I really regret buying into apple stuff, it works great, until they release a new version then the updates come that you have to install in order to use the apps that no longer work. Then it just gets slower and slower. My Samsung was always the same. It should be illegal as I'm sure they do it on purpose to make you upgrade.

Wtf is the "dementia" bit in the title about?

Report

Are you talking about a phone or computer? You're phone is getting slow because you've got too much stuff on it and need to delete some apps.

This is my experience with Apple also- agree it should be illegal: it's certainly dishonest

But can you edit the thread title ? I get what you mean but you will just get a load of people coming on to complain about it Smile

I don't get what the title is meant to say. It's mostly gibberish and as far as I can see the 'dementia' serves no purpose at all. Perhaps someone can explain?

Workman blaming tools and all that.

My son said exactly the same yesterday about my ipad 2. Its slow as anything now and mobile internet keeps going offas well. Shouldnt have updated.

The title is likely to be an Apple autocorrect lol

Yanbu op. I loathe Apple stuff as its over priced tat. In fairness their stuff works well but I hate iTunes and the disposability of their gear.

Classic example is the iPhone and the market following with docking stations and their interface connection. I realise docking stations are also for iPods but we all know that Apple are dropping the iPod because most are using iPhones for everything. With this being the case then Apple are really stuffing up other manufacturers who have fitted all their docking stations with the old style connector. Great loyalty Apple.

It's not just Apple, its the nature of technology, it all eventually becomes obsolete. In order to be competitive they have to keep bringing out new products, so they don't spend time and money developing old stuff. Look what happened to Blackberry.

I'm currently using a iPhone 3GS which I've had for 5 years. Still works. It won't support IOS7 so quite a few new apps don't work on it. But it hasn't really affected me and I don't feel the need to upgrade yet.

Dementia to describe and old phone is just plain offensive btw.

@theHorseDentist: what do you use your Macbook for? Have you turned off Flash for all websites? I have turned it off, but still find my Mac struggles.

Has cheesed me off, too. We doubled the memory on my Macbook Pro, and that's it. Cannot ever put more memory in, software and website demands will soon outpace what the memory can ever keep up with. So expected total usage time about 6-7 yrs. DH had to upgrade phones for similar reasons (they stopped providing updates for the iphone4, & he writes mobile apps for living so had to get iPhone5).

I suppose this MacBook will become a word processing machine for DD in 2 yrs time & I will switch back to a high spec PC (maybe Unix variety, at least will refresh my sysadmin skills), something with better scope for motherboard, CPU & memory enhancements.

I have several Apple iPad 2am at work and they all work fine. They all update and they all work smoothly, just as the Apple iPad 3s that I have do.

my original Apple iPad stopped updating and some apps wouldn't run but a lot of that was to do with having no camera and microphone. I still use it at school as a spare and many education apps work so long as they don't need the camera function.

I never have an issue with my Apple
Phones not working/updating but I swap them every two years anyway.

And generally Apple Mac computers/laptops are much better than Microsoft based PCs and laptops at retaining their ability to work well. I need to upgrade my laptops far more quickly than friend with MacBooks.

Ditto IPods - we have the classic which they no longer make but it works fab. As does the tiny Nano.

My mother suffers from dementia and I think the thread title is incredibly offensive though I'm not expecting the OP to see that.

I have a fast and reliable 6yo Apple Mac Book Pro that runs some complex CAD software. In the time I've owned that computer my DH has replaced his windows (Sony / Samsung) laptops 3 times. He now also has a MacBook
I'm on my second Iphone in the same period, my DH had 4 android phones and then bought an iphone6
We've got a 4 yr old iPad that still works fine although DS keeps breaking the Chargers .
Technology has a short shelf life due to the pace of change but I'd say my apple stuff is doing remarkably well

Planned obsolescence is a real thing, and not a good one. But that's not what's causing your issue OP. Your devices are getting slower because a) they're full of crap that you've downloaded/created/generally picked up over the years and b) because more powerful devices have been released in the interim so the software is now designed to make use of their greater capabilities and your older machine is struggling.

Nobody is doing anything wrong - your older machine has just been overtaken by events. I do feel your pain though, because I seem to spend hours each day waiting for my iphone 4 to respond to the simplest instruction.

Back up to iTunes, restore iPhone, then reload all the stuff again. Takes a while but clears out loads of crap marked 'other' and can speed things up.

Desktop computers and laptops seem to be fine and last for ages.

iPhones and iPads however are crap after about two years IME. I phoned the Apple helpline when my iPad (1) started playing up, the chap on the phone laughed at me because it was almost three years old, he couldn't understand why I didnt just buy a new one. Hmm

It definitely should be illegal.

Report
ragged · 01/03/2015 10:36

the idea of making it illegal I find absurd, I will vote with my pocketbook in future, though.

I totally agree. My ipad 2 has become virtually unusable since the ios8 update. I haven't updated any of the other devices yet because I don't want the same thing to happen. It's undoubtedly deliberate.

Thanks glad at least one person has a sense of humour on here. It was my grandfather who has it that said it first to me, when I was saying how my phone is thinking and taking ages to respond then get all confused. Love him.

No idea about these pro stuff, but sometimes I hit a button then go away to make a cup of tea and then come back to my phone. I've wiped it several times, then it just goes back to being slow in a few weeks.

Planned obsolesence is a thing, but like pp say, the obsolesence happens anyway as tech moves on so quickly. I have an ipad 2, bought in 2010 that is still working perfectly. It has been used daily since (and been battered by the 2 DC, one of whom is younger than the ipad itself!). I have not done the last two IOS upgrades though. I'm not against the idea of upgrading to an air, but have decided to run this one into the ground first. I think 5 years constant use (and counting) represents good value
