A parking one!

We have put in a new driveway and the council have dropped the kerb outside. However, they have failed to remove the markings that there used to be a parking space there. The markings are a bit of a mess as the old markings are there alongside the guides the council have put there to show where they are moving the parking space to.

A young girl has come along, parked her car, put her headphones in and walked off in the direction of the town centre. I didn't have time to run out and stop her and the headphones meant shouting after her wouldn't have done any good.

Would I be unreasonable to request that the council send a warden out to give her a ticket?

There is no way that she could have missed that she was parking across our drive. It's large and has a big car parked on it. There were 2 parking spaces there and our drive is bang in the middle... she has parked her small Fiesta in the middle too. So right over the dropped kerb with no attempt to leave any room for access. Had it still been a parking space she would be effectively stopping another car from being able to park there. If she had parked at the beginning or end of the bay we could have still got off our driveway.

So What would you do?

Ring the council. Dropped kerb = no no

holidaysareoverated · 29/07/2015 10:16

That's what I think but my husband thinks that because the bay markings are still there they won't come out.

That's their issue to be fair. They dropped the kerb it didn't complete the job.

Hey, whilst they're there.....

holidaysareoverated · 29/07/2015 10:21

Well I've reported it... now hoping a warden comes soon.

Be warned you may need a follow up call in a few hours if they can't be arsed haven't had time to come round yet

User100 · 29/07/2015 10:35

It's difficult, it's probably more the councils fault than hers. Frustrating for you I agree but if it's unclear what the markings are meant to mean it would be very unfair (and probably wouldn't stick) if they have her a ticket. I'd take photos and use it to point out the the council that they need to come and sort it out (which will also be of more help to you in the long run).

Jinglebells99 · 29/07/2015 10:43

I think the council is at fault for not changing the markings on the road marking out the bay. It sounds confusing and it will probably happen again and again until they change the road markings. Going after this one girl, isn't going to prevent others making the same mistake in the future.

holidaysareoverated · 29/07/2015 10:55

There is no way she could have missed that she was parking over my drive though... with my car on. Surely nobody would think that a marked bay would be in operation across a dropped kerb?

Just went out to put a note on the car to ask them not to block my driveway again. They have a residents permit! Whoch means that they won't be moving at 12pm when the restrictions kick in like I thought. So I may actually have to call and have them towed if they are still there when I need to do the school run.

OP posts:
dingit · 29/07/2015 11:35

School run?

thecatsarecrazy · 29/07/2015 11:40

Where are you op? School run?

holidaysareoverated · 29/07/2015 11:44

Nursery school.... not proper school.

I had assumed the girl was going into town and would be back before parking restrictions kicked in at lunchtime. Now I'm worried she has parked up and gone off to work. We are right near a main line station so she could be gone all day.

If it's a young girl she is probably confused if there are 2 bays over the drive then another 2 marked either side. The council need to sort it out.

Dropped kerb is a big no no but if she's nervous and new to driving she may not have noticed, especially if it isn't the norm on your street.

I am confused as to how you still have a school run though, thought all kids were on holiday now?

holidaysareoverated · 29/07/2015 11:56

Nursery school!

The new bays aren't marked yet there are just guide marks to show the contractors where to mark out. So the road looks a mess with white spray .... most people would hesitate as it's not clear what the markings mean. In any case if it was still a bay she has parked in such a way as to take up the entire 2 car bay for one small Fiesta.

She now has a ticket anyway as the wardens are out ready to pounce on anybody without a permit. I will remove my note as if she comes back she is going to realise she has parked badly without me needing to tell her.

I just hope she is back in the next couple of hours or I will need to have her towed. I'm pregnant and the nursery is far away. DH is telling me just to drive over the pavement to get out if she is till there but I don't see why I should have to?

You shouldn't have to. Get her towed

Tooooooohot · 29/07/2015 12:03

Just get her towed, sounds like she needs to be taught a lesson in consideration

holidaysareoverated · 29/07/2015 12:05

I was hoping the ticket would do that!

Anybody know how long it takes for the police to come and tow? I will give her a couple of hours to see if she comes back but then I am going to have to call.

Place marking.

I love a good parking thread.

Ring them now! Who the fuck parks over someone's drive? Even if there are some old markings there, surely the dropped kerb and car in the driveway would be enough. What a bellend.

I wonder if the ticket was for not parking in a bay or for parking over a dropped kerb.

ijustwannadance · 29/07/2015 12:16

While parking over someones drive is a shitty thing to do, she now has a parking ticket so won't be daft enough to do it again. However, the fact that you can actually get out of your drive (as pointed out by husband) means getting car towed just makes you spiteful. Pester council every day until road markings change.

Don't get her towed if you can drive over the kerb and get out. That could cost her hundreds and is a bit mean if it's not 100% clear what's going on with the road.

SoupDragon · 29/07/2015 12:17

What's not clear about a dropped kerb leading to a driveway with a car on it?

Pico2 · 29/07/2015 12:19

Is it really the police who do the towing? I'd have thought it would be the council.

If you can drive over the pavement then it seems excessive to get her towed.
