AIBU?

AIBU to think that charging a child rent whilst they're still at home and in the last year of A-levels is wrong?

Happy to be corrected but I personally feel this is a bit off. Thanks.

My dad charged me rent when I moved in with him whilst I was doing my degree. I received £236 a month for my NHS bursary and I had to hand over £150 to him Hmm

My mother went ballistic when she found out Grin

Usually no, where would an older teen in full time ed get all that money? If they had a part time job it would partialy cover going out, saving for holidays or car, or uni or longer term, public transport, lunches, phone, particularly desired clothes, music.

Is there a back story?

Or the family are in a very bad financial situation, teen has a reasinable income, but doesnt lift a finger and pays for nothing.

Unless the young person in question has a substantial private income then I don't see how you could. 'Paying' rent by helping with household jobs etc is fine though.

Yanbu

My mother did this to me. I couldnt go on the higher course in college as it was a further 2 years and my mother wanted £25 a week rent. I didnt have the money so couldnt do the course. I had to get a job instead

It is compulsory to remain in education until end of Y13 now. Where the fuck do the parents think the money is supposed to come from, given that the child still has to be in school full time?

How much rent? If the person is 18, has a job and is being asked for £30 a week, that's not so bad.

Very wrong, the parent will still be getting cb for that child for a start.
No difference from an 18 year old in year 13, to a 16 year old in year 11, or a 14 year old in year 9

It still rankles DH that he was made to give up his a levels and his dreams of becoming a pe teacher half-way through to join the family business not the Mafia Wink

I would say it's wrong but the popular opinion on Mumsnet seems to be that you should fleece your kids for every penny you can get so they learn to stand on their own feet or something.

I think rent should only begin to be taken from kids once they are in full time work or earning a significant amount in a PT job around college/uni.

Or, if the family are struggling financially then all earning kids should contribute.

When I was in school 16+ we got EMA money, £30 a week, primarily so that parents who were struggling felt less inclined to push young adults out of education and into the work place so they could pay digs.

I never had to hand mines over to my mum, but a few friends did. I had to use mines for bus fares, lunch money etc.

I think they scrapped it though?

They're taking 25 quid per week which she earns from a call centre job.

Isn't it penalising young people for actually having the initiative to get a job whilst studying?

How much does she earn from her job per week?

thehumanjam MN would have a field day with me. Neither me or my sister paid rent when we lived at home even when we worked full time. It wasn't because we didn't want to or because we expected everything in life to be free. My parents just refused to take any money from us and no matter how much we insisted, they still refused.

We both moved out at the age of 20 though and have stayed away Wink.
