To be panicking about spiders on bananas?

2 or 3 weeks ago I bought some bananas from Morrisons and noticed a big white patch on the back of one of them. I assumed it was mould or something so I binned the banana. I've just read about a woman who found a spiders nest on some bananas and realised it was identical and probably a spiders nest too, especially after googling what a spiders nest looks like.

I'm now panicking wondering whether any spider eggs have hatched in my kitchen and could be deadly. Am I being irrational??

You would have noticed if the spiders had come out of the nest as there would be hundreds of them crawling around, you've binned it and your safe now Grin

I watched a video where a spider actually came out of a banana, I don't believe everything I watch online but this did look very real and it made my skin crawl a bit.

I still eat 2 bananas a day though Wink

Not irrational in the slightest. The only safe bet is to burn your kitchen down.

Should add- rationality about spiders ain't my strong point.

I used to work as a manager for a food retail company and its extremely unlikely that you will get a poisonous spider on your banana, honestly.
They are distributed in very cold conditions too, so hopefully that would kill them

This is why I only buy loose bananas and check very carefully. When I was a student I worked in banana processing and saw some horrors!

I'm sure you'll be fine if you binned it.

Burning the kitchen down sounds tempting. Oh god it was huge now I come to think of it, no idea why I thought it was mould. The picture I've just seen of a Brazilian wandering spider has made me freak out a little! I'll try and calm down Grin

Although none of mine could actually kill you. I have one who's classed as dangerous, but I never see him. He's actually very shy and retiring.

But, but what it they hatched outside....Arrggghhhhh

I bloody hate spiders

The best thing is to not buy bananas at all, they are the fruit of the devil and should burn in hell .

Bananas are lovely and tasty and if they come with free pets added extras why that's just great Grin

I live in Brazil and we grow bananas. We currently have 7 bunches hanging in the banana shed and a further 3 in the kitchen fruit bowl. I have never ever seen a spider on a banana. If I did, I would either put it outside or squash it. Spiders are not a problem. We have far worse fears from Snakes and Scorpians, you won't find those on bananas either Wink

Ooo, I have snakes and scorpions too......not dangerous ones though.

I ordered a job lot of deadly spiders and when they arrived, they had a bloody banana in with them. I'm petrified of bananas, horrible long yellowy things, so it completely ruined it for me. I had to throw the lot out!

tomato do you ever see any deadly spiders? I used to live in Australia so should be able to handle things like this a bit better but I'm still a big wuss. Oh and I see more spiders in the UK than I ever did in Aus, I think I'll move back!

hiddenhome to be honest, even the deadly snakes are no match for my cat. She's 100% psyco and still only 8 months. She's taken on a large Jaracara and won. You'd need to run out of the house if you found her on your bananas!

It is possible for a dangerous spider to get in a shipment of bananas and end up on a supermarket shelf. It has happened - but it's very, very rare. If you haven't got loads of mini spiders around by now I think you are fine. Because I know a bit about this (work research) I do pick up my bananas carefully and check! It's maybe a bit silly but saves you worrying at home.

Only deadly one I know of blue is the wandering spider, we had one on a web for a while, but it's wandered off (pun intended). We have several enormous trantulas, one giant was in the pool with the kids recently, but they are pretty harmless, certainly not deadly. Most of the spiders in our house are like the ones you see in the UK, small and as bad as a wasp.

I have the spider banana fear too! I read an article years ago and since then I always check the bananas. Never found anything though.

I have this fear! I refuse to buy bagged bananas and I always shake them when I pick them up in the shop.

I worked in a shoe shop when I was 16. We opened a crate of ( cheap and very nasty ) sandals one day and found a big, velvety brown beetle inside! It had died sadly. It was massive though and looked so soft.Sad
