to park where someone places their own cone and "no parking here" sign

Around work with all the roads dug up now schools are off its difficult to get parking. Have to park on a public road. One person for at least a year always parks outside their own house by putting up their own cone and sign when ever they leave it. Legally would it be wrong to just move this back to their front garden (where it sits when not in use) and park there?

They have had it for at least a year and know disabled parking takes a while but if they genuinely need it they should of got it by now. The sign and cone is very weathered so probably been doing it for years.

If it is a public road then I'd move it. Someone used to do this opposite where I lived. If there were no other spaces I would just move it, nothing happened.

If you think it is because they are disabled then I think it would be mean to park there. nothing to stop you doing it though.

Does it specifically state they require disabled access?

If do, I'd leave it and park elsewhere.

My dd is disabled and we only have on street parking, luckily our neighbours are very considerate and it's not a busy street so we don't get randomers parking here.

We are not able to get a disabled parking bay, our council doesn't grant them to anyone, it's a blanket policy. When construction work was happening we put a sign in the window politely explaining and the space was left free wherever possible. Otherwise it's a nightmare.

No it says nothing about disabled, I'm just worried in case they do have a genuine reason. But then I kind of think its not up to them to determine they need a special space on a public road, someone else has obviously said no to them

A couple of people on my street use their wheely bins to mark 'their' spaces on the road outside their houses. If there is nowhere else to park I won't hesitate to move them.

Yep, just move them.

couple down my street do this, laminated sign that says 'NO PARKING' on it in an attempt to save their space on the road next to their house. Everyone else has to put up with coming home to see the space next to their house is taken by some other car- but not them?

makes me laugh when they have visitors they always park in 'our' space. So we don't take any notice of their hand made sign.

I'd be willing to bet they're not disabled, OP.

Just put the cone in your boot and take it away move the cone and park there.

They're causing an obstruction and using council/police property to do it.

I'd be concerned about mysterious damage to my car if I moved the cone to be honest, but it wouldn't be illegal to move the cone and park there.

A few years ago my Grandparents drove to the shops, couldn't find anywhere to park so had to move two cones someone had placed outside their house. They came back to their car a short while later to find someone had rubbed a block of lard across the windscreen. Took them absolutely ages to clear off their windscreen before they could safely drive home.

I'd be tempted to buy an old shitter with 12 months MOT, tax and insure it and leave it there for a year

You are totally within your rights to move it - public road is parking for everyone - parking in front of a dropped drive is a no no but other than that.

If they do do anything to your car, you can report them to the council/police - are there cameras on the road?

There is a bloke by our doctors who did this. Fair enough but he has a huge drive big enough for at least 3 cars and only actually appears to have one car.
Of course his cone and 'no parking' sign are like a giant flashing beacon of 'Park here' to me and I always moved his cone to park.

Best one was when I came home one day to find bloke across the road hammering on my neighbours front door (they didn't answer). Transpired their visitor had the audacity to park outside his house and his daughter was visiting and couldn't park. A quick glance of the street showed it was totally empty other than neighbours car.
Had to laugh as DH said 'Oh, is it taxed? Is it insured? Is it a public road?' as irate man got more irate by the minute. When it was pointed out he A)Didn't own the road in front of his house and B)He had a large drive and garage at the back of his house and C)There was nothing else in the street he stomped off.
If we need to move our cars round now to wash etc we always park there just to watch him angrily stomp around his lounge

It's illegal for them to block the public highway with the cone. I'd move it. But then I'm not precious about my car

Sadly no camers on the road, was thinking about buying a dashcam I wonder if it will has a security mode.

Would anyone really damage my car though? Would be very silly as I know where they live! I could shit through their letterbox if they damaged my car, not that I would.

@unlucky - Unless someone saw them do the damage there would be no proof it was who you thought it was. If you are thinking of removing the cone its best to probably guage what type of person it is that is putting it out. Couple of old biddies that rant but have no bite then move it but if more (how shall i say this?) trailor trash type then prob best not to mess with it.

We had a man who reserved the spaces in front of his house with cones on our street. Seeing the ugly cones used to annoy me, particularly as the houses on our quiet road have decent sized drives and there is no jostling for spaces!

I emailed our local council to politely ask if the cone thing was kosher one day. To my surprise they emailed me straight back to ask the house number and visited him the next day. No more cones!

Yep, report the use of the cones to the council OP. Good idea.

On the car damage issue, can you get or make a notice to leave on your dashboard (and at the rear window as well maybe) when you park which says 'This Car Has Surveillance Camera Security' or some such.

Buy an actual camera, or not, but few people would risk peering in and around the car to check for a camera before doing damage the car IMO.

My dashcam has a 'shock' sensor. If it feels motion it will automatically record for a few minutes. This probably wouldn't trigger if it was keyed though and as it only faces forward probably wouldn't be hugely useful.
