In the supermarket with DS (3)

He says "May I have some cherries"

I say yes and pick a punnet up and then clock the price. £7!!! for a small punnet of normal cherries!

Is there a shortage? Have I missed something or AIBU and this is normal and cherries are now only eaten by city bankers and Russian oligarchs?

catgirl1976 Sun 17-May-15 13:38:35

Just to add, I did not buy the cherries and DS had to make do with some blueberries which happily cost a sane amount

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe Sun 17-May-15 13:39:42

Yes, YANBU, the price is ludicrous. They're now so expensive I only get them from M&S as they're actually nice from there. If I'm going to pay that much, I'm going to have good cherries! shock

WorraLiberty Sun 17-May-15 13:39:53

7 fucking pounds???? shock

Jeez and I moan at the price of strawberries.

KindergartenKop Sun 17-May-15 13:41:19

Is it the wrong season?

catgirl1976 Sun 17-May-15 13:41:20

I nearly fainted. They were just ordinary cherries. I'm in the wrong business. I'm going to get a cherry orchard.

tabulahrasa Sun 17-May-15 13:41:23

They're about £7 a kg in supermarkets...was it that you read?

Either that or you shop in very different shops to me, lol

ginmakesitallok Sun 17-May-15 13:43:13

Where were you shopping, and how big was the bag of cherries??!

AlternativeTentacles Sun 17-May-15 13:44:04

Not in season yet. Which part of the world were they shipped in from OP?

catgirl1976 Sun 17-May-15 13:44:16

It was in Booths, which isn't cheap but still, SEVEN POUNDS.

I'm in shock. It was for the punnet, not a kg.

I;ve just checked and they are £12.50 a kg in Tesco, so whilst Booths have added a premium they seem to be stuip prices everywhere.

gallicgirl Sun 17-May-15 13:44:25

It's very early in the season so I suspect they are imported.
Even if the price improves as they come into season in the UK, they're still expensive compared to other fruit.

catgirl1976 Sun 17-May-15 13:46:18

*stupid

I can't type I'm so cross about cherry pricing smile

Allinson2014 Sun 17-May-15 13:47:20

Yippee I'm finally going to be rich, there's three cherry trees in our garden!

eddiemairswife Sun 17-May-15 13:47:35

I think it's because they got rid of many cherry orchards some years ago. I'm also staggered at the price especially when they are English and haven't been flown halfway around the world.

catgirl1976 Sun 17-May-15 13:48:30

You can retire now Allinson smile

Amethyst24 Sun 17-May-15 13:48:36

They're about £2 a pound in the market when they're in season. I never buy cherries from supermarkets.

TheBookofRuth Sun 17-May-15 13:48:41

It can't just be the season; they were ludicrously expensive last year too.

tabulahrasa Sun 17-May-15 13:49:04

They're £7.50 a kg in Asda... So I wasn't far out.

£5 difference between tesco and asda, that seems loads.

londonrach Sun 17-May-15 13:49:57

Sound of a door slamping with a cheery cry 'off to buy a cherry tree now back soon mntters'

LovingKent Sun 17-May-15 13:53:15

Combination of factors. They need good weather to grow, there are less orchards than they used to be so price is driven up plus currently not in season so imported. Your best bet is to find a pick your own - much cheaper or a roadside stall. Think I paid £4 a kilo this way last summer

RJnomore Sun 17-May-15 13:57:21

£4.80 a kilo at our kcal fruit stall yesterday. Which now seems an absolute bargain.

Pasithea Sun 17-May-15 13:57:32

Coveting my cherry tree so the bastard birds don't get them

Feelingworriednow Sun 17-May-15 13:59:05

My ExDH runs one of the companies that supplies M&S with their "biggest, sweetest, juiciest" cherries. Now I hate cherries but my DD loves them. You would think he might send a few packs her way but no... Dammed if I'm going to pay £7 for them!

chairmeoh Sun 17-May-15 13:59:59

The ones from my greengrocer are much cheaper than the supermarkets and taste far better.

TattyDevine Sun 17-May-15 14:02:45

They seem to cost more than gold which sucks as I love them. I can get a pretty big bag in Tesco for £7 ish. Then I hide them from the children who could hoover the lot up in seconds. Its not often I buy something that costs more than wine, because I think, well I could get some wine for the same amount grin

Though I'm off wine at the mo before I get too fat sad
