... add a pertinent or witty comment?

"Oh no, I'm not place marking or anything" does not count as witty.

Excuse my ignorance Blush but, what is place marking?

Tries to think of a witty remark.

Re-uses a joke used on a previous thread -What do you call a coach driver who cuts you up?

thatsucks · 28/02/2015 12:52

marking my place

All the people typing a comment like "marking place for update" so a thread, so they can then go to 'Threads I'm On" to quickly access it. See the Facebook wedding thread for examples.

What do you call a coach driver who cuts you up btw?

Paintedpinksapphires · 28/02/2015 12:54

I've never really understood place marking, why not just set a 'watch' on the thread?

thatsucks · 28/02/2015 12:55

I don't know what do you call a coach driver who cuts you up?

MardyBra · 28/02/2015 12:56

Sometimes it's less obvious. People will use comments like "this is so funny" or "you go girl" " gets popcorn" which add nothing and just clutter up the thread.

It's better to add a thread to your watch list. You can keep track of juicy threads you have nothing to add to, but you don't need to advertise the fact that you're nosy and unhelpful.

MardyBra · 28/02/2015 12:57

Exactly pink

YANBU.
I was looking at the NAR parking thread and it's full of people place marking. It's difficult to see updates from the OP while wading through hundreds of place marking comments.

Morelikeguidelines · 28/02/2015 13:00

Lurks

chocoluvva · 28/02/2015 13:01

Ah - thank you. Yeah that's crap.

What do you call a coach driver who cuts you up?

A bustard!

Sorry for cluttering up the thread.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 28/02/2015 13:01

I heard that place marking is left over from the days before MN had the Watch function.

I think the absolute worst is just posting a "."

I don't really mind place markers TBH - it makes it feels like there is a nice friendly (?) crowd of interested people milling about on the thread. It does clog things up though, you're right about that.

I want to know about the coach driver too.

magimedi · 28/02/2015 13:01

Do people not place mark because the bookmark feature is not available on all platforms?

Mrsjayy · 28/02/2015 13:02

Just popping in to say hi Grin

MardyBra · 28/02/2015 13:02

Some of you placemarkers are just showing yourselves upGrin

OP posts:
RustyBear · 28/02/2015 13:04

Watching it would be fine if everyone else did too, but at the moment if I do I get an email every time someone posts and go to the thread just to find it's just or something similarly inane. I don't want to turn off the emails because then I'd miss the really interesting but sporadic comments on the Wolf Hall thread.

Don’t want to miss threads like this?

It's when you get totally inappropriate place marking

'I'm devestated - my twelve year old thinks she could be pregnant, just going to get a test....'

'Marking place for the result' with no advice, sympathy or support offered.

Methe · 28/02/2015 13:07

Yeah or..

"I didn't want to read and not post.. Someone who can actually be arsed to reply properly will be along soon, I'm sure"
