AIBU?

Not to care about my car?

About 18 months ago I bought an old car with very low mileage (was previously owned by an old man) for about 3k. I learned to drive late in life, so this is only my second car. The first was written off when DP had an accident in it that was not his fault.
We live very rurally, down an unpaved track.

Tonight, one f my neighbors called around to tell me that he had reversed into my car by accident, and has slightly dented the bumper and scraped the side a little bit. I went to look at the damage and it was as he had said so I told him not to worry about it.
I was telling a friend this earlier and he said I was crazy not to pursue it as neighbour has actually damaged my car.
But it's only scratches and dents, which the car already has plenty of. At the angle and speed my neighbour was reversing, he's highly unlikely to have caused any functional damage, And I don't really care what my car looks like, so AIBU just to let this slide?

I had an old banger once and another bump or scratch wouldn't have bothered me. My car now is a different story. If someone sneezed too close to it they'd be getting my wrath!

No I don't think you are unreasonable to let it slide. Personally I think it's very nice of you. Some people seem to want to extract every penny from people they feel is rightfully theirs. Obviously, if you did really care about your car, then it would also be fine to get it fixed and make the neighbour pay. But it's kind of you not to!

Most people would have exchanged insurance details etc. If you don't give a shit then you don't. A lot of people would have used this as an excuse to get the whole thing repaired. You sound great tbh. I love a beat up old car.

YANBU - DH scratched our car the other day on a bush and MIL was getting oin a right state about it "Oh no! You've scratched your car! Oh no" I said it didn't matter and she said "It DOES matter - it's your pride and joy"
Hmm
yes - a 12 year old Berlingo which is literally held together with gaffer tape never mind all the previous scratches and bumps on it is our "pride and joy"
Hmm

it's a car - if you don't mind or don't care enough to worry then, it's not a problem!

Someone opened their door into my car once in a carpark. They were horrified but I just laughed it off. I wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't of witnessed it. My car is to get me from A to B, I don't get it why people are so precious over them.

I have always had older cars, not bangers but like you, nothing where I would worry about another dent or scratch. Then a few years ago I got a new car via a relative. I hated every minute! I was constantly worried about the state of the damn car. So I got rid of it and bought another old car. Love it. And if a neighbour backed into it, I would not worry either.

Wouldn't really bother me as I he person apologised, only minor damage etc. however if this happened to my DH car he'd be furious and devastated that his car had been damaged!

I like driving a scratched and dented old banger! It makes people in fancy cars think twice before cutting me up! Grin

It depends on the car. My banger has been scraped and knocked several times and I don't care. I would care if someone scraped or knocked my nice car.

Totally with you op.

I was in an accident a few weeks ago, and the amount of people who are surprised I'm not claiming for personal injury after a sore neck and a couple of day headaches.

People are weird about stuff.

Yeah, if it was an actual nice car, then I might have cared more. But I would be foolish to buy a nice car with my lifestyle.
Tbh, I wasn't so much being nice as struggling to give a shit. Grin I was more annoyed that the neighbour made me got off the couch and walk down the cold lane to look at my car than anything else.

I had a thread about being the neighbour who thought I accidentally scratched otheroneighbours (old bangery) car. I was really upset, embarrassed and scared how much it would cost. I don't know the neighbour as it's apartment blocks so left a note and waiting only to get a text saying they'll be contacting their insurance company but went on to say only joking just forget about it. That text made my year!!

I did previously extremely minorly scratch another car of someone who worked in thepsame building, it was barely visible and she charged me €400 which I paid up but she never got it fixed and it's given her a really bad name in her place of work and I've had her colleagues come to me to say they were disgusted she charged so much for something practically invisible (she told them not me)

My parking has since improved Grin

It's such a lovely feeling when your car gets to that stage. I have so many dents in mine now I don't know where they came from.

My car is so battered I have been known to edge our gate open with the bumper it when it blows shut :)

Great feeling.YANBU

My last car was like that. It was known affectionately as The Shed.

My current car I am VERY precious about and choose where to park very carefully still.

I have a very old banger, S reg. I wrapped it round a gate and someone has smacked it up the bum too. Don't think I will out myself because I have no friends but my daughter bought me an autobot sticker which is on the back of my car. It's actually a transformer not a rusty pile of shit.

My current car I got 400 off of the price when I bought it as it already had a big dent in it. I don't care really, cars are to get from A to B and as long as the engine works then it's all good!

I've had a dent/bump/scratch hole type thing on the front wing of my car for a year now. It still works so why spend hundreds on cosmetic work?

I like this attitude to cars. I have a battered xc90, 9 years old and previous owner was clearly very shit at parking - hey ho, it means I don't give a shit when a great big scratch appears on the drivers door, my dc/dog get mud all over it, or I drive it through a load of twigs sticking out on the road……..etc! I think there is a strange bit of status to a battered old car.

Also, I find men who spend loads of time over their shiny, perfect cars really rather unattractive. It's just a car ffs.

Littlepeas my car would have been at the time the dogs things. Alloys, spoiler, I have coloured brake shoes. Was top of the range at the time. She still looks bloody good I think. I roll old school. Still hanker after a Renault 5 GT Turbo. Hubba hubba.

Yanbu! There are perks to having beat up old stuff.. You don't stress about it getting damaged. I was thinking the same recently about our cheap couch getting various stains from our 1 year old.. I would be stressing if we'd spent thousands. I don't want to be that person!

BillThePony · 04/05/2015 23:32

Yanbu, my car is a shit heap, I wouldn't be able to tell what dents were new or old.

People keep asking me when I will get a new one! I love my car she runs like a dream, is cheap to fix and has never let me down.

Report
BreconBeBuggered · 04/05/2015 23:40

We bought ours new. It's the only car we've ever owned, and we're determined to run the thing into the ground before we get another one. There's plenty in life to stress about. A few scratches and dents on a functioning vehicle don't qualify. YANBU.
