Our family cat got knocked down and killed outside our house last night, she wasn't even three years old. She had five kittens last year which we gave to family/friends who we knew well. I had been a single mum with my girls until my DP moved in and she was our first pet we ever had. The girls were devastated but are doing ok - i'm a nurse and had a day off today luckily but just feel so awful, I really didn't expect to feel like this. She was our family pet but she was really my cat and we loved each other to bits Sad

I'm so sorry. I remember being amazed at how much grief I felt when our family dog died. It's really hard. Thanks

of course you feel sad - pets are family too Flowers

we had a goldfish and we were all devastated when it died. It was a real character...

snail cannibal-murder-suicide sounds grim...and kind of sticky...

glad to see you Derek btw (you don't know me but anyway...)

So sorry to hear about your cat.Never be ashamed to grieve for a pet.It sets your kid's a good example. We've had 40 years of marriage,2 children,3 grandchildren and 7 cats that lived long lives. However we also had 2 who were killed when only very young. We all grieved and still remember them. One in particular made me very sad for well over 6 months. No idea why. I remember our family cat being killed when I was about 9, and we all huddled together on my brother's bed with my mum and cried together. It was devastating. Give it some time and in a few months you may feel ready for another one who will give you as much joy as this one did, hopefully for a lot longer.

YANBU. Pets are part of the family, it's understandable you are upset. (I could still cry thinking about my cat dying three years ago!). Flowers

I remember that after my dad died, my sisters and I found lots of pictures of our dog who had died 4 years earlier, and we probably got more tearful over the dog! She was unconditional love, and we grew up with her. 22 years on, I'm getting tearful as I write this, as I still miss her! (Still miss my dad too!)

Take the time to grieve your little one...

Yanbu - one of my cats was hit by a car and killed last year. Pets are family members too and their passing a bereavement Flowers

A pet is never 'just a cat/dog' they are a much loved, valued member of the family. I am sorry to hear about your cat, allow yourself to grieve for your friend.

That is very sad. I always mourn when any of my pets die. They are such a huge part of your life x

YANBU. A pet is a part of the family. We love them and they love us, so it's only natural to feel upset if something happens to them. I'm sorry for your loss and I hope it starts to hurt less soon.

YANBU - pets are "primary relationships" in psychotherapy-speak. We love them and they are family. She was so young as well. I'm sorry for your loss Thanks

So sorry for you, it is hard to lose a little furry friend, even for those of us who think we're tough!

I lost my DCat a couple of years ago, she was poorly and had to be put to sleep. I consider myself to be pretty detached and cool about most things, but I sobbed my heart out, both when she was diagnosed and when she died. It really took me by surprise.

I hope you and your DDs are ok and that seeing the kittens in their loving homes with your friends and family gives you some comfort Flowers

It's awful, our cat had a stroke and had to be put to sleep about 18 months ago. She drove me insane, she hated me and would only go to dd, and the arguments I had with that animal were unreal. I still howled when she went, and still miss her now. Don't miss the bites and scratches, but I even miss her hissing at me when I check on dd during the night.

Yanbu, it's awful to lose a pet. I still desperately miss my first ever cat, he was knocked over. He was an absolutely massive tabby with a boot fetish, and a real character, I was devastated when I lost him.

YANBU, I guess it's just the first pet you've lost, so it's a bit of a shock.

We've always had lots of animals, but I still miss my very special dog who died in 1999. :-(

We lost a cat last year, she was run over, and we all (DH, 2 teenage DDs and I) cried.

We had to have one of our dogs put to sleep a month ago, she had cancer and we kept her going as long as possible, but she was starting to suffer. Both DDs lay on the floor with her, sobbing.

It's the worst thing about having pets. We always say no more, because we can't bear it when they die, but there are so many that need homes, we usually end up getting another.

Flowers hope you'll feel better soon.
