AIBU?

To think I could have a blood clot?!

A week last Friday I went to office party, I remember everything and wasn't THAT drunk. I stayed at my dads and woke up in a lot of pain in my neck. I put it down to sleeping awkwardly. Here we are 10 days later and the pain is extreme. Naproxen and Paracetamol not working, pain has gone into my shoulder, and now in arm.

Doctor suggested I pulled my neck (I am having physio at present, after which made the pain worse).

Should I go to A&E?

Serious question - do you suffer from health anxiety? I do, and this is the kind of conclusion I jump to when i've got pains etc.

I would never personally think that was a blood clot. I can't think of any indication that it might be a blood clot? It sounds like a trapped nerve or a crick in your neck. I'm no doctor but I would never go to A&E with what you describe.

It sounds like something that happened to me where I woke up in extreme pain and couldn't move my arm/shoulder well. Walk in centre told me it was a pulled/torn muscle and could take 3-6 months to heal with physio. It actually got better in 2-3 weeks but I used a lot of painkillers in that time, and saw a great physio which helped.

I've also had blood clots, and this doesn't sound like one to me. Do you have a clotting disorder? Otherwise I'm not sure why you'd think it was a clot. I would go to your GP or walk in centre and say you need stronger painkillers and a referral to a better physio. I did have to rest mine before I could start physio - that may be behind your extreme pain now.

I think i'm getting paranoid because the pain is travelling. I have taken Codiene now and it's still not releiving the pain. Meh :(

maybe try visiting a chiropractor? I don't think it sounds like a blood clot - more like tense muscles or a trapped nerve.

I had a pain like this which started in my neck and I was told after an x Ray that I had some wear and tear in a vertebra in my neck. The pain was really bad and lasted weeks. I also felt pain in my arm and up the back of my head. I think it was the nerves affected by the vertebra. It is unlikely to be a clot.

I was given some sort of mild anti depressant,..can't remember the name,..but it gets prescribed for nerve pain

I have bulging discs in my neck and upper thoracic spine. It causes pain in my shoulders, arms, fingers and face. If one of the nerve roots near your spine is inflamed or something is pressing on it, it is quite common for pain to travel. My consultant recommended physio as the first option.

I take amitryptiline for nerve pain that is an old anti-depressant.

Chaz Yes, thanks, that's the one they gave me. It took a bit of time to be effective but other painkillers did nothing.

I take Citalopram for my health anxiety.

So far I have taken paracetamol, Naproxen and Solpadiene. None of this has worked and am feeling very fed up and sorry for myself :(

If it's nerve pain, you need a different pain killer.

Conventional painkillers often don't do a lot for nerve related pain. You would have to speak to your GP again to see if they can suggest something else. I don't know if you could take Amitryptiline with Citalopram but there are also anti-epilesy drugs that can be used.

You could try an ice pack - wrap it in a towel first, and rest on a comfortable, soft surface. Continue with the naproxen as it is an anti-inflammatory. A bag of frozen peas is good.

Really - this is the best treatment to do asap after the pain starts. I am not sure how well it would work so long after the injury. The physio has probably made things worse as I think you have maybe had it a bit too soon.

A small dose of valium may be helpful to reduce the muscle spasm - this happens as a response to the nerve pain. Your GP would have to prescribe it though.

Sorry - you have to be so careful about mixing medications with antidepressants - you might not be able to have valium - I missed the post about citalopram.

Thanks everyone. I rang my doctor who could not give me an appointment, so rang the local minor injury clinic and they said they would ring my doctor to give me an appointment today. Sounds like it will just be a telephone appointment but that's better than nothing. The pain is unbearable

Sounds like torte collis.

Yes, you can have diazepam with citalopram.

Takes a couple if weeks to get properly better though, unfortunately

What makes you thin that creampie? Isn't that when the head sticks in one position?

Don't go to A & E! You've got health anxiety which is not an accident or an emergency

Re your neck pain.. You've just pulled something or slept a bit funny. You haven't got a blood clot. Scale down the ridiculous amount of painkillers and have a hot bath or use ice packs

People shouldn't go into too much medical detail with a HA sufferer because it makes them worse and convinces them to turn up at A & E
