Hotel Rooms Confusion

I am totally prepared to be told IABU, I just cannot work it out.

I booked a holiday never again for myself and four friends to Dublin, with flights and two hotel rooms, so there would be two of us in one room and three in another. There was no discussion ahead of time about who would share with whom and we are all really close, been mates for more than 20 years so I didn't think any issues would arise.

The five of us shared the cost of the holiday equally. Again, I didn't think of asking who would be in the double and who in the triple and/or making any financial adjustment for this.

A couple of weeks after the booking, one of the women has said she would like a single room in exchange for her share in the other rooms, so we will be in two doubles plus one single.

When I called the holiday company they said we would have to book a single room and this would cost an extra £154. I have told my friend and she said she would pay this but wants a refund on what she already paid towards the double rooms.

I cannot quite get my head around it all, maths isn't my strong point, but I think the holiday company are correct, and that as we would need a whole extra room, the cost should go up. I don't think it is fair to spread that cost over the remaining four of us as it is only going up because she wants a single room.

AIBU?

Yes, she is correct. She should pay for the single room which is £154.

The previous amount that you paid for the two rooms then should be divided by 4 instead of 5.

If you provide the exact amount, I can work it out for you! Smile

But the 4 of you are now getting the benefit of double rooms. If the single pays for her room , the others should pay half each of a double.

MissDuke · 02/05/2015 16:55

I think she should pay for her room, and the others should split the cost of the other two rooms between the four of you. Clarify the cost now for the initial two rooms - if the deal included meals then the cost should go down slightly for four than it was for five surely.

But was the triple room more expensive than the double?

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/05/2015 16:56

So the single room costs 154? She won't now be using the double so she should just pay for her room. Presumably the other rooms cost a little more than a single each... That will mean that the people sharing a double will pay half of a double each. Less than what she is paying, right?

I suppose that your costs will go up a little because it is split between less people, but you get the benefit of less people sharing.

I saw you included the flights too. Fairest way would be to split the cost of flights equally. And split the hotel rooms the way I stated in previous post. Again, if you provide the full amount of all involved, someone will work it out for you. I do think in the future, you should split the cost of the hotel rooms amongst those sharing i.e. The three sharers to split the cost of one room three ways and the two sharers to split the cost of one room two ways. Sharing with one is easier than sharing with two I feel!

Two problems -firstly I don't know how much the rooms were as bought as a package, but I guess if I called the holiday company, yet again, they will be able to break it down for me.

Secondly, I reckon the other travellers will say they agreed to pay £x and that they don't now want to pay more just so that she gets the benefit of a single room IYSWIM?

If everyone thinks IABU though I will have to ask the others if they are willing to cough up. Seriously I won't ever do this again Sad

Your friend is right. The two doubles should be paid between 4 and she should pay the single.

Fairest thing split flights, then the four split rooms and she pays for her single. However depends on your booking. Best thing phone and get breakdown

I get that they don't want to but the fact is that they are paying for what they are using; half of a double room.

In future, just assume everyone is going to be a PITA and discuss EVERYTHING beforehand.

Can you get the triple room changed to a double if it's cheaper.

I can see a problem where the sharers in the double get a smaller room than the sharers in the triple. Not all hotels but some of course.

The actual cost has increased by £154 so she should pay that cost. No-one else should have to pay any extra so she is not due any refund.

I don't understand how things like this aren't all agreed in advance of the booking! She is being unreasonable to now claim that she cannot share!

How annoying. I would ask if the company can give you a breakdown so you can divide the cost fairly. Or speak to the others and see what they suggest.

Thanks so much for all the responses, it's good to get lots of views.

It was booked through expedia and is a flight and hotel package with no meals.

We have done this type of thing before and had three of us in one room and two in another and still split it between the five of us equally so I thought it would be OK. We wouldn't normally discuss beforehand who was sleeping where, and have been known to swap halfway through a holiday!!!

To be honest I would happily pay whatever extra just to keep everyone happy but I can see it causing a problem with the others and I can do without the hassle at the moment.

I think I will try to work out how much extra the others would have to pay, but I do think they will say they think it's unfair. If I gave people the choice of paying less for the triple then they all would have gone for that option rather than the double, as normally we all just bunk down wherever.

We discussed this holiday for months and at no point did she say she wanted a single. If she had then maybe everyone would have agreed to still split the cost five ways but I don't think they will now.

Expedia say we have paid for two double hotel rooms, one of which will have an extra bed in it. If we want another room then that's what we have to pay for. There will be extra room in one of the rooms, but as we had no idea who would be in that room, I don't know how to go about sharing the cost.

The friend who wants a single room should be the one arranging it, working out new costs and informing people of the new costs.

Find out the cost of a triple room, divide by 3 then ask all 3 people and yourselves to chip in 1/3 of that cost.

I agree, it sounds like a nightmare.

What I would have done, was find out the cost of the triple and double combined, divide by 5 (cost A)
Find out the cost of 2 doubles, divide by 4 (cost B)

Refund her the (hopefully small) difference between the two between the 4 of you.
Yes, there are now a little extra cost involved, but next time you will remember what a nightmare she was and either not invite her or sort sleeping arrangments out before hand :)

Personnaly I would make her pay for the room and be done with it, but that may make for an awkward holiday!

What do the other 3 people think?

OK, I have looked into it and actually all the rooms were £154 so I guess it's one of those hotels where they have no single rooms and you just pay a room rate regardless of how many people in it.

I don't think it is going to go down well if I ask everyone for more money, when for two of the travellers, everything will be as it was before, they will be in a double room. For the other two, they will have a bit more space in their room, but they weren't bothered about sharing anyway.

I think I might take chaletschools advice and ask her if she wants to approach everyone about the booking and see if people are up for sharing the cost.

I don't want to dripfeed, and it probably isn't relevant, but the one who wants her own room earns six figures, as does her husband, and the rest of us have call centre/TA/admin jobs. If she really really wanted the single room she could easily afford it.........

That will go from £61.60 each to £77 each for the four of you and £154 for your friend. So an increase of about £16 each. Not too bad surely?

Report
Musicaltheatremum · 02/05/2015 18:10

I got that too Fairnuff it's only a small increase.

Report
petalunicorn · 02/05/2015 18:14

Her choice means you are all paying £77 instead of £61.60 for your room. Ask if she's prepared to pay her original cost so others don't have to pay for her choice - I only say that because of the difference in affordability for you all.

saturnsarah · 02/05/2015 18:15

OK, I will bite the bullet and see if she wants me to ask the others for the £16 ish extra.

No OP, as HER to ask everyone for the extra £16! This isn't your problem!

Definitely insist SHE has to ask the others. The other friends agreed to go on a holiday that would cost X amount, she's the one that's changed it so she can ask them to cough up. I think she IBU expecting you to make arrangements for her.
