AIBU?

Not feeding guests?

Just wondering if I ABU.

Some friends are throwing a party. It's a big anniversary at a village hall and has been organised for months. They have lots of friends going. Most are having to travel quite a long distance and have booked hotels at £60+ for the night.

A few weeks back guests were told no drinks would be provided. Now it's clear they're not providing any food either.

I'm not really sure what the point is anymore. I would never arrange a party with no food or drinks! Do you think this is unreasonable?

How clear is it? I'm guessing they're providing nibbles rather than a full meal...? I can't imagine anyone laying on an empty hall.

Flaperon · 02/08/2015 21:17

No food or drink at all sounds bizarre.

ReginaFelangi · 02/08/2015 21:18

There's been mention of crisps.

I'm not sure it's fair to expect people to travel hundreds of miles, pay for a hotel and have to feed themselves apart from a few crisps to be honest.

I would send a friendly e mail just to enquire how much pop/wine/beer whatever you should bring but also ask if you should bring crisps/cake/nuts.
Actually on second thoughts..... I wouldn't go. Sounds shit.

ReginaFelangi · 02/08/2015 21:19

We've been told to take whatever we want to drink with us as there will be no drinks provided, not even soft.

My OH is providing the entertainment (for free) so we have to go.

What will people do all night?

TheOriginalWinkly · 02/08/2015 21:20

That is beyond rude Shock

DartmoorDoughnut · 02/08/2015 21:21

That isn't a party ...

WipsGlitter · 02/08/2015 21:21

That is pretty crap. If you can't afford to throw a proper party don't bother. Or do they just not have a clue?

cuntycowfacemonkey · 02/08/2015 21:21

God the only thing that would get me anywhere near a village hall is the promise of food. I am always shocked that anyone would not provide food at a party but remember one time being in Morrisons and the salad bar had a queue of very well dressed people lining up to get salads. Turns out they were all guests at a wedding where they had been since 10am and it had become clear there was to be no food at all Shock

Welshmaenad · 02/08/2015 21:21

I would buy lots of lovely drink and loads of tasty nibbly bits and canapés.

Then I would stay home and consume them on the sofa in my dressing gown.

AgentProvocateur · 02/08/2015 21:21

It's not a party, then, is it? It's just a meeting. I know this divides MN, but in my social circle, if you're having a party / wedding / celebration meal out and you INVITE people, you lay on and pay for the food and drink.

WallyBantersJunkBox · 02/08/2015 21:22

That's not a party. It's a meeting in the village hall. Grin

Just go to the nearest pub and have a get together.

Are these people for real?

tomatodizzymum · 02/08/2015 21:22

I think this is unreasonable and should have been made clear at the begining. There's nothing wrong with BYB, some snacks etc to invite people, wait until they booked and confirmed and then said oh by the way BYB, is a bit off.

ReginaFelangi · 02/08/2015 21:24

That's my thinking too Agentprovocateur

LaceyLee · 02/08/2015 21:25

You don't have to go. I don't think you should, it sounds like they're taking the piss. They are not 'throwing a party' just hiring a hall.

WallyBantersJunkBox · 02/08/2015 21:25

And then there will be those who don't understand or don't bother, proffering their polystyrene cup in the direction of your bottle, and dipping their greasy fingers in your crisp bag.

Set yourself up with a wine box and an oversized scotch egg and growl at anyone who comes near....

Do you need to bring your own chair too?

Wink

How odd Confused
Free entertainment, no food or drink, talk about a cheap do Grin

Zillie77 · 02/08/2015 21:28

Will there be music, or is everyone expected to bring milk jugs and washboards to play? I have a spare harmonica if you need one.

thatstoast · 02/08/2015 21:28

What kind of entertainment is your Dh providing? He better be good when he's faced with a room full of hungry, sober people!

ReginaFelangi · 02/08/2015 21:29

He's an impersonator.

Will there be electricity at this party, or is everyone expected to bring flashlights?

Don't forget to bring along some toilet paper, just in case.

LazyLohan · 02/08/2015 21:31

I think that's monumentally rude. Even if you were really struggling for money it would be doable to ask your closest family and friends to bring a dish each to cobble together a buffet. Or even tell people they could contribute to the buffet if they wanted to bring something. Even if you can't afford financially the effort to organise something is appreciated.

But just crisps is very rude.

ReginaFelangi · 02/08/2015 21:31

I'm not really looking forward to it anymore. Sad
