To buy ds a coat in asda

Ds is 7 and going into year 3 - seen a nice coat on the George website but some of the kids in his class are starting to be a bit brand minded. Ds isn't YET. I could always get one in h&m but the asda one we had last year was fab. Was hoping for another year of cheap and cheerful before the dreaded brand obsession

You don't have to allow or encourage brand obsession, you know.

DD1 is 14 and actively dislikes brands.
DD2 has a lovely coat from asda this year. It's gorgeous.

You may get lucky, neither of my DS's were brand obsessed ever. Still aren't - they think it's "sad" to care about brands.

I think a lot of the "brand obsession" is caused by parents really. What 7 year old understands or cares about brands anyway!

You would be ridiculous to not buy a coat for a 7 year old from asda because some other children have been taught to be snobby. Very ridiculous. Because it would teach your son to be just like that and then he would expect branded. My advice, dont even start with the branded stuff. He can ask. He doesnt have to get. Especially at 7! Youd be setting yourself up for it wouldnt you?

i would buy from asda if it was good quality and likely to last....

Fwiw when it comes to brands i follow the mantra "if [insert brand] want to advertise their name on my chest/sleeve/back they can pay me for the priviledge" more fool those who do it for free. Mugs.

Just buy the Asda coat if you like that one, I'm confused by your H&M comment though, H&M isn't a brand and you'll probably pay just as much in Asda as you would in there

I think you should hold off on the brands as long as possible. Luckily my girls were never bothered by brands,mif they saw something they liked they weren't bothered if it was from somewhere cheap like H&M or somewhere more expensive like Urban Outfitters, they never looked for brands or labels. I think once you get to secondary school it can be seen to be a bit 'chavy' ( sorry I hate the word too but couldn't think of another ) to dress in brands and labels.

Except for Converse....apparently no other shoe will do

I have got DS various coats from asda before which have been great and lasted very well. It's surely just 'a coat'?

My ds wouldn't give a fig. Not do any of the kids their age (yr 4). It is parent driven at that age. Ds has a coat from last year that is asda brand and he will be wearing it again this year! Still fits so I sknt see why he needs anew one!

He is 7yo and a coat is a coat, as long as it keeps him warm and dry there should be no other worries.

Where I am wearing brands usually means you're poor but that's Glasgow. Only ever see neds in big bold logos.

I like to get a good deal and save money but also Don't care for false economy either. If it fits fir what he needs get it.

If he needs something really waterproof or warm for after sports clubs or scout camps etc then don't not buy him A good branded coat on the basis it's a brand.

dd2 has an asda coat she's 4 and going into reception and it's fine fir what she needs it for.

i think it doesnt matter if some random 7 year olds know about brands. That doesnt mean you have to go along with it, unless you think those 7 year olds might bully your ds about it, which is a seperate issue, and still doesnt mean you need to buy a designer coat

7 year olds don't notice brands and they certainly haven't a clue about supermarket vs high street.

My little boy had an asda coat last year yet his friend had a Barber coat. None of them was any of the wiser, I guess friends mum just felt better!

my 11 year old going into year 7 is totally brand unaware. I keep testing - I went as far as offering him a pair of (on sale) Converse last time he needed trainers and he looked at me like I'd gone mad!

Neither my 10-year-old nor my 7-year-old know or care about brands. They have opinions on styles and colours but that's it.

Ds2 has just bought himself a lovely winter coat from Asda. He is 19 and thrilled with his purchase!
