Savoury. I just seem to add it to everything, shep pie, beans on toast, Greek salad, chips and I can't think of anything it doesn't go on. I've only recently discovered it, but am I over doing it? Everything tastes a bit bbq

I agree, I totally overuse it too! Also cayenne pepper.

Mmmmmmmmm

Don't worry, you'll get fed up soon and naturally tone it down Wink

SwedishEdith · 29/07/2015 17:17

Agree with cayenne as well. Everything tastes better with cayenne.

SwedishEdith · 29/07/2015 17:18

Now I'm thinking about avocado on toast with cayenne sprinkled on top.

OhHolyFuck · 29/07/2015 17:19

Amazing on sweet potato wedges

DayLillie · 29/07/2015 17:20

marinate steak in it, with garlic and olive oil.

Lovely in a stew with tomatoes and thyme.

Loads in chilli (or get the hot stuff)

LooseSeal · 29/07/2015 17:22

When I was little my mum used to take me to a local Italian run cafe for lunch sometimes. I always ordered chicken risotto, it was absolutely delicious, really creamy and had this orangeish stuff sprinkled on the top that made it extra special.

When I got older I was always disspointed at restaurant risottos because they were never quite as good as my childhood favorite and never had the Orange stuff sprinkled on the top. It took me years to work out that the Orange stuff was smoked paprika.

MiddleAgeMiddleEngland · 29/07/2015 17:24

I agree - I've discovered it recently and now have it on lots of things. Sprinkled on top of cheese on toast is delicious.

FreiasBathtub · 29/07/2015 17:26

I went on an exchange trip to Germany when I was 16. My penpal's mum made me an open Emmental sandwich, topped with a sprinkle of smoked paprika.

It was the most exotic thing I'd ever tasted and when I got back I nagged mum until she provided me with the ingredients to make my own. Took some time to move her away from our traditional cheddar/pickle combo.

I still have it sometimes, when I remember how good it is. Mmmm.

DayLillie · 29/07/2015 17:26

A Portuguese friend of mine did the steak thing for me, fried it in butter, then poured the orange butter over the potatoes - bliss.

Hassled · 29/07/2015 17:27

It's hard to find these days, though, isn't it? I haven't seen it in Sainsburys the last few times it's occurred to me to look. Are we talking about the stuff in the red tin?

sadwidow28 · 29/07/2015 17:27

I only heard about smoked paprika when noeffingidea posted recipes for Margaritte on this thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/a2390780-to-wonder-what-the-fuck-to-do-now-Immediate-financial-problem?msgid=55815067#55815067

Quick Nut Roast

Equal amounts of chopped mixed nuts and dried stuffing mix. The cheapest way of buying mixed nuts is in the homebaking section, they're about £1 for a bag. A box of sage and onion stuffing mix is 15p (sainsburys basics). Just make up the stuffing, stir in the nuts and bake as usual.

This is nice cold as well, with salad or bubble and squeak

Lentil sausages

2 tablespoons of red lentils, to 1 teaspoon of crunchy peanut butter (basics again). Cook the lentils for approx 10 minutes until they go soft and mushy and as dry as possible. Add mixed dried herbs/spices (I like smoky paprika, but whatever you have in helps). When cool stir in peanut butter. Add a little flour/breadcrumbs if the consistency is too runny. This makes 2 sausages or 1 'burger' , so multiply ingredients for the number of servings you want.

I am totally sold on spicy paprika! How did I not know that it needed to be in my spice rack before now?

I am making burgers and sausages for a friends' vegetarian family who are visiting for a week from next Sunday!

Yay! for Spicy Paprika!!!!

Dh & I love it!
Yasnbu.

Koalafications · 29/07/2015 17:29

Yes, I agree that it's amazing on sweet potato wedges.

I add it into humous and have it on Ryvita.

SwedishEdith · 29/07/2015 17:30

Sainsbury's do their own version of it as well

And I've found tins of it in TK Maxx

Welshmaenad · 29/07/2015 17:38

I buy it in bulk in huge tubs in Makro Grin

trollkonor · 29/07/2015 17:40

Yanbu

Also smoked tobacco, that goes with me on camping and self catering holidays. Makes my morning scrambled eggs heavenly.

LoveVintage · 29/07/2015 17:42

Hmm DH and I are supposed to be having salmon for tea which I wasn't feeling like. Wonder if it's worth nipping to shop for smoked paprika to put on it and grill, maybe have with some avocado and crusty bread.

Would that work?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/07/2015 17:44

Lovely on wedges.

I do a veggie sausage casserole with it -

Fry onion and garlic plus a finely diced carrot and green pepper. Add smoked paprika, grainy mustard and honey. Add paprika and cook until the carrot is softening. Add a drained tin of butterbeans or green lentils, plus sliced veggie hotdog sausages and s&p. We have it with a dollop of soured cream, and either jacket potatoes or hassleback potatoes.

IHaveBrilloHair · 29/07/2015 17:45

You might want to try liquid smoke, that's good stuff.
I love smoked food.

unlucky4marie · 29/07/2015 17:47

Ooh I'm loving all the recipe suggestions! I got my SP from a wholesaler's - 8 pounds a kilo (Spanish though rather than the apparently better Hungarian ).

We are so lucky to live in a time where spices are cheap as chips.

I have smoked paprika on roast chickpeas, lovely and feck all calories.

FelixFelix · 29/07/2015 17:50

I add it to everything too. Sweet smoked paprika is my favourite.

I love anything smoked. DP has now mastered smoking meat in our BBQ so I make him do it all the time Grin

Allalonenow · 29/07/2015 17:51

I love that umami taste, brightens up all sorts, even baked beans or scrambled eggs, it's especially good in a dish of fried peppers, tomatoes and fried eggs.
