There have been several press articles about it. It's pretty accurate. It's construction industry in a developing country. H&S standards are almost non existent. Lots of people in this country die in the industry still

Working conditions are no worse in Qatar than in most countries outside the OECD. Its a worldwide issue. Most of the goods we buy have either been made in or have raw materials sourced from Developing countries with very poor health and safety records.

The gravel on my drive came from a quarry in India. Pretty much all our clothes, much of our food and many household goods even our children's toys are made in factories which would not meet EU health and safety standards.... yet we all like a bargain!

Katiemana you are correct - the 2012 Olympic build was unique in that no workers were killed in the construction of the park and facilities. The pp post who pointed out that very many of our goods are made in hell holes in developing countries is also correct. It's cheaper to make abroad due to low wages and appalling worker conditions ....

Yes I think in a ideal world the organisation should be setting standards around the things that go along with hosting one of these types of events. Just because shit happens doesn't mean that an organisation which could impose higher standards shouldn't bother.

OP that is a shocking stat and I hadn't heard it before and absolutely an event with such a lot of money behind it and with the world watching / participating and the huge prestige and income from hosting it, the body who choose where it goes should be saying these are the terms under which you get this special thing.

But yes they're all corrupt so same old it's all fucked really.

MoreBeta - I won't argue with your point about incredibly dangerous working conditions around the world. But the conditions in Qatar are exacerbated by the legal system, especially the so-called kafala, which ties work permits for migrant workers to a single employer. This is not just a case of labour laws failing to protect workers, it's government collusion in the exploitation of migrant workers.
