AIBU?

To choose Philadelphia as my crumpet topping?!

DH was feeling peckish last night so I said "we've got some crumpets - why don't you have a couple with some Philadelphia? I had that earlier." He was outraged about my choice of crumpet topping and said that crumpets are eaten with golden syrup or something similar. I've never had a crumpet with golden syrup.

AIBU? Is cream cheese on a crumpet really weird? What do you have on yours?!

PS. I just changed the subject line - the original read "AIBU to put cream cheese on my crumpet". Thought that sounded very very wrong and second reading...

That's an horrific thing to do to a poor defenceless crumpet.

Butter only!

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 03/03/2015 12:24

Both you and your husband are guilty of crumpet abuse.

Crumpets should be eaten with butter and marmite.

FeelTheNoise · 03/03/2015 12:24

Definitely cheese spread! Also marmite too Grin

Both my DS's (2 and 7) favourite crumpet topping is Philadelphia, therefore in our house YANBU! Smile

ILovePud · 03/03/2015 12:37

Mmmm you've made me want crumpets with Philadelphia now.

AlleyCat11 · 03/03/2015 12:40

Butter, of course. But me wants Philadelphia crumpets now...

moogalicious · 03/03/2015 12:42

Golden syrup Shock

butter and marmite thank you very much.

Eminybob · 03/03/2015 12:42

If you can put it on toast then you can put it on a crumpet is my opinion. And you can put anything on toast.

My favourite is probably butter and marmite.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 03/03/2015 12:43

Philadelphia and some strips of ham.

PeteCampbellsRecedingHairline · 03/03/2015 12:44

YABU. Butter or marmite only.

Philadelphia in a bagel is very acceptable.

BoredFatCat · 03/03/2015 12:44

i only have butter

AuntieDee · 03/03/2015 12:45

Oooo crumpets!! Spread with real butter, add marmite and THEN top with lashings of Phili... Mmmmm!!!

BrieAndChilli · 03/03/2015 12:53

We do marmite or jam or honey in our house
We also sometimes do grated cheese mixed with beaten egg and baked until cooked!!!!!

CitronVert · 03/03/2015 12:55

Crumpets are lovely with a poached egg on top. All the yolk goes into the holes...

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 03/03/2015 12:58

Nothing at all wrong with philadelphia, it's one of my preferred toppings, the other being poached eggs with or without ham and hollandaise sauce in an Eggs Benedict style.

Or melted cheese, or soak in egg and fry like eggy bread.

Now, golden syrup seems wrong, but each to his own.

countessmarkyabitch · 03/03/2015 13:00

Philedelphia is only ok if you put jam on top and turn it into a crumpet cheesecake.
Damn you, now I need crumpets.

PatriciaHolm · 03/03/2015 13:00

Philadelphia and marmite.

Crumpets are savoury foods. Golden syrup is not savoury!

(But then I have a very hard line between savoury and sweet. Bacon never sees maple syrup, for example...)

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 03/03/2015 13:03

Crumpets are strictly savoury, I would never put a sweet topping on one. Same with toast.

middlings · 03/03/2015 13:05

YABVVVU Butter and butter only! Maybe with a smattering of raspberry jam.

Send your DH over to Relationships. We'll be advising him to LTB.

Philly is only acceptable on bagels. And in cream cheese icing on red velvet cake. Oh and occasionally to bulk up tomato and veg sauce for the non-dairy consuming two year old. Nowhere else.

(I'm on WeightWatchers and now I want a crumpet with drippy butter and jam SadAngry)

Bobian123 · 03/03/2015 13:06

Well this has truly backfired on DH. I honestly thought I must be in the wrong to think of crumpets as savoury. I will be showing him this thread later Grin

No, it's very wrong
Either butter only or butter and marmite.
DH has jam AND peanut butter together, maybe I should LTB??

I have never thought of Philadelphia on a crumpet but in principle I can't see any harm in it. I am just a butter-on-crumpet person myself but occasionally strawberry jam.

Golden syrup - bleugh!

And words cannot describe how strongly I am opposed to marmite on anything at all

SoonToBeSix · 03/03/2015 13:10

Yabu only butter or jam goes on crumpets.

iklboo · 03/03/2015 13:12

Me: butter, butter & raspberry jam or Dairylea cheese spread

DS: butter, butter & honey or chocolate spread

DH: as DS, but also lemon curd
