AIBU?

give it to me - am I selfish to sell my grandmothers prized collection to raise money for a deposit

Nc. I inherited my grandmothers priced collection of plates. She loved them but since I have them they have just sat INA box and got in the way. Can't display any of them even if I wanted to as live in a cramped flat. I know she wanted me to look after them but they are fragile and could easily break as I've had to move regularly with dodgy landlords. Some of them are quite valuable.

Aibu to sell most of them to raise money for a deposit? I've fallen in love with a house that I might be able to afford if I sell them. I know it would of broken her heart but it just seems silly to have them sat in the airing cupboard doing nothing for me. I don't particularly like most of them, but would like too keep two of them ,(collection is 59,).

Give it to me honestly

Thank you

I say that yanbu - I'm sure that your grandmother would be happy for you to benefit from them (although I don't know that plates would be worth much??)

It's a great idea.Smile

If you don't have them insured individually they are just a headache to you.

Sell them. Let someone who will love themIhave them and you enjoy your new home. Toast granny and her plates when you move in. You are not letting granny down by selling the plates.

Yes, I'd sell them. Keep the two you like.

They'll go to people who'll display/cherish them which sounds more like something your GM would want.

It does seem like a waste.

I thinking selling them & keeping a couple is fine.

I'm sure she'd rather you had a house than a load of boxes in an airing cupboard.

Would they really raise enough for a deposit?

YANBU, if selling them would make your life substantially more comfortable. I would choose a handful of the plates which I liked the most and keep them as a reminder though.

Flog 'em!

I say YANBU at all.

They could well break one day and end up worth nothing.

Also (and I mean this nicely) not everyone wants to display old fashioned things, even if they do have the room.

No you're not. You loved her, you don't have to love her plates.. Think of it as you will be passing the plates onto someone else who will love them rather than then being in a box forever.

Assuming that you've had an expert valuation (for insurance) and the market hasn't changed too much since, I would sell. I wouldn't sell on the back of a half-hearted ebay search as you could be left with no plates and no house. If they really are that valuable then go for it - I don't think that your airing cupboard will mourn the loss .

YANBU - your gran enjoyed them when she was alive and she gave them to you.

using the proceeds of their sale to fund a place for her is not selfish - expecting you to look after and take care of something you aren't that keen on is also selfish in a way.

perhaps you could take photos or put up some memento of her in your new house??

It does seem silly for them to just be sat in a box and for you to be constantly stressing about them bring damaged, when you could benefit in a really practical way by selling them on. And the sale would likely be to someone who has the same interest in them as your grandmother did, so you know they would be looked after. I would go for it, and like you say, keep 1-2 in her memory.

Can you keep one and sell the rest if there's one you like? yanbu for wanting to sell the plates but if they meant a lot to your gran perhaps keeping one to ease your conscience and honour her memory would be a compromise?

when she left them to you did she expressly tell you not to sell them? if not then yanbu. if she did then its up to you and how guilty you will feel once they are gone. tbh I am not in favour of selling off the silverware because it loses our links with the past. but, you don't want them, you don't like most of them and you cant appreciate them so better to try and sell them on. if you do, please go to a proper dealer and find out as much about them as you can. don't just stick them on e bay and hope. this way you will be doing justice to her memory imo.

Do you know if they are worth anything?

wobblebobblehat · 05/05/2015 16:46

I'd sell them and possibly keep one.

No point in keeping them in a box in the cupboard. Might as well try and find someone who will love them as much as your Grandmother.

Keep one (or two or three that might look good together on the wall in your new place). Sell the rest.

If they were plates that she had painted - i.e. were in some way personal to her - then I could see an argument for keeping them. But if they are some random collectable, then not so much.
What does your mum/dad think of the idea? The sale might upset them, so best to talk it through with them first.

knittingdad · 05/05/2015 16:48

Whoever you sell them to will likely appreciate them a lot more than you will. That has to be a good thing.

ouryve · 05/05/2015 16:48

YANBU. Better that someone enjoys them.
