AIBU?

To think if I post here, someone will recognise me

Intensely irritating situation today, involving family suggesting we spend large sums of money on a joint enterprise, that we can't afford due to some very unfortunate personal circumstances (we appear well off, have good incomes, but are expecting significant expenses/drop in income over the next few months due to health issues), and then getting pissed off when we said no and explained why (the bleeding obvious). I don't feel I can share the full story as they know I am on MN and would definitely recognise the story and circumstances, and I don't want the fall out.....has anyone else been caught out? What happened?

Say no and stick to your guns. Personal finances come first.

Caught out as in outed on MN? I haven't, but fucking loads plenty of others have. There have been a few threads about it recently, but they may have disappeared now. Some of the fallouts were horrific.

Can you change enough details to make it less identifying but still give an accurate story?

Yes, outed....I don't think I can change it enough, and it still be the same story iyswim?

It sort of wouldn't make any difference anyway, even if you told be iwbu, we still can't afford it Grin

No one has a right to tell you how to spend your own money or to get pissy when you decline for whatever reason.

Stand your ground and continue to say no. Even if you were rolling in £50 notes, it's for you to say what you do with them!
