To wonder what the hell *does* break Facebook community standards

I saw some proper porn on Facebook today. Someone had tagged a friend in it and so it appeared on my news feed. I presume they had been hacked.

There was a series of pictures that were clearly pornographic, and some text about someone drugging someone. Full frontal genital penetration shots and the implication that it was rape as well. Really jarring when you're scrolling down minion quotes and kitten pictures.

So I reported it and clicked on the "sexually explicit material" option. I got a message back saying the post had been reviewed and judged not to contain nudity.

What the hell?! It's still there. I've heard about FB removing breastfeeding pictures and children in the bath, etc - how have they left this up?

I had a load of this on my feed yesterday because the hacker had tagged a friend of mine - it was really quite Shock porn but they did remove it quickly. Encouraged by that I reported something similar today involving two underage kids having sex in a toilet - but that, apparently, didn't contravene their rules.
Makes you wonder doesn't it.

BlackHillsofDakota · 30/07/2015 20:59

I know what you mean, I reported a picture of a gymnast mid air legs akimbo who's leotard had pinged open and she had nothing underneath - hence a full frontal legs spread picture of her bits. Apparently that didn't violate their standards either.

crustsaway · 30/07/2015 21:00

The thing has become too big to police. You probably need to do that yourself and just delete.

cleanmyhouse · 30/07/2015 21:02

I've reported some really graphic violence/animal cruelty videos and been told they didn't break standards. I was genuinely horrified to hear these videos were considered acceptable.

AbbeyRoadCrossing · 30/07/2015 21:03

The only thing I've successfully reported is swearing. I reported it because the person was being abusive in other ways but it appeared to be just a swearword that did it.
Ones I've reported about killing all disabled people for example are fine according to fb though

Thefacttheyact1234 · 30/07/2015 21:04

Yes I reported some nasty sn bashing. Nope not a problem Hmm

crustsaway · 30/07/2015 21:07

Why not just delete. The world is full of strange people. You can actually change your settings so you dont receive anything other than messages and feeds to do with who are on our site.

crustsaway · 30/07/2015 21:09

Whats with all this reporting? just change your settings. Its a tool for communication and there would need to be 1000 people there night and day policing the thing. Its called the internet.

Ishtar2410 · 30/07/2015 21:11

I reported one of those videos where a woman was flicking a towel at a baby; the towel was hitting the legs and torso. Baby was understandably crying.

Apparently it didn't contravene their rules Hmm.

Hobbes8 · 30/07/2015 21:11

I can just delete, but I thought it would be socially responsible to report as well. I understand it's reviewed by some sort of algorithm rather than an actual person, but there's nothing in this post but tits and genitals so I'd expect even a computer to be able to see that it's inappropriate.

OP posts:
crustsaway · 30/07/2015 21:12

computers cant see Grin

crustsaway · 30/07/2015 21:13

people find ways round machines.

Hobbes8 · 30/07/2015 21:20

Ok picky pickerson - I would expect a computer to be able to determine that it's inappropriate. And if it can't, then yes, they need to employ people to ensure that porn isn't visible on a massively popular website that is used by 13 year olds.

If I posted porn on here it would rightly be removed.

OP posts:
crustsaway · 30/07/2015 21:23

You cant "expect" anything on a computer, as I said, people have ways of bypassing this. You use a site like facebook and know the dangers in my opinion or you are really living in lala land.

TartanTrousers · 30/07/2015 21:25

I saw a very disturbing video of people in Africa being accused of witchcraft and thrown into a pit where they were beaten and burned alive. I reported it also and received a similar response.

I blocked and hid the post but some things you can't un-see:

crustsaway · 30/07/2015 21:28

The easy answer is dont use facebook then. Stop blaming a huge communication tool that can be infiltrated by "people". You will never ever do this and make a site clear of twats etc. Even bloody nassa got done Grin and think how much they spend in safeguarding.

Hobbes8 · 30/07/2015 21:30

Then why have community standards at all? Why have a report button? Why not let it be a free for all?

I use the Internet all the time and manage not to view porn.

Of course you can expect things on a computer.

crustsaway · 30/07/2015 21:35

Can you imagine on such a scale what this would incurr? any social media site would have to close. Manage yourselves really. Know that this is what happens. Know that there is not some individual behind a screen blocking every report. It probably gets done eventually but takes a lot of time. It's the same as being outside in the big bad world. Stop blaming media sites that are for communication.

Hobbes8 · 30/07/2015 21:42

I manage to walk around outside in the big bad world without seeing porn as well.

your argument would make sense if there was no report or review function available. But there is, and apparently Facebook has reviewed the explicit pornography and thinks it's just fine. It's not.

OP posts:
Hobbes8 · 30/07/2015 21:43

I'm sorry others have had to see distressing content as well.

OP posts:
crustsaway · 30/07/2015 21:43

Dont use the thing then... It happens because human beings can get round these things.

WoonerismSpit · 30/07/2015 21:47

ODFOD Crusts.

You just pop up on thread after thread falling over yourself to be a GF, sending multiple messages (lest you forget to put enough goadiness in your original missive)...doesn't it get boring?

Don’t want to miss threads like this?

Ah ok. Good plan. I'll make sure I don't see or speak to any humans any more, lest they thrust their genitals at me.

Tootsiepops · 30/07/2015 21:52

I had bestiality in my newsfeed the other day. Woman and a horse. I'm still shuddering. I reported it, but no word yet if it was removed or not.
