AIBU?

To feed DH fish fingers /spag and tom sauce over Easter?

DH was supposed to sort out visiting IL's for Easter. I need to do the shopping today. He hasn't done it. I don't feel I can call and ask MiL because last time I asked her to do something she caught a cold off of Dd and we've never heard the end of it. I cant promise the DC won't pass her on something else.

That means I have to potentially shop for 4.5 days today. Have two bus rides to get to shop. It is blowing a gale and pissing it down (although heavy bits of shopping will help weigh down buggy!) and I don't feel like carrying the whole lot back. We have fish fingers in the freezer, and tins of tomato in the cupboard and spaghetti in the cupboard.
I did ask DH to get some heavy stuff but he has a meeting today so he can't (I know, I should have thought before , but I've been crazily busy this week and was out all day yesterday so didn't do a preliminary shop then). and I'm being lazy as I really don't feel like carrying everything home

So AIBU to feed them freezer food or basic pasta if we're not invited to the IL's?

Can you not do an online shop and get it delivered..?

Yep get it delivered or dh can go any day over the next 4 days surely. It's easter not the apocalypse

However surely food for 5 days doesn't actually weight that much? You sound like you have basics at home so just get some meat/ fish/ veg

Can you book a supermarket delivery? Is there any reason you can't go shopping tonight or tomorrow (or Saturday or Monday)? Are you happy to eat spaghetti & tins of tomatoes until Tuesday? I wouldn't but my children would

Your MIL sounds a treat...not inviting you as dd "gave" her a cold!!!!

If no delivery slots coukd you afford bus there/ taxi back? Or are there no friends who could do you a favour?

Is your DH off tomorrow for bank holiday? He/ you all could go then, no?

Click and collect if there's no delivery slots, get dh to pick it up on the way home?

Take it from your post you no car. Do what my gran did (no longer with us) walk or take bus to shops then take taxi home with food as she didnt pay for road tax, car insurance, petrol or buying a car she said her old age pension can pay for a taxi back. Otherwise shop online! How many days are the shops closed for?

Is there a reason you can't do online shopping, I'm sure there are slots still available if you don't mind an obscure time, mine's tomorrow too

I would agree that shops don't close for Easter like they used to, somewhere is open.

Tell him to go and get the shopping, it's not like today is the only day the shops are open...

Mine would prefer that to a full on Easter meal....can I send them round?

Saturday is the only day they are open here. He refuses to shop at the weekend and when there are likely to be lots of people. It never crossed my mind to do an online shop... But my main problem is I don't know how many meals I need to cater for. We might be out for two days, so I don't know when to set delivery for (plus which, we have to pay extra as w are out of the standard delivery zone and they don't deliver alcohol) as I don't know when we might be at home. Argh!

But a friend just called and suggested a coffee. She was so horrified that I was on my way to the bus (really blowing a gale here) that she has offered to take me in her car and she'll do her shopping this morning too Grin I'm in luck today!

There is nothing wrong with eating that over Easter!

Firstly try to get an order delivered.
Send dh when he gets home or before he sees his mum.
Get bus there taxi back.
Are there no local corner shops you can use just for now.

How is it any different buying food in store for an unknown number of people to cater for than online?

Glad you have car this morning but I would def look at using online in future. I can't believe anyone even with full access to a car shops in store for big shop anymore. Most supermarkets do free delivery over certain amount or at certain times

Not sure it matters that it is easter what you eat. I would do an online shop if I could get a slot (we ordered last night and got a slot tonight), or could you call out for a takeaway if you fancy something a bit special. Failing that to add variety, couldn't your DH at least call at a petrol station for a few staples on his way home?

Your mil sounds a bit of a nightmare but it is such a pain not knowing what you are doing, I think you should call her. Put on sweet concerned voice and say you can't be sure DC are cold free but they are not showing any symptoms and you would all love to see her if she would be well enough.

I gave dh and ds2(17) fish fingers and oven chips last night as we were in a rush with piano lessons for ds3 and a concert and rehearsal for ds2 in two different places almost at the same time aargh. They said it was the best meal they had eaten in ages (which says a lot about my cooking).

I'm glad you have a lift. It's actually a lovely day here!

Wow he sounds like a right prince!!!!
Tough shit basically. You don't drive - he does - you shop together at the weekend. Blimey it's not rocket science!
Or.... is this the tip of the selfish iceberg?

I'm sorry - but is there something wrong with fish fingers that I am not aware of? I know you can't have them every day but am I detecting some anti fish finger snobbery on here??
Yes - OP your chap sounds like a bit of a selfish git.

We live in the back of beyond! Here the shops shut early the day before Good Friday, so everything will be closed by the time DH gets home. MIL is lovely really, she just has a huge problem with colds. And children with colds.

Gale force winds here today. Problem with online shopping is no alcohol is delivered, we pay extra for delivery because we are outside the "city" and there is a much more limited choice (which I personally think is crazy) and not so many special offers as in the supermarket.

I'll have to call her later anyway, because I need to ask her to come next month to babysit so I can go to parents evening. But I don't want to be responsible for her getting ill again... I usually warn her but this time i really didn't know Dd had a cold. We'd been out the day before accompanying a school trip for DS and then I dropped her off with Mil at 8am because I had to get DS to the doctor. When I came back MIL was glowering because DD's nose was running. She clearly had caught something from the school trip the day before, but I honestly had no idea.

What's the difference in price between an online delivery charge and the bus fares and/or taxi fares that you would need to pay to get there (or even the petrol if your dh were to drive there)?

Can you buy some nice store cupboard stuff and freezer stuff so that you are ok if you do stay behind but the stuff won't be wasted if you do go to your PIL?

Look if nothing has been arranged by now then just take it as read you are not going anywhere and arrange to have meals at home for the full Bank Holiday weekend. If your DH then announces that a visit is planned tell him it is tough, you have made other arrangements and he should have sorted something sooner.

Are you not in the UK? I assume so as online shopping here includes alcohol and shops are open tomorrow.
