AIBU?

to be gutted about my necklace

DH bought me a Tiffany necklace for a significant birthday on Sunday. I wore it that day and put it on this morning- just looked and it's tarnished!! I've waited a long time for something out of a Tiffany box and I'm pissed off that it looks crap already.

Could you take it back and get Tiffany to fix it?

I hope so. We're in the north of Scotland and he got it in Heathrow. Hoping we can just post it but still pretty annoyed.

I have a Tiffany bracelet which does this everytime I get/spray perfume on it,

contacted them and apparently there's a reaction between the coating and the perfume now I barely wear it for fear of damaging it further. Silver dip stuff has brought it up loads.

I don't wear perfume- could it be sweat in this heat? Just seems shit to me after one and a half wears!!

thats really crap - if you are spending that much on a branded item thats suposed to be quality it shouldnt tarnish

is it silver? My skin makes silver turn black. No idea why?

If it's solid silver you can polish off the tarnish, surely!

Report
polkadotsrock · 01/07/2015 13:31

Probably, but should that really be necessary every single time I wear it?

Silver turns black if you don't wear it constantly. Get a silver polishing cloth and give it a good clean. You can buy special pouches to store silver jewellery in when you aren't wearing it to stop it doing this.

I just thought it was a thing with all silver jewellery...

Bit far away to nip back isn't it Sad Hope it cleans up for you and what a lovely gift Smile

Put it in a bowl with a piece of tinfoil in the bottom, pour in hot boiled water
The oxidisation will be reversed..no polishing required

Are you near a Lakeland? They have a silver polishing cloth.

You can get a polishing cloth from Amazon for a couple of quid or any jewellers.

A second vote for a polishing cloth off amazon. They also sell little paper strips that you put in the box with your necklace which help to reduce tarnishing.

Silver always tarnishes - doesn't matter how expensive or exclusive the gift is, if it is silver it will tarnish. - that is how you know it is silver.

I saw a documentary once on the royal family - they have a team whose job is to polish the silver - all the time - by the time they get to the last piece they start again

Rub it with toothpaste then rinse off under a tap, it will come out like new...

A quick buff up with silver cleaner will sort it.

SomewhereIBelong is absolutely correct - it's just what silver does!

but thats silver thats not worn - silver that is worn should be fine

Report
DragonWithAGirlTattoo · 01/07/2015 16:24

it should not have tarnished within 3 days

Sounds like it just wasn't cleaned before being sold.

I did that tinfoil thing with some silver and ruined it. Some was ok some wasn't.
