To give my dinner guests a take away?

Oh God. I had a beautiful meal planned for my neighbours tonight; slow cooked beef rump in a lovely sauce.

Forgot to turn the shitting slow cooker on before I left the house this morning Sad I fully burst into tears in front of a bemused DH. I am actually stupid. I was so looking forward to it.

It's half an hour before they get here (only just in from work) so there is no time to make something else. I'm going to be the subject of one of those awful dinner party threads, I just know it.

There's no other food in, not shopping day until tomorrow.

It's beans on toast or takeaway. DH is brightly brandishing Indian takeaway menus and saying we'll just pay for a big Indian.

Is this ok? I feel so sorry for my neighbours, they've organised one of their mums to babysit and looking forward to this!

I would love this! Just tell them what happened, they'll pity you.

AuntyMag10 · 29/05/2015 19:53

I would rather a Indian takeaway than slow cooked beefSmile I'm sure your guests will enjoy.

KingJoffreyLikesJaffaCakes · 29/05/2015 19:54

It's fine.

They've come to see you, not the food.

Smile

I once forgot dessert and gave my guests an Easter Egg each.

meerschweinchen · 29/05/2015 19:54

Oh poor you! Honestly, don't feel bad though. If I were one of your guests I'd love an Indian takeaway.

Pour yourself a big glass of wine and enjoy. It's one of those things you'll laugh about one day.

NinkyNonkers · 29/05/2015 19:54

I agree! It'ok be fine. Crack open a bottle and get ordering. You'll have fun. I've done that with the slow cooker, mega annoying.

formerbabe · 29/05/2015 19:54

Sounds fine to me! Who wouldn't love an evening with an Indian takeaway?! Yum!

Grumpyoldbiddy · 29/05/2015 19:55

Id bloody love this! Takeaway, beer, friends and laughing over a shit day!!!

PenguinBollards · 29/05/2015 19:56

Unless you can do an impressive-looking 'beans a la toast ' I think you'll have to get a takeaway.

They're friends, they'll find it funny - I know I would.

TiltedPenguin · 29/05/2015 19:56

One of the best dinner parties I've been to was Chinese takeaway as host had burnt everything (faulty oven). We had great fun remembering all our culinary disasters and childhood worst meals. Tell them and laugh!

Moln · 29/05/2015 19:56

Tell them what happened. I'm sure unless they are unreasonable they'll understand.

If it's a decent Indian place (and they like Indian food!) I'm sure they'll be fine - it's more than likey the company they are looking forward to.

defineme · 29/05/2015 19:56

Of course it's ok. I would love a take away indian...get a set meal for 4...there'll be loads of food, dig in.
honestly, it's fine! You could always say the slow cooker broke?

gointothewoods · 29/05/2015 19:56

Often do that with friends who are time short. We go to one house and order takeaway and share the lot. Good fun. Why not!

FadedRed · 29/05/2015 19:56

As long as they like Indian food, no problem. it's the enjoyment of an evening in good company that's important, so just chill and enjoy. Tell them what happened and have a laugh about how you'll be eating it for every meal over the weekend. So get out the menu and the phone and pour a glass of wine Smile Wine

vulgarwretch · 29/05/2015 19:57

Don't worry. It will be fine. Please explain what happened so they don't think you planned to have a takeaway, but they are there to see you. It's okay, these things happen. Just try to relax now so you are fun to be around tonight.

Stitchintime1 · 29/05/2015 19:57

I love going to dinner and finding it's a takeaway. Let them choose though. Can I come?

Fatmomma99 · 29/05/2015 19:57

Sounds great. Got room for 1 more (I'll only make slow cooker jokes once or twice an hour)?

Sorry it's made you feel rubbish, though.

Can you have it for dinner tomorrow?

SinglePringle · 29/05/2015 19:57

I'd laugh uproariously! At the situation, not you! I'd then walk into your kitchen, pour you an enormous tumbler of the champers I usually take to a friends for dinner whilst asking you to order extra poppadoms.

MrsWooster · 29/05/2015 19:58

It's fine- how would you feel in reverse situation..? Open a LOT of wine and laugh yourselves silly about it ( plus you get to eat all the lovely beef tomorrow.. and the next day... and)

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 29/05/2015 19:58

Oh poor you OP. I really feel for you. But it is true that once they're here, happily ordering a lovely meal and drinking lots of delicious wine, you'll have a fabulous evening.

In fact, you must report back tomorrow and tell us what a nice time you all have!

RyanAirVeteran · 29/05/2015 19:58

Dismalfuckers · 29/05/2015 19:58

YANBU, it's just one of these things, just relax, order in, and have a nice chilled time.

bythewindsailors · 29/05/2015 19:59

Personally, if I go to a friends house for dinner, I go to see my friends not for the food. I wouldn't care if we had jam sandwiches to be honest. If I want posh food, I would go to a restaurant.
As long as you don't make them pay for the takeaway, it's fine!
Must be really annoying though, slow cooked beef sounds lovely.

WonderingWillow · 29/05/2015 20:01

Oh god yes we are paying!! Would never expect them to pay I'm embarrassed enough!!
