Ab out the price of cherries

He says "May I have some cherries"

I say yes and pick a punnet up and then clock the price. £7!!! for a small punnet of normal cherries!

Is there a shortage? Have I missed something or AIBU and this is normal and cherries are now only eaten by city bankers and Russian oligarchs?

Just to add, I did not buy the cherries and DS had to make do with some blueberries which happily cost a sane amount

Yes, YANBU, the price is ludicrous. They're now so expensive I only get them from M&S as they're actually nice from there. If I'm going to pay that much, I'm going to have good cherries!

It was in Booths, which isn't cheap but still, SEVEN POUNDS.

I'm in shock. It was for the punnet, not a kg.

I;ve just checked and they are £12.50 a kg in Tesco, so whilst Booths have added a premium they seem to be stuip prices everywhere.

It's very early in the season so I suspect they are imported.
Even if the price improves as they come into season in the UK, they're still expensive compared to other fruit.

I think it's because they got rid of many cherry orchards some years ago. I'm also staggered at the price especially when they are English and haven't been flown halfway around the world.

They're about £2 a pound in the market when they're in season. I never buy cherries from supermarkets.

£5 difference between tesco and asda, that seems loads.

Combination of factors. They need good weather to grow, there are less orchards than they used to be so price is driven up plus currently not in season so imported. Your best bet is to find a pick your own - much cheaper or a roadside stall. Think I paid £4 a kilo this way last summer

My ExDH runs one of the companies that supplies M&S with their "biggest, sweetest, juiciest" cherries. Now I hate cherries but my DD loves them. You would think he might send a few packs her way but no... Dammed if I'm going to pay £7 for them!

They seem to cost more than gold which sucks as I love them. I can get a pretty big bag in Tesco for £7 ish. Then I hide them from the children who could hoover the lot up in seconds. Its not often I buy something that costs more than wine, because I think, well I could get some wine for the same amount
