AIBU?

to just not take anything when I'm feeling unwell

So I've got an unpleasent cold, I take nothing for it as most of the cold stuff im sure is just placebo shit full of sugar, colours and artificial flavours that long term does god knows what.

Sister is saying I'm making "life hard for myself" by doing this. But she is down the doctors almost every week with her dh or two dd (perfect reason why there should be a small charge). Her dh today went down with a cold to get the doctors to prescribe antibiotics in case he's still feeling unwell on Monday....

Aibu to just refuse lemsip and lockets?

Antibiotics aren't going to get rid of the cold virus

I never take anything unless I'm feeling really bad, then just paracetamol.

DH has a medicine cabinet full of remedies for everything - drives me mad!

I don't take anything either. You've got to just ride them out as far as I'm concerned. Hope you feel better soon.

Paracetamol only here

Lemsip is paracetamol and decongestant. I tend to just take the paracetamol in generic form (about 30p a pack).
Tbh I think people who refuse to take painkillers when in pain are "making life hard" but that's entirely your/their choice and no skin off my nose.

Do or don't. Neither of you will get a medal whichever you decide

I've also got a horrible cold. I've been taking: Sanderson's Throat Specific Mixture (disgusting but works wonders) and Beechams Flu Plus Caplets. They are making me feel much better. It's only a cold, and only affecting my head. My body is fine!

I rarely go to the doctors. DS has also had this cold, but not as bad as mine. He also rarely goes to the doctors.

IMO you and your sister ABU.

I take paracetamol if I have a headachy cold and a decongestant as colds usually give me painful sinuses, why wouldn't I? There is no virtue in suffering, but if you don't get these symptoms or the drugs don't help you then fine. Hmm

I rub on the vicks and drink lots of water and tea. Seems to work fine. Occasionally I'll take some Nurofen before bed as it makes my face stop aching if the cold is a bit heavy and lets me sleep.

Hot fresh lemon squeezed with a drop of honey

Once the worst is over change to chopped up fresh ginger in lots hot water. Var? with lemon occasionally.

Hope you feel better soon. I too steer clear of the sugar laden stuff, all pointless except to make money for manufacturers.

I don't like taking stuff, as most of it tastes gross. I also feel that if you take painkillers etc. Then you don't rest enoight to get better as you feel temporarily better.

I take whatever takes the pain away so i can get on with life with minimal disruption. I dont care what anyone else does- unless they involve me in the consequences of whatever their decision was. (I.e dont expect me to mop your brow if you refuse to help yourself first)

As long as you're not making your family's and colleagues lives a misery with your complaining about how crap you feel, go right ahead and suffer.

Yes to lemon honey and ginger that is about the extent of my cold medicines. Enjoying some frozen grapes with fennel tea right now though, they are going down well Smile

Ummmm.... lexiepix... this cold. Is it sudden? Anything you're avoiding by not taking medicine?

I don't take anything unless I absolutely cannot function and need to.

I have had horrible sinuses since half term though and I gave in and used some of DH's Sudafed the other day as I had an important, long meeting, a funeral and several other errands to get through. Good heavens, never again. I think it must have been the phenylephrine in it but I felt so agitated. Racing heart, rapid breathing, couldn't sleep that night. I phoned my Mum up and she said she had exactly the same reaction to it the one time she took it.

Showy have you been doing nasal flushes? They worked amazingly well when i had a sinus infection.

Meant to say - I am not accusing you of either of the latter two things, rather pointing out that these are the circumstances under which you would be unreasonable.

And i mean just salt water- not anything shop bought.

Report
ghostyslovesheep · 28/02/2015 21:44

well if you enjoy being in pain and/or drowning in snot go for it Grin

I have had a cold for 6 weeks now - I would have been unable to function without cold and flu Nurofen - so I take them - they work ergo I can work

I can also sleep

nowt wrong with taking nothing but they don't give you a medal or hit you with a shitty stick if you do

Take or don't take whatever you like. But v odd to moan about people taking stuff to relieve misery.

A cold may be incurable but the symptoms can be alleviated, why would you criticise somebody for that?
