Left wing dialogue

As someone who has worked all over the world and is interested in politics I just wanted to see if I am only one who finds the language of the left tiring.

To give you an allusion of the type of language i mean below are two prime examples:
1. Taking the most extreme view and expressing it as if it is common.
2. Denying that people should show personal responsibility (this quite often goes hand in hand with point number 1).

I just find the language instantly de-rails any sort of constructive conversation regarding policy into a haves vs have-nots type argument which puts most people on the defensive. While people on the right are having sensible arguments with each other regarding society; in general people I talk to on the left seem to be in their own little world.

AIBU to think this sort of language is all to common from the left and it is what is isolating them?

I know this is a goady thread and I shoudn't bite, but...

What sort of 'extreme views' do the left present as if they are common? Can you give an example?

I would be thrilled to have a sensible argument with a right-wing poster.

I hate the smug, insouciant humour of the right. There's a quality to it of; you don't understand little girl. And, it minimises the actuality of the harm done.

Smoorikins Thu 09-Jul-15 15:10:43

I hear more extreme viewpoints from the right wingers than I do from the left.

You've derailed any possible conversation with your sweeping accusation, op. The left is no more isolated than the right, what a weird thing to say.

ThroughThickAndThin01 Thu 09-Jul-15 15:14:01

I think the left name call a lot. On MN anyway. Tory voters are always selfish, smug, fuckers, cunts, etc. Gets a bit wearing.

Oswin Thu 09-Jul-15 15:14:41

The thing is when the people are using the worst case scenarios on here its because they are living them.
Its hard not to comment when its your life being talked about.
I don't want to derail debate but when it impacts on my life I feel I need to join in with my perspective.

There is a thread going on at present where someone left wing has said the welfare state is being dismantled and others who are saying we will all be in workhouses and dying of poverty...

ElectraCute Thu 09-Jul-15 15:16:33

Whereas 'lazy, feckless, breeding scrounger' is just banter, right?

Gah. I have essays to mark. Why am I even giving this stuff the time of day?

Oswin Thu 09-Jul-15 15:17:01

I think if someone calls me scrounger I'm fully entitled to call em a cunt tbh.

itsmine Thu 09-Jul-15 15:17:59

Could just as easily say people from the right make sweeping statements about benefit scroungers.

Both sides can be guilty of this.

The more intelligent people realise that extremes are just that, extremes and not representative of any particular group of people.

You should know better than post on this particular site op.

DownstairsMixUp Thu 09-Jul-15 15:19:30

This has goady written all over it...

ElectraCute Thu 09-Jul-15 15:20:03

It's not the slightest bit extreme to say the welfare state is being dismantled.

As a small-state party, that is the Conservatives' stated raison d'etre. That's precisely the reason why many people voted for them.

DoJo Thu 09-Jul-15 15:20:29

OP - I think you're referring to confirmation bias. Of course you think that people who agree with you are making sensible arguments - surely that's the point.

Tbf NC you did go on about tightening belts and wotnot. Its tiring to be told that on a day your panicking about losing money. For lots of people there's nothing left to cut corners on or sell.
Its scary times for people and when people are so insensitive aa to suggest you just get on with it... Well I cant understand there anger.

ElectraCute Thu 09-Jul-15 15:27:33

Oh, do bore off NC. You namechanged specifically to post a load of goady, tedious crap yesterday. That's why you got short shrift.

LadyGlen Thu 09-Jul-15 15:28:18

I'm with MrsTerry on this. I would happily have a debate with right wing people with whom I disagree. But the relentless smuggery pisses me off, every time.

They have this air of always having all the answers and anyone who disagrees is dismissed as living in cloud cuckoo land or some such patronising tosh.

Icimoi Thu 09-Jul-15 15:29:04

Gawd, there's nothing like destroying your own argument by massive generalisation, is there, OP?

ElectraCute Thu 09-Jul-15 15:30:15

OP, still waiting for those examples of 'extreme views', if you'd be so kind, pleasethankyouplease.

MaggieJoyBlunt Thu 09-Jul-15 15:31:32

Oh OP you are a card grin
