AIBU?

to be pissed off about people who complain about how tired they are

I am not including parents with babies or young children. Or people with older children with disabilities.
I mean people like my colleague who bounces into work saying she's really tired because she's only had 5 hours sleep. This is a one off for her, she says she sleeps well normally but we should make allowances for her today.
I would donate a limb/kidney for 5 hours sleep. Average between 3-4 hours and don't expect allowances to be made for me.

If she says she's tired then presumably she's tired. If you are tire and don't say so that's your choice. If you don't want to make allowances for her then don't.

It's not her fault you are lucky to get 3-4 hours sleep a night.

Whilst I can sympathise YABU. People get tired for all sorts of things. SIBU to expect special allowances, though.

I am with you on this one. I get severe sleep envy and rage!!

YABU. Different people need different amounts of sleep. If she says she's tired presumably she is tired. If she doesn't have a small baby she won't be used to lack of sleep.

No need to be a martyr.

YABU. I had 6hrs sleep last night and right now I'm so tired I could vomit.

Yabu, if she's tired she's tired. Doesn't mean if you have small kids it's any more reason to be more tired and no one else should complain.

YABU people need different amounts of sleep to not feel tired and function properly.

I'm tired all the time but it doesn't bother me when people say they're tired.

YABU it's not a competition.

My favourite quote ever comes from a PG Wodehouse book, Uncle Fred in the Springtime. On one character complaining about something, it is noted that the other character 'felt like Noah listening to someone complaining about a spot of drizzle' (or words to that effect!).

I cling to that on such occasions as it makes me smile and stops me being a snarly mess (hopefully). YANBU to feel that way but WBU to say it - I was always knackered pre-children if I had less than 5 hours sleep - little did I know!! Still remember my horror at ante-natal classes hearing that my baby would wake every 3 hours at night for a feed - and then desperately wishing she'd sleep for 3 hours in a row when she finally got here and wanted to be held all the time (glad to say that's no longer the case).

My sympathies though, lack of sleep is a killer. Hope you manage some this evening.

Yabu. I have sleep averse children and haven't had a decent sleep in 6 1/2 years. I'm still happy to commiserate with a friend who's tired and don't even begrudge them this much if it's from a decent night out! It's not a competition, it's just human to want to spout a little if you've had a bad night and are not used to it.

Yabu. I need 8 hours or I can't fully function the next day. I can 'cope' on 6, but yes - I'll probably moan I'm tired. Being tired is really crap, it just puts a downer on a whole day. Anyone is entitled to feel that way. I'd go as far as saying if you chose to have kids, you almost have less reason to moan - we all know younger ones keep you awake, you still chose that life. I would never deny a parent a moan though, as much as a child free, healthy person.

Yabu

I had terrible insomnia earlier this year and was living on half the sleep I need to function. It wasn't by choice, I did everything I could to help and it has now resolved. I didn't expect or get special treatment, but i did indulge in the odd moan. Which I think I'm just as entitled to do so as parents of small kids, maybe more so since they chose to have kids and presumably realised sleepless nights might be part of the package.

I am age 53 with 2 grown children. Some days i am so tired i can hardly function, despite having slept well the previous evening. I have no idea why. DH never seems to be tired despite sleeping less than i do. Tiredness is not a competition and people can be tired for so many reasons. If your colleague is tired then she is tired. If you only get 3-4 hours a night that is not her fault, is it?

I think people who are used to bad sleep sort of adapt to it whereas if it is an unusual thing then it impacts upon them in a different, maybe more obvious to them way.

And I say that as someone who hasn't had a full nights sleep since DS was born nearly 6 years back!

Report
Thurlow · 30/08/2015 20:05

YABU. Though I do get why it must be annoying. But the thing is, if you're fortunate to get 8 hours a night, then getting 5 is going to leave you absolutely shattered.

It's like pain - you just can't compare it with someone else.

Grin We're an older workforce with adult children, that's why I discluded parents and young children in the OP.
I know it's not a competition, I never mention how much sleep I get, but it is irritating when people yawn all day and bang on about how tired they are.
I'm absolutely not a martyr Grin Far less than the wingers who moan about their "lack" of sleep.

My two year old has been waking once a night and after him sleeping through for nine months I feel worse than when I was feeding him four times a night!!!
I'll adapt again. But it goes to show sleep and tiredness aren't an obvious relationship.
