For FABRIC CLEANER
the sales assistant really tried to deny me fabric cleaner because I didn't have ID. I'm 26yrs old he said I could just be saying that wtf why would I lie it's not alcohol
I am a young looking 26 but I do not look like a teenager, was I being unreasonable to kick up a fuss?
The manager gave it to me the sales assistant refused.

Asda?

muminhants1 · 04/08/2015 12:24

It is age-restricted - but to under 18s. It's about time retailers stopped pretending everyone under 25 looks under 18! I wish! That said, I was once asked if I was 16 when I was about 21, although the person who asked me did so in a way that showed that they didn't really think that I was.

TheReluctantCountess · 04/08/2015 12:25

They have to be so careful as they could lose their job, and companies do set traps to catch them.

PercyGherkin · 04/08/2015 12:25

Did you ask why they were asking for ID (presumably it's a solvent so restricted for that reason?)

Do you have a problem with the principle that some things should not be sold to minors in case of abuse?
Do you have a problem with the Look 25 campaign to ensure the law is upheld and prevent the sales employee being done for a criminal offence and losing his or her job?

MrsLeighHalfpenny · 04/08/2015 12:27

Take it as a compliment, even though it's barmy that you even had to be asked in the first place. It's not the shop's rules.

RosePetels · 04/08/2015 12:28

I have no clue, This was in homebase, I showed him I drive so I must be over 16 but he refused and demanded ID
The manager just gave it to me straight away

I'm annoyed because he said I could just be saying that and lying, it was his approach

I do have a problem with the think-25 policy.

It's utterly nonsensical to refuse to serve a 30 year old who looks like (in a flattering light and with a ton of slap on) they might possibly pass for 24 years and 11 months- and that's if you're being generous. It does absolutely nothing whatsofricking ever to stop underage drinking.

Chattymummyhere · 04/08/2015 13:22

Should of gone to pound land. They don't id anyone. Asda refused me lighters at the fag counter yet had sold me alcohol Hmm so I walked across to pound land.

I'm object on the basis that when it's clear the person is 18+ just asking for id because you can is a pain and just to make them feel better. I've been refused alcohol with Dh both with id just because my little brother was with us. I could of understood if I was buying wkd but expensive wine and whiskey as if I'm going to give that to a 14 year old.

First time I ever got id'd was on my 18th birthday they had been serving me for 2 years prior without batting an eyelid.

ilovesooty · 04/08/2015 13:27

There are mystery shopping set ups to identify shop workers who don't follow procedure and they can lose their jobs. Try to put yourself in their shoes.

You got what you went in for. Exactly how minutes of your life did you have to waste?

PosterEh · 04/08/2015 13:33

I feel sorry for shop workers having to balance between offending people and doing their jobs properly. I think it would be much easier if everyone just expected to get ID'ed for age restricted products and just got over it.

LikeTheShoes · 04/08/2015 13:34

I got IDed for Balsamic Vinegar once.

At Spoons they have to be seen to ID you if someone somewhere might think you're under 25 every time (even if they saw your ID 5 minutes ago) its mad.

DadfromUncle · 04/08/2015 13:46

Yanbu it is pathetic and as usual inconveniences everyone without targeting the actual problem. I don't habitually carry any ID and there's no good reason why I should.

CassieBearRawr · 04/08/2015 14:01

Yup YWBU. Your problem is with the policy not the shop assistant. I wouldn't risk my job over some mardy cow with no ID either.

I wouldn't have expected to be ID'd for fabric cleaner to be honest but then I didn't expect to be ID'd for the cutlery set I bought from M&S either. I just went back the next day with ID.

kali110 · 04/08/2015 14:14

Yabu. It's not the shop assisstants fault if you don't have id.
I get asked for id everytime as i look young and im in my 30s.
It's not the staffs fault, they have To follow procedure.
It's not just the shop who gets in trouble now.
I wouldn't risk my job and a huge fine either!they do send in test purchasers now just to try to catch people out. I do think the policy is stupid, however i always take my id as i know it's not the staffs faul for simply doing their job.
They don't ask just because they can or because they enjoy it Hmm
I dreaded it.
I used to ask everybody as i am genuinely
I useless at telling peoples ages.
I could never go back and do that job i don't have the patience for the abuse.

MrsTattoo · 04/08/2015 14:40

Sometimes I still get asked for ID buying lottery/scratch cards - and you only have to be 16 to buy them! I'm 25, covered in tattoos, piercings, and a wedding ring - I definately do not look under 16! Hmm

Laugh it off. I find it funny now when it does happen.

bored1602 · 04/08/2015 14:45

Annoying yes, but if it's your job to ask for ID there's not a lot you can do, unfortunately people who work in shops simply aren't allowed to use their common sense because everyone's so afraid of being caught out.

I'd be more annoyed if I was following the rule where I worked and the manager came over and completely broke the rule, I'd feel embarrassed and a bit of a knob tbh.

That being said, very annoying situation - it's the fault of companies who apply blanket policies on things rather than giving their staff the freedom to use their common sense.

flanjabelle · 04/08/2015 14:45

Dp got Id'd for a scratch card the other day. He is 25 and looks at least that age. Smoking and past drug use have not been kind to him aging wise. he's got some grey hair fgs. (Hes very handsome by the way, just doesn't look 16!!!)

Talismania · 04/08/2015 14:47

Strange thing to be age restricted. What do under 18s who live alone do for cleaning stuff if they're not allowed it?

CassieBearRawr · 04/08/2015 14:49

"covered in tattoos, piercings, and a wedding ring - I definately do not look under 16"

These were some of my favourite kinds of reasonings. Because no one underage ever gets piercings or tattoos or wears jewellery Grin

bored1602 · 04/08/2015 14:54

Talismania I always wonder that - I'm sure plenty of 17 year olds live independently - I once saw a sign in poundland saying they wouldn't sell any cutlery sets to under 18s, so are they supposed to eat with their hands until their birthday?! Confused

Gets the sense that someone missed my point completely Hmm

bored1602 · 04/08/2015 15:10

MrsTattoo · 04/08/2015 15:13
