I shop with ocado and very rarely get substitutes. This week was the second time in three years. i ordered a large bag of brocolli and got sent 3 little bags instead that came to same weight

Darkforcesatwork · 01/03/2015 15:10

I once ordered 4 x 4 pinters of organic milk. They sent me 4 individual pints of organic milk as replacement. Handy-lasted all of a day! Hmm

Totality22 · 01/03/2015 15:12

Ocado or Morrison's for me. You get an email on the morning of the delivery and are told about substitutes. ... which you can refuse when driver turns up. I've hardly ever had a substitution though.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 01/03/2015 15:14

Can't you tick a box to say "no subsittutes" when you place the order. I am sure that is what I used to do (have not on line food shopped for a while now but have tried most of them)

I shop online with tesco but turn substations off after a few went wrong. Particularly when I ordered a 40 piece platter for a party and they substituted it with 6 spring rolls. I did tell the six people who ate the spring rolls they were very lucky.

It really is a terrifying insight into the pickers mind, sometimes.

chrisrobin · 01/03/2015 15:18

I have deliveries from Tesco and find the substitutions are usually fine, often a slightly bigger version of the thing I have ordered e.g. 12 sausages instead of the 8 I ordered (same brand), 1kg cornflour instead of 500g, sometimes it's a different brand but the same item (e.g. Dole instead of own brand pineapple slices). There are usually 1 or 2 subs every 2nd delivery. They take any I don't want back and the money is refunded to my card.

When I shopped with Asda the subs were ridiculous- 4 or 5 each delivery and often wildly unsuitable, dishwasher liquid instead of washing machine liquid was one gem. These must have been down to the picker though, as my SiL works for Asda delivery and she says they are supposed to match as closely as possible.

I'm almost disappointed that I've never had a ridiculous substitution from tescos... the most memorable was when I ordered a £2 snack pack of sushi and instead they sent me a huge, £8 box. Unfortunately sushi doesn't last so I had to eat it all for dinner that night... sushi overkill!

Cantbelievethisishappening · 01/03/2015 15:23

Tick the don't substitute boxes.

Sorry thats but you have made me laugh... a lot Grin Bloody annoying for you though.

ghostspirit · 01/03/2015 15:24

seems like its an asda thing :/ i want to be able to shop home delivery with tesco but they wont take electron on line :(

turning of substitues would not help that much as then most my shopping would be missing.

i had 14 substitutes today most were ok part from the ones i moaned about in my op

Tesco are a bit nuts with sausages.

I ordered a pack of 8 and got two packs of 12.

And once a pack of 12 pigs in blankets were substituted with 40 cocktail sausages.

Non sausage related substitutions are always fine.

MrsPeterQuill · 01/03/2015 15:35

I ordered apples once and got onions Hmm

Didn't a poster get a small ceramic owl substituted for something once? Probably for something like toothpaste.

Pastamancer · 01/03/2015 15:36

Sainsbury's here and very rarely have a substitution. If they do substitute then they tell you straightaway and you can refuse it, the driver will take it away and you will be refunded.

iamusuallybeingunreasonable · 01/03/2015 15:38

Use Ocado, they rarely sub, what you see available is pretty much what you get. The annoying thing for me with the other shops was the subs or lack of subs, meaning I then had to go out - defeats the object

MrsMinton · 01/03/2015 15:43

Asda once substituted me sanitary items with wafer thin ham Hmm I never used them again after three attempts at shopping with them.

I use Morrisons and they are fantastic. Like a PP said you get an email prior to delivery and I've never had substitutions or missing items. Best service ever with them.

yellowsnownoteatwillyou · 01/03/2015 15:44

I ordered sanitary towels, asda bran I think, was given incontinence pads Hmm
I had given birth 2 month before, dh signed and checked for it.
I wasn't pleased.

That's the weirdest and most annoying one I've had.

hooker29 · 01/03/2015 15:51

I use Tesco every week, and don't get many substitutes but when we do they are usually similar to what was ordered. Not usually worried about the subs though......as long as i don't have to go and do the blooming shopping, I'm usually quite laid back about what they put in!

Becca83 · 01/03/2015 15:52

I ordered two of those old el paso fajita kits once from tesco and they substitited them with 8 jars of guacamole!!

Dh signed for the delivery whilst I was out and bloomin accepted it! What the hell did he think I was going to do with all that guacamole for two of us?!?

KingJoffreyObviouslyWatchesHol · 01/03/2015 15:57

I heard about someone who ordered a bottle of wine and got a garden gnome.

I'd have been chuffed...

The pickers have to offer substitutes . They are dragged into see their line manager if they don't. The computer suggests what they should offer. My friend says she is embarrassed at some of the stupid substitutes she has to make. ( That's Sainsburys)

ISolemnlySwearImUptoNoGood · 01/03/2015 16:31

I only ever shopped online once and it was the substitutes that totally put me off! (Asda btw)

I asked for a lettuce and received pickled red cabbage in a jar Hmm

I gave up with Sainsburys and their subs. The last memorable one was cat food instead of dog food Hmm. I've been back with Tesco for a few months now and whilst there is at least one per shop they've been sensible. I assume it must vary on the common sense of the picker.

Orangeisthenewbanana · 01/03/2015 16:39

We use Ocado and in a year, I think we've had 1 substitution and one occasion where the packaging on the mince was ripped. The substitution was a tub of dairylea instead of Laughing Cow triangles, so absolutely fine.

I usually place my order less than 48 hours before delivery though. Maybe it makes a difference if you do it further in advance??

dixiechick1975 · 01/03/2015 16:44

I've stopped using Asda due to random substitutions - last 2 deliveries were more substituted than not
