AIBU?

To think Debra Meadon is a nasty piece of work?

She's one of the investors on Dragon's Den. She frequently comes across as hot tempered, mean and vindictive. I was watching a recent episode and cringed at the way she treated the couple seeking investment.

link 15 minutes in.

She reduced the woman to tears.

Horrid.

Should be Meaden.

There was a similar thread less than a fortnight ago. Most posters pointed out that it's all an act to create drama and tension. Reality TV is not reality.

Is this deja vu or wasn't this exact same thread posted about 2 weeks ago.

FWIW Debra Meaden seems like a very pleasant, hardworking woman. She was an absolute hoot on Murder In Successville and if you're the same person who posted before, I think you need to "move on", if you're not, please accept my apologies, but still "move on" Grin

Don't you think people treat her more harshly because she's a woman? Each of the dragons can be very cutting; I don't think she's worse than Peter Jones. Everyone accepts he's tough, don't they?

She's great in real life. It's TV. It's not real.

Lol, cross posts.

Someone really has it in for DM at the moment, she was the subject of a nasty letter in Radio Times this week.

The nail stroking thing again? leave the woman alone.

I followed the last thread but can't find it now. Was it you op?

You don't know her. You have seen a TV version of her.

Didn't see the other thread. I don't think I'm being harsher on her because she's a woman; the other dragons can be total shits but I've not seen them reduce a woman to tears.

And it is real in that the entrepreneurs are real people seeking investment and not there to be bullied and humiliated.

I can fully understand why she withdrew her investment when the comments of the female in that couple made it pretty clear that they didn't really want her!

I think she's fabulous. People are coming in, asking for her hard earned cash - she has every right to be tough on people who haven't got their shit together.

You have seen a TV version of her

And that's what I'm discussing here. Just like we talk about the media impression we get of all celebs; Chery Cole, Peter Andre, Katie Price

I think she comes across very well. Never forget that the show is going to be heavily cut, so for all we know there was another 30 minutes of ridiculousness before she got annoyed.

Randomly lost the second half of my post there...
You have seen a TV version of her that had been edited by the producers to make the most interesting viewing. That means bun fights. And as a pp says, if you want the investment you should be totally on top of your numbers and prepared to give a robust defence of your business. Asking hard questions is fair game.

She's always seemed lovely when I've seen her on tv.

Are you the op from the last thread? How weird.

Just found the other thread. Posters sneering at a grammatical error made by the OP Hmm

The woman she reduced to tears was on the ball with figures and knowledge of her business - she just got a bit excited at the prospect of two dragons getting involved.

There are two posts referring to have/of, the bulk of the rest are supportive and complimentary to DM, mostly from people who know her personally and professionally, seems like very few agree with you op.

Someone in the previous thread knew the woman asking for money in Dragons' Den. Maybe she heard about the thread?

The woman should have known how it goes in the den - you have to know the skills the dragons can bring to the deal, you have to know who does what and you have to be respectful to them - they won't want to work with you if they are your second choice - who would? That's the mistake the woman made. If she'd seen any programmes beforehand she should have known not to do that.

I think that what she says is sensible. I haven't seen it much recently, so can't comment on your particular incident, but generally she doesn't take shit kindly and nor should she.

I think the woman thought the new dragon (can't remember her name) was going to make an offer and, knowing that Debra often collaborates with other dragons, got excited and jumped the gun. Debra threw her toys out of the pram and humiliated the woman. It doesn't matter how nice she seems in person; it doesn't give her a pass to behave that way.

Does she need 'a pass to behave that way'?
Really?

In my opinion Debra Meaden was perfectly justified in her reaction. Attempting to excuse the woman on the basis of her being over excited and jumping the gun is pretty weak, she is purportedly a professional business woman who should know how pitches to potential investors and customers are done.

The three male dragons were incredibly harsh and DM was the only one who showed any faith in them or their business.
