I was preparing tomorrow's dinner and as i was cooking the meat, it got me thinking about animal testing.
grim in so many ways, i know.
i think its really time for me to seek out cosmetic products that are not tested on animals.
going vegetarian is another day's work but i'm keen to know any cruelty free brand names that MN folk can recommend.

Well if youre concerned about animal testing I'd be more concerned about the torture factory farmed animals suffer day in day out. Not just for meat but dairy and eggs too.
Superdrug does a lot of cruelty free cosmetics and toiletries.

Oh and whilst a lot of companies may label their products as cruelty free or not tested on animals, they probably sell in China too. All cosmetics sold in China must by law be tested on animals. So if they sell in China, they are not cruelty free

Co-op own brand shampoo is labelled as not tested on animals (coconut one smells nice), price and performance at the basic end. Interested about the EU legisation aspect though.

RE meat, one of the reasons for buying organic where possible is because the organic standards include animal welfare standards that are higher than the legal minimum (which is all the Red Tractor offers, basically). I know it cost more but we should all be eating less anyway for the good of the planet (and our bowels as well quite possibly), so its a good move to make I think.

I think intensive pig rearing is cruellest because pigs are so intelligent, but it all sucks.

Don't forget household stuff, the big brands still test on animals, the supermarket own brand stuff is a better bet.

Superdrug own brand is all cruelty free, as are tesco toiletries. MUA make-up is cruelty free and actually surprisingly good (I've been stocking up lately) and I recently got a moisturiser from a brand called 'YesTo' which are cruelty free. Simple skincare is also cruelty free. Also Organic virgin coconut oil is a really good beauty product to have around and I don't think you would get any cruelty with it?
I'm young and poor but always try to buy cruelty free, I sometimes buy the odd 'bad' thing, for example, I have garnier micellar water at the moment, but next time I'll get a different brand.

Avoid anything that is made by l'oreal. Anything. Including the body shop. L'oreal test on animals. Procter and Gamble should also be avoided. Aldi don't test on animals for toiletries or household goods.

Why not move to organic as well and look at green people, skin blossom etc?

Yy to whoever also mentioned the welfare aspect of organic meat. Main reason I buy it, and the price is a great way of limiting ones meat consumption!!!

Cruelty Free International have a list of all companies that don't test on animals. If a product has the leaping bunny logo (careful as some companies try and copy this logo) then it is cruelty free.

As far as the selling in China goes,the company has to agree that the government may test their products as they wish (including on animals). The company doesn't do it & for the most part I don't think there is much testing actually done.
Not ideal but China is such an enormous market many beauty companies will agree. I know that certain companies are actively sharing their knowledge with China as to why the practice is not deemed ethical or in fact necessary.

Superdrug also stock Barry M makeup, which I like. I used to only buy BWC as a chemist where I grew up stocked it, but now I don't live there it's great to see Barry M in a mainstream store. Original Source shower gels are nice too. I think Palmers cocoa butter stuff is also fine.
