toddler shoes

So dp brought home some shoes for ds (22 months) yesterday that were given to him by a friend in work. They are quite nice but I'm a bit worried about putting ds in them bc they're aren't new. They haven't been worn much but I'm still wary of putting shoes on him that have been even a little bit broken in by someone else. I'm fully expecting that if I say to dp he's not wearing them he'll tell me to stop moaning and say he will be fine, and then probably put them on him anyway. How would you handle this? Am I overreacting or should I put my foot down and say not happening?

Give him the shoes, saves you both a bit of money, they're nearly new and your child will come to no harm from wearing Lightly worn shoes. Wash them or wipe them down, good to go.

DS2 gets DS1's minimally worn shoes and his feet have yet to fall off.

You're being a bit PFB, OP. Wink

Nope, DD wears second hand shoes all the time. When they're so small they're hardly in them two minutes, so it makes sense to save money and reuse.

I'm not sure what the issue is. That they're second hand?

toddler shoes should have no "breaking in" to be done, they should just be a wrapper around the foot, minimal sole, minimal everything.

So if they are not, if they are heavily structured and have formed to a foot, then you might have a genuine concern, but I doubt they are, such shoes are quite out of fashion these days. What ones are they?

My DS has second hand shoes (I love eBay!)
I think you are being a bit PFB.
Think about how many kids get hand me downs from elder siblings and cousins! Just give him the shoes Smile

I prefer them a bit worn, nice and soft :-)

Take toddler to show shop and get a fit check. If they fit, minimal wear by another toddler is inconsequential. If they don't fit then don't wear them. I would think it's more likely they won't fit.

Agree with above posts...

Have taken dd into several shoe shops in different local towns to "check her shoes still fit, as we have had them a few weeks now..."

Picked up a pair of clarkes doodles in a charity shop for a couple of quid. Virtually brand new. She hardly takes them off!

I am all for second hand everything and hate things going for waste. But when it comes to shoes, especially for a toddler who is still learning control on his feet and walking then I draw the line and always buy new for my toddler so I don't think yabu

Are they barefoot?

Report
littlejolee · 04/08/2015 16:36

He's not barefoot he has a few pairs of shoes that fit him well and I have always got him new shoes and had them fitted in Clarks/schuh. There's only very few styles that fit him comfortably because he has a very wide (g/h) width fitting. I think if he didn't have my ridiculously high arches (and the ankle pain that goes with them) I wouldn't be so worried. Think you have the right idea binit, ill take them to the shop and see what they say. If they give them the green light ill be made up and if they don't to the charity shop they shall go! :)

Agree as long as they fit they're fine. I used to work at Clarks. Toddlers are so light I doubt they wear shoes in like ab adult. I buy my toddler ds new and second hand Clarks and they are all fine. Although I found doodles not to be as supportive

Ebay recommends not buying toddler shoes second hand.

Don’t 1: Buy Used Shoes for Toddlers

Older children will need brand new shoes. Kids start walking and running a lot more when they’re older, and thus, will need shoes that can help support their growing bones and muscles. Used toddler’s shoes may be too worn or may not fit another’s kid’s feet. Older kids will need new shoes so they can break them in, allowing the shoes to mold to the child’s feet. Since arches usually start developing when the child is three years old, children over this age will need brand new shoes.

I don't know what I'd do, personally. My DD is also 22 months and I'm pfb about shoes. Not about much else, but then my dad's feet are gnarled from wearing the wrong sized shoes.

On the other hand, they also say this:

Do 1: Buy Used Baby Shoes for Infants and Early Walkers

Children grow so fast, which means they can go through a lot of clothing sizes in a span of a few years. While buying used shoes can save a lot of money, parents should limit buying used shoes for infants and early walkers. Toddlers and older children still have developing feet and bones, and used shoes would have molded to the previous owner’s feet. Wearing used shoes can hamper the feet’s development, because children have drastically different feet from one another.

Infants really only need shoes for protection and warmth, as long at the shoes cover the feet, purchasing used shoes is perfectly acceptable. Early walkers (around 12 to 24 months) can go through many different sizes of shoes, which means these shoes are hardly worn and have not had the chance to mold to the previous owner’s feet.

So I guess it depends on whether you count 22 months as a baby or a toddler!

I'd say two months away from two years old is deffo toddler, he started walking at one and has had about 8 pairs in ten months (multiple pairs at a time though)

I would have second hand for many things, but never shoes. I don't even pass them down between my own children.

I agree with elphaba- there's definitely a little bit of pfb going on here. He'll be fine. My ds has had several pairs of used shoes and he still has both his feet too. Quids in OP!

i would never give my children second hand shoes. I dont think it is good to put a toddlers delicate foot into a shoe that has potentially been moulded to another child's foot. Shoes are not expensive (apart from clarks!) so why do it??

I wouldn't buy second hand shoes for my toddler. Or for anyone else.
If I slip my teenage dd's shoes on (exactly the same size as me) they feel awful. New shoes do mould to peoples feet quite quickly and just feel wrong for someone else's feet.....

It's not being pfb. Those soft leather pram shoes wouldn't bother me as they don't walk in them yet. They are just for keeping socks on ;)

From cruising to walking the shoes I agree with above. Wearing someone else's shoes is horrible as you can feel how they walk.

I don't think you are being unreasonable, I'm just the same.
Children's feet are growing all the time and in my opinion they should always have good quality, personally fitted shoes.
I would use hand me down clothes but I would ALWAYS go to a proper shoe shop and buy good shoes.
I dont let my 9 year old wear next shoes as they are not good for kids feet.
But heaps of people will think I'm being nuts.
