AIBU?

To think this isn't normal..

My DH is currently struggling through his third bout of D&V in 7 weeks. Each time, he has been violently sick for at least 36 hours, suffered tummy pains and diarrhoea and had to have time off of work. At no point have me or dd 'caught' the bug despite lots of contact before and during his illness. Neither have any of his colleagues. I keep a very clean house generally, but always step up the sanitation when someone gets ill so there is no way he is re - infecting himself. I go though a bottle of dettol every week, bleach the toilets every day, use antibacterial bathroom cleaners etc. Today, he woke feeling rough, then got sent home after being sick at work. He threw up a meal he had eaten 15 hours previously. The food was still chunky and there was lots of it. This does not seem right to me at all. He is resisting seeing a doctor because he doesn't want to waste their time. However, his grandfather died of stomach cancer, his grandmother battled bowel cancer and he has self diagnosed IBS. AIBU to want him to get checked out? Thanks.

Not at all. It doesn't sound at all normal to suffer so frequently with d&v. Could you book him in at the GP without him knowing and force him to go?

I will probably do that to be honest. Hoping that if lots of people agree it isn't normal it will give me a bit of ammunition. Also, if other people say that it is something that happens then I might stop worrying.

My dh gets sick like this from stress. Also excess stomach acid so takes omaprazole when he feels it coming on. It helps him a lot but no its not normal so your dh needs to see his gp especially with his family history.

Your house sounds way too clean!

Your DH needs to go to the doctors. Family history aside (but not to be ignored), what is happening to him is not right and he needs to get it sorted out. Not quite sure how quick bowels move, but after 15 hours I would assume it should have been coming out of his bottom, not being vomited back up.

"I go though a bottle of dettol every week, bleach the toilets every day, use antibacterial bathroom cleaners etc."

Is this during weeks when everyone is well? If so that amount of chemicals to keep the house clean is way OTT.

That said, I think your husband should see a GP. He will not be wasting their time and would be very silly not to.

No of course it isn't normal. I wouldn't think the big C just yet though, there a many reasons why this is happening. I have diverticular disease and need antibiotics to clear up an infection caused by food becoming trapped. You need to drag him to the doctors.

Hi Loki - if/when he does go to the doctor (and I absolutely agree he should) could you tell him to ensure he states his family history?

Doctors can, just sometimes, want an easy life.

I hope all is well Daffodil

Er - GP. Definitely. I don't know if he would necessarily have transient symptoms with something serious but he should get checked out. Especially considering his history. But he might be afraid of what they say so be gentle :) Hope he's ok

if it were me i would want to get checked out especially with the family history that is there. ive never suffered with three bouts of d&v in a short space of time. has he been around anyone else that has been sick or is it just him each time?

Oh, meant to say diverticular disease is very common in the western world, very manageable and unless extreme (very rarely) doesnt affect your lifespan.

In my defence, I have two cats who are forever jumping on kitchen work surfaces. Consequently, I spray the surfaces before every use, then after to clean the mess I've made. I also like to spray the bin everyday. I don't have time to do a big 'once a week' clean on the whole house so I try to just maintain every day. Thanks all.

Thanks all. It is just him each time. I will make sure he mentions his family history when I get him to see the doc. Thanks, it is nice to know I'm not over reacting (except with the dettol!)

Hope it goes well for him

I have had similar to your DH and also have a strong family history of bowel cancer. I've already had a gastroscopy (make him take sedation) and have gastritis and hiatus hernia which explains the vomiting. I'm now waiting to have a sigmoidoscopy to check what's going on that end, although they strongly suspect it's crohns

I wish him well

When my colleague was diagnosed with crohn's disease he went through some of those symptoms?
A GP will hopefully get a referal quickly with a pattern developing quickly.

Dd suffered similar symptoms when she was about 2.
Repeated bouts of prolonged vomiting and diarrhoea, undigested food coming up the next day, severe weightloss.
Eventually diagnosed at hospital as her having a horrible case of gastroenteritis.
Even now when she has a bug, it presents itself in a similar way, it's horrible.

So there can be many many reasons as also described by pps, but it's definitely not the norm and he should be seen as quickly as possible really. Good luck.
