am needing a new washing machine, so I think, check out the reviews section on MN

the Miele washing machines are very popular there, great reviews.....so I google them, jesus christ they are like over £1000!!!

I know its all middle class shit on here but seriously??

Well as you've stated, MN is very middle class and they do tend to buy Miele and Bosch. I'd never heard of these ranges until I did a few cleaning jobs when I was younger in a very mc area and there they all were. They have more money and therefore they will have more expensive/better quality, take your pick, items in their homes.

I got a nice Hoover 1500spm machine from Currys for £219, reduced from 399.00, this was last year but they always have offers going. It does the job.

Bosch is posh?
Hark at me, I'm dead posh then!

In defence of Miele - I've had a Miele washing machine for years now with no problems (touches wood!) and I think my sister has had 3 more ordinary washing machines during this time so I think they are worth it if you can pay the money up front. I have got the cheapest one as I've never had any need for more than about 3 washing cycles - who needs all the ones they put on pricier models?

I'm dead posh. I have a Miele and when I pick my nose I put my pinky in the air.

Can't you review anything you like on there though? So it just reflects the demographic of the reviewers.

Didn't say Bosch was posh Meechinoo.

OP you're not wrong. MN do tend to REALLY cater for the moneyed and I think that their demographic has changed a lot over the past few years.

So MNHQ if you're listening perhaps it's something that needs to be taken into consideration when choosing advertisers for the site?

Boden and Miele are all very well for SOME Mumsnetters but I would question if it is indeed the majority any more.

I think a lot of it has to do with what your life is like.

If you have the time and the money to take your time, pick out a nice model, check it out, get it ordered and fitted etc etc.....then you have time to review it. The rest of us are more usually going...

"OH FUCK!! THE WASHERS BROKE!!" realising that we have minus figures in the bank so leg it to Currys to get the cheapest one you can take away with you, put it in and breathe a sigh of relief. The last thought on your mind is to review it, you need to get the back log of washing out of the way!

Thats not having a go at anyone who does have time to review etc just pointing out that those of us who buy in a slight more panicky situation will probably not bother to review and that does leave a glaring gap in the reviews on here.

You have inspired me, I am going to review my much cheaper washing machine!

I have a Hoover washing machine and it is just fine. (That's my review!)

When we needed a new dishwasher, I bought the cheapest Bosch available from Currys. It was 239 pounds. I didn't use John Lewis because it would have taken them over a week to deliver it instead of a day and it cost 50 pounds more.

If I was looking for a washing machine or other appliance today, I would buy from Currys or //www.ao.com as I have heard good things about them.

Again, I might look for a Bosch at the cheaper end of the range - I wouldn't expect to pay more than 300 for it. Our current washing machine is a Zanussi and cost about 250 pounds - it does the job fine is 9 years old.

Whatever you do, don't look at the holidays section - they will make a thousand pound washing machine look cheap and cheerful.

My Hoover machine lasted about 10 years and I gave it away still functional...and bought a Siemens, which after 22 months needed a new pump as it had packed up Hmm

Bosch, Siemens, Neff, all the same company. Great CS (didn't have to pay for the repair) but still.

I have had Miele appliances (I only ever buy these things on sale/ex display) and they have lasted very well however getting in touch with the company is a nightmare and they are a bit stuck up imo.

I worked out long ago that it was a false economy to buy very cheap appliances (my mum had about 5 washing machines during the 10 years of my Hoover - don't know why I got lucky with the Hoover, it was from Argos, about £150)

but it all seems a bit random now. Miele WMs have cast iron frames which is what makes them last a long time and very £££

I've posted a miele review but that's not because I've paid 1k on an appliance it's because I was given the product to review. Miele often do product tests so that may be why there's a few reviews in the review section?

We do have a twelve year old Siemens washing machine, which cost eye watering money new.

I've just had the engineer out this morning to replace a small component - age related failure.

That's after nearly twelve years of being mercilessly thrashed, with twelve loads or so a week every week. I'll keep it until it dies irreparably.

There's a reason they have a ten year guarantee; the engineer probably has a vested interest but he said that that workload would have burned out three other ordinary machines.Confused

The dishwasher is a (second hand from EBay £75) Bosch - again, no problems whatsoever.

YABU. There's nothing to say that only people with small budgets should be catered for on MN, and nor should they be. Do you think only one section of society is worthy of having reviews relevant to them or something?

If there aren't enough budget reviews then you'd have a valid point if you complained about that and I'd agree with you, but it just comes across as reverse snobbery to moan that there are reviews for more expensive items on a website that is supposed to support all parents.

I also have an LG. Really really love it! It was a pricier model but got it half price as it was ex-display. I got my LG tumble dryer less than half price as it was ex-display and had a dent in the front. Both are fab!

I don't think it's that everyone is rich. I think it's that, if you spend out on an item, you're more likely to go to the bother of leaving a review.

I have a Zanussi washing machine. I don't know how much it cost because my late DH brought it with him 20 years ago and it was 12 years old then. I've never had to call for anyone to mend it.

Can't beat Zanussi.

the poster who said they were given a miele to review has made sense of the amount of mieles being reviewed, I didnt know that had happened.

I've got an Indesit that was less than £250. I very much doubt a £1,000 washing machine would (a) be four times quieter (b) fit four times as much washing in (c) be four times quicker or (d) last four times as long.
