Stuck in with a broken shoulder bloody friends on a loop on comedy central I can't help but notice their myriad character flaws that passed me by in the show's heyday.
Ross...whiney, needy, jealous,pompous, controlling asshat.
Monica...shrill, controlling, ocd over competitive harpy.
Phoebe...selfish, weird, domineering hippy.
Rachel....entitled, manipulative, materialistic, self absorbed princess.
Joey....thick, sexist, self deluded meathead who leeched off chandler for ten years
And to make matters worse poor chandler was always the one left out and considered the least attractive Grin boy I need to get back to work soon!!Confused

Ross had serious issues. Emotionally abusive and just horrible.
Joey was sleezy and sexist.
Chandler I quite liked. Fucked up but he knew it.
Monica I liked in the early series. She became a parody of herself in later series though.
Phoebe I liked too.
Rachel I am a fan of and I actually think the series did her a disservice. She is always described as a spoilt princess but we rarely see evidence of this. It took a great deal of courage to not marry Barry and start a new life on her own without the support of her parents. She ends up with a great job too.

Phoebe is a truly vile character. Will try to think of examples but much of what she says and does is awful.

I agree with pp re Rachel. Actually comes across quite well. Monica I find likeable as she's so aware of her flaws.

And agree chandler is by far the best guy!

KingJoffreyFanciesDarylDixon · 25/04/2015 16:36

None of them were likeable.

Then they did How I Met Your Mother which was basically Friends without the PITA vegetarian (nothing against vegetarians but did she need to mention it every five minutes?) and none of them were likeable either...

SlaggyIsland · 25/04/2015 16:38

OP I couldn't agree more. He should have got some different friends that weren't pricks.

finnbarrcar · 25/04/2015 16:39

Phoebe insisted Rachel couldn't use a massage voucher at a corporate spa then ended up working there! Grrrr

Yeah but Richard was lush as anything

TwoAndTwoEqualsChaos · 25/04/2015 16:41

Totally, Laurie!

brusselsproutwarning · 25/04/2015 16:41

Never mind chandlers personality, his fingers on one of his hands are short. Honestly. His middle finger and his ring finger on one hand are short. I found it quite distracting.
I wouldn't in rl. Just on TV. Can't watch Friends anymore without staring at his fingers on that one hand...

LaurieFairyCake · 25/04/2015 16:42

No, phoebe already worked there and didn't want Rachel to see her.

As she was embarassed at having to work there

KingJoffreyFanciesDarylDixon · 25/04/2015 16:44

Pheobe also used to mug people.

Sparklingbrook · 25/04/2015 16:44

I had forgotten how cringey it was until I saw a couple of episodes recently, I don't like any of the characters much, and the situations they found themselves in were fairly ridiculous looking back.

I think I will consign it to 'stuff i used to watch' Grin

finnbarrcar · 25/04/2015 16:48

I think I hate Ross the most to be fair and phoebe a close second. Like mike "first name crap, last name bag" hannigan would have looked twice at the despotic old crusty....i really need to get back to work lol Grin

Phoebe mugged people when she was a child on the street

Not as an adult Grin

itsonlysubterfuge · 25/04/2015 16:51

Chandler, the one who cheated with his best friend's g/f? The one who lied all the time? I'd far rather my boyfriend be a bit stupid and sexist, with a genuinely kind heart rather than lie to cover his mistakes all the time.

minkGrundy · 25/04/2015 16:54

Ross was indeed an asshat. I didn't see it at the time. I see it now. EA FW.

Rachel was ok.
But yes, Chandler was the good guy...with bad jumpers.

KingJoffreyFanciesDarylDixon · 25/04/2015 16:54

Didn't Chandler want to action the extra twin?

Nice guy..

KingJoffreyFanciesDarylDixon · 25/04/2015 16:55

Auction.

finnbarrcar · 25/04/2015 16:57

Agreed that he was very badly written regarding the twins birth story.

Since it was put on Netflix, DH and I have had a Friends-Athon and watched them all Blush
I think it has stood the test of time quite well.

Bearing in mind the characters are just stereotypes of NYorkers, I think they nailed them quite well. I've met bloody loads of real life Ross', Monica's and Rachel's in particular.

Totality22 · 25/04/2015 16:59

Wowser. Some people have massively over thought this!!!

Love Chandler but oddly all my fave episodes are Ross ones.

NightsOfGethsemane · 25/04/2015 17:00

Oh the whole adoption storyline was horrible and cringy.
