were pretty horrendous, no one ever seemed.to care about that?

Coolforthesummer · 31/08/2015 11:26

The Cilla Black one was way more unpleasant than the Rita Ora one and I felt uncomfortable reading it.

There was one where posters listed all the celebrities they hated. Many votes for Amanda Holden and Philip Scofield.

ITV are probably an advertiser.

Right answer. I wish they'd just be honest and say its for "commercial reasons"

It doesn't take much for someone to hit the report button on her, MN FURIOUS.

OurBlanche · 31/08/2015 11:35

And you really don't think that the comments can be vile and utterly unnecessary?

The Cilla Black thread was a prime example of the nastiness anonymity can promote. As with many of the celeb threads I wondered how some posters reconciled their comments with their supposed humanity!

Birdsgottafly · 31/08/2015 11:40

It's very different to not like someone, because of their actions, to not like someone and this is usually a Female and bring up her supposed sexual past, or what colour/nationality is, should be questioned by moderators.

Surely the OPs have enough friends to have a evil gossip with (which always tends to be about other Women), or perhaps they don't, I wonder why.
