AIBU?

To wonder when does old shit become vintage?

Just that really - the local charity shop has a "vintage event" which as far as i can see, means upping the price on anything that my aged mother would wear and calling it "vintage". The same goes for "retro". My DD lives in Margate (for her many sins) and its retro this and vintage that, even Dreamland is being called a "vintage" theme park, well ok, there's the scenic railway but as far as i can see from peeking through a whole in the fence the rest of the stuff looks pretty modern high tech stuff of travelling fairs (not traditional at all!) - i remember Dreamland how it used to be and it is NOTHING like that! But they will call it "vintage/retro" and justify the millions of £££s spent.

I must be getting really curmudgeonly in my old age but it proper boils my piss.

Now don't get me wrong, i like old stuff but i don't want to pay through the nose for it because someone has called it vintage - oh and a bit of bunting does not vintage make!

When does old stuff become vintage?
When it's for sale!

When it becomes in vogue again.

When you can find someone stupid enough to pay £££££ for it.

I agree. I'm old enough to remember when vintage just meant wine; everything else was second hand.

Once something preloved has been worn a few more times and the sweat-stains are now indistinguishable from the faded fabric.

When some pretentious lifestyle magazine declares it so. Even more so if said item has been sourced or invested in rather than bought.

There's a charity shop on our main road, and a 'vintage' shop a few doors down. The prices seem to be the main difference.

YANBU.

Round here I sometimes wonder if I've discovered time travel, so prolific is the old shyte disguised as 'vintage'. Certainly, it is mostly crappy old nonsense that's aimed at people with far more money than sense.

I hear you. It's the same with the whole 'bespoke' bullshit.
If you didn't commission an item from design to construction, it ain't effing 'bespoke'!!

Oooh glad it's not just me that ponders this. There is a Vintage shop round the corner from where I work, fancy shop sign, nice plants outside. About 30 metres from a community charity shop. Both smell just the same.

I used to scour the charity shops in my 20s and you could really find some amazing stuff. beautiful shoes, fur coats (not my thing), ball gowns, jewellery, sometimes proper couture or beautifully hand made clothes.
Stuff that must have REALLY been in granny's attic.

Now everything thats worth anything is picked off before it even reaches the charity shops and sold as 'vintage' in auctions and by specialist buyers.

I know its great that the charities are making more £ for good causes but it takes the fun out of the whole thing Sad Angry

Don't forget upcycling (tr: sanding and repainting second hand stuff).
