AIBU?

to think the mantra "breakfast is the most important meal of the day" is just bollocks?

I am nbu, am I?

I get up at 7am most days (8 or 8.30 at the weekends) and never feel a pang of hunger before 10.30/11.

If I were to eat breakfast I would be forcing myself to eat when I'm not hungry.

Since I am quite overweight that would seem to me to be a very unwise thing to do.

One of the things about eating breakfast is that it kick starts the metabolism so you digest food more efficiently throughout the day.Smile

I agree OP.

I understand the theory about eating to kick off the metabolism . But for me eating just kicks off more eating Sad

Mintyy · 07/07/2015 22:11

Is that actually true Monkey? Or is it just one of things people say?

I totally agree.

JadeJaderson · 07/07/2015 22:13

I fast every day (16:8 eating plan) so have nothing except water until 1.30pm.

I lost over 2 stone on 16:8 which pissed all over the breakfast myth for me.

ShirleySmears · 07/07/2015 22:13

I don't know. I am a breakfast person and don't function well without it. DH won't eat anything until he's been up and busy or a good couple of hours.

What I will say is that almost everyone I know who has been a stable "normal" weight all their life does eat a proper breakfast.

Asleeponasunbeam · 07/07/2015 22:13

I agree it's rubbish. I'm slim. DH is now slim since he started not having breakfast.

DoJo · 07/07/2015 22:13

One of the things about eating breakfast is that it kick starts the metabolism so you digest food more efficiently throughout the day.

But surely that happens whenever you eat your first meal of the day doesn't it? Does it matter if that is as soon as you wake up or a few hours later?

KatieScarlettreregged · 07/07/2015 22:13

I have never eaten breakfast except on holidays. And only then as I am usually accompanying DH and I want coffee.
Generally speaking I have to be awake for at least 4 hrs before my stomach wants food.
Can't say it's done me any harm.

Asleeponasunbeam · 07/07/2015 22:14

Oh, we feel fine by the way. After coffee anyway. Not hungry till lunchtime.

MsVestibule · 07/07/2015 22:14

monkey that's what I've always understood too, but apparently some nutritionists aren't as convinced as they used to be. Apparently fat burning starts after fasting for 15 hours, so assuming you eat your final meal at 7pm, it makes sense to not eat until after 10am the next day (if you're trying to lose weight, of course!).

I'm doing the 5:2 diet and tend to not eat until midday on fast days - I can fairly easily manage only 500 calories per day, and yet on a non-fast day, I have a bowl of porridge with fruit at 8am and I'm starving by midday.

barleyfieldsummer · 07/07/2015 22:15

It's because the theory is that if you don't eat breakfast you will snack.

I don't; I'm more likely to snack if I eat breakfast.

StonedGalah · 07/07/2015 22:16

Monkey is right. If you want to lose weight you need to quicken your metabolism. Eating (the right sort of food) and having muscle mass is the best way.

I have a small breakfast once I'm up, then graze until dinner and then generally don't eat.

bialystockandbloom · 07/07/2015 22:17

I agree. Maybe it only works if you follow the "breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, supper like a pauper" mantra. Whereas in the real world, I for one certainly would eat like a king for every meal if I could.

WorraLiberty · 07/07/2015 22:17

I agree

I haven't eaten breakfast since my last year at Junior school

I get up about 7.30am and I'm never hungry before about 11.30am, so I wouldn't force myself to eat for the sake of it.

Mintyy · 07/07/2015 22:18

I don't snack. I eat two meals per day - lunch and dinner. Sometimes more like brunch and dinner.

daisywellies · 07/07/2015 22:21

If I don't eat a breakfast I'm on the backfoot all day. A decent breakfast eg porridge or scrambled eggs hugely decreases the amount of crap I eat over the rest of the day.

Stealthpolarbear · 07/07/2015 22:25

Agree op. I usually do eat breakfast but it is just food. Not convinced it's the most important. I also would like to see evidence for kick starting your metabolism as I think it's a myth (along with bloody starvation mode) that has been repeated so often it's gained its own credibility through repetition
P's if you look half as good as you did when I saw you you look fantastic :o

Stealthpolarbear · 07/07/2015 22:26

Dd is 6 and appears to be joining the ranks of the non breakfasters. I still encourage her to have it. How old do you have to be do you think before you can decide you aren't having it and that's that?

Fatmomma99 · 07/07/2015 22:27

I have a glass of fruit juice too hungover usually to be able to face anything else

But I am overweight........

OllyBJolly · 07/07/2015 22:27

Me too, daisy. Eat breakfast, then nothing until lunch. Just don't feel hungry and no snacking all day. Weight steady at 9st.

Stealth, 1 out of my 3 just couldn't stomach breakfast by the age of about 7

The compromise was that he ate a banana on the way to school

He's 16 now and about to start 6th form in September, and still loves his banana on the walk there Grin

KatieScarlettreregged · 07/07/2015 22:29

I gave up when they started High School. Got tired of all that wasted food and the effort of encouraging them to eat.
And as I didn't eat it either, did not really have a leg to stand on.

ChopinLiszt · 07/07/2015 22:29

No.....breakfast (within an hour of waking) gets your metabolism going for the day. Why would you expect your body to function on zero energy for a day??
