AIBU?

To think that advertising Vaping products on TV is wrong

Recently I've thought about this a fair amount and have come to the conclusion that I really don't feel it's a good idea to advertise this stuff on TV. Cigarettes are obviously banned from pretty much all advertising now, I know that technically these things are a 'nicotine replacement/giving up tool' and advertising Nicorette gum for example is common place but can't help but feel it somewhat glamorises the use of nicotine. Many folks I know use these instead of fags now, to me it's no different than advertising fags themselves because ultimately they do the same job albeit in different ways!

I'm sure plenty will disagree with me on this but I see lots of young people use these and I'm sure I've read a few times before that many of the youth trying them weren't addicted to smoking in the first place, and perhaps advertising them so freely plays a part in this.

Thoughts? AIBU to think this is a bit wrong or am I overthinking on a non-issue here?

IMO We are now in the same place with vaping as we were with smoking 40 years ago.

YANBU. I actually think I'm more addicted to vaping than I was to smoking. Wish I'd just had the strength to quit a year ago.

Jessica this is one of the things I'd wondered about actually. I'm a smoker and I know when I've had a fag roughly how long I can go without thinking about having another. With a puff on a Vaping thingy I've literally bugger all idea what dosage I'm actually taking and what that equates to in terms of having a fag.

It's not just that. I never used to smoke in the house, car, anywhere other than in my own garden or outside a pub. Now, I keep finding myself just puffing away watching TV in the evening. In fact, this thread has inspired me to quit properly - thanks!

Yabu. The issue with smoking isn't that it's addictive it's that it is harmful and addictive. Vaping isn't harmful and is saving thousands from the harmful affects of smoking.

Lots of people I know use vaping instead of fags now Yes, and that's a good thing. it's not the nicotine in fags that kills, it's the other chemicals. Nicotine is a stimulant, no different to caffeine.

I read recently that Vaping devices will soon come under the same close scrutiny and research as medical devices and that's a good thing too as they are currently untested. Still better than fags though.

I'm all for advertising vaping tbh. I do think they should be more regulated but if young people see vaping as cooler than actual smoking, that can only be a good thing.

Itsbetter

you have no idea whether vaping is harmful or not. The liquid is oil based so theres drops of flavoured, unregulated oil settling on your lungs every time you vape....

Fags are terrible but nobody KNOWS if vaping is less/more/equally as harmful but it is being advertised as 'safe' as fags once were.

I think in 20/30 years time there will be another smoking-related disease thats rife due to the vaping craze.

Stopping smoking is great but i am less than conviced by vaping as a method tbh.

froggio just to correct you nicotine is completely different to caffeine.......

Nicotine is widely used as a pesticide and is one of the most effective ones at that and your comparing it to caffeine outstands me......

Nicotine is still a harmful drug though and promoting it in this fashion just feels wrong to me. Also as Primary points out Vaping is still a relative unknown as far as I'm aware.

That's not to say I don't support folks giving up smoking! I'm not convinced that Vaping is necessarily a great method as yet, though I suppose I'm open minded on it (not ready to give up quite yet myself mind)

The stimulant effects of nicotine in humans are very similar to caffeine. Yes, as very high doses nicotine is very dangerous and yes it has been used as an insecticide in the past but low doses used in cigarettes, patches, vaping simply have a stimulant effect similar to caffeine. That's why I'm comparing it to caffeine, worridmum. The nicotine is not the harmful bit of a fag. It is the stimulant and addictive bit but per se not harmful.

I don't think inhaling anything into your lungs apart from medication, should be normalised, which advertising does. There's an argument that vaping is a "treatment" got an addiction I suppose so could fall under the umbrella of medication but there's certainly no need to advertise it.

Is there any evidence that non-smokers are beginning to use e-cigarettes? If it is being used primarily by cigarette smokers as a way of minimising the harm their nicotine use causes to others then I don't see why it should be treated any differently to nicotine gum or patches.

There is evidence that young people are using vaping who wouldn't necessarily have ever smoked. It was on the radio in Canada so don't have the study but it was a study.

You can vape without taking it into your lungs so you still get the nicotine hit, this is what i am doing after discovering it.

I think that anything which pushes smokers away from smoking is a good thing. Vaping is just another form of NRT - if you ban vaping ads then Nicorette/Nicotinell ads should also be banned.

If it wasn't for vaping I would still be smoking, I'd still be rattling when I breathed and breathless when I walked. I'd also smell bad and be irritable every hour or so.

I can now go a full 8 hours without nicotine and not miss it. I've never been able to do that before.

Vaping may well save my life.

A couple of really big US surveys found that the use of e-cigarettes by teenagers has significantly increased in the last few years, so there almost certainly are people who vape who have never smoked. Which is concerning because they are not using electronic cigarettes as a way to stop smoking, but starting nicotine addictions by vaping. Whether they will then become smokers, or just suffer some as yet unknown health risks from vaping is unknown, but the survey showed middle school children using cigarettes, so some relatively young children vaping. On the other hand the rates of cigarette use in the same age group continues to decline.

My friend works for a marketing company for one of the vaping companies and there is some change coming up where they are being legislated impacting the way they market. Having just woken up I can't recall exactly what it was!

There is no oil in e-liquid. None at all. E-liquid is made up of Propylene Glycol and Vegetable Glycerin with flavouring. With or without Nicotine.

I hate that people can vape indoors. I was in a restaurant recently and this woman was almost invisible beneath a giant fog of the stuff. Horrible.

Report
ComposHatComesBack · 22/04/2015 09:05

'The stuff' is water vapour. I know it is odd to see people sitting inside puffing on something but it is in no way comparable with breathing in cigarette smoke.

Report
avocadotoast · 22/04/2015 09:11

Meechimoo, me too. There's a guy who sits in the lobby of our building at work like lord of the fucking manor puffing away. He obviously isn't allowed to do it in his actual office, but somehow is still allowed to do it in the building. It's bonkers.

Am I right in thinking that still no impartial safety studies have been published on vaping and e-cigs?
