AIBU?

To think that there's nothing funnier than people falling over?

Inspired by Madonna's fall at last nights Brits. I can't remember the last time I've laughed so much at a live TV event, it was hilarious. Even the reporter on Sky News was trying not laugh whilst talking about it later on in the evening, and myself and my colleagues have been laughing about it all day today.

A few years ago during the bad snowfall we had there was a clip shown on ITV news of a group of people slipping over on the same patch of ice on a pavement. That made me howl as well.

What is it about people falling over that makes it so amusing?

It is awful as a fall can be bloody dangerous. Let alone for someone getting a little older.

Having said that I would like to know as I find it funny while going OMG are you all right at the same time !

I am a bad person.

PiddlePoo · 26/02/2015 17:16

Then we both must be bad people because I do the same thing.

Fractured knock of femurs make me piss my pants Hmm

*neck

PrettyFeet · 26/02/2015 17:20

Me too. Don't like doing myself though and tend to turn scarlet on thinking anyone has seen me Grin

I once went smack bang into a supermarket door thinking it was open. I made such a noise on impact that there was no way I could carry on with the idea of a shop. Scurried off and went back later Grin

OhNoNotMyBaby · 26/02/2015 17:21

I don't find it in the least bit funny actually. A fall can really shock people - and Madonna didn't look too hot for short while there. Hmm

PrettyFeet · 26/02/2015 17:25

Im sure the OP wasn't referring to bad falls or the elderly for god sake.

Let's lobby for "Youve Been Framed" to be banned Grin

farewellfigure · 26/02/2015 17:26

Oh it's awful. That horrible rising panic that you're going to laugh out loud. You're trying to act all concerned and your throat is getting all constricted as you say, 'Oh NO. Are you OK?'. It's human nature isn't it. If it wasn't, You've Been Framed wouldn't exist. Or the word shadenfreude (no idea how you spell that)!

ClumsyNinja that is awesome! Laughing out loud.

MrsTawdry · 26/02/2015 17:30

YABU I get quite upset when I see people fall.

emms1981 · 26/02/2015 17:31

A dad fell over outside school yesterday, he got caught in someones pe bag and the teacher was trying not to laugh

partialderivative · 26/02/2015 17:34

People trying to swat away wasps makes me laugh as well. Especially if you cannot see the wasp that is annoying them.

ender · 26/02/2015 17:35

I won't say YABU because you can't help how you feel, but I don't understand how anyone can find it funny when someone hurts themselves. I get a weird kind of physical reaction in the base of my spine and feel slightly nauseated when I see a person fall heavily. I watched You've Been Framed once and had to turn it off when it showed people falling and crashing into things.
Of course actors falling in comedies can be hilarious, like Del Boy in OFAH

SolomanDaisy · 26/02/2015 17:36

I've never understood what's funny about it. Clearly lots of people find it hilarious or there wouldn't be all those clip shows of people having accidents. But I just wince for the person. The clips actually make me feel tense.

BankWadger · 26/02/2015 17:36

The time FIL spent a whole bleeding walk telling DH and I to be careful not to slip on the ice, over and over, it was a little funny watching him slip on the ice and go over. He should have paid more attention to himself.

PrettyFeet · 26/02/2015 17:36

Grin at emms.

I used to work on the front desk of a glass fronted building many years ago. Loved the snow. Used to have bets who'd make it to the front door without going flying.

SoupDragon · 26/02/2015 17:37

I find lots of things funnier than people falling over.

Fluffyears · 26/02/2015 17:38

YABU I have see some serious injuries due to tripping over. It always makes me feel anxious and I always help the person up. I hate when someone (especially an elderly person) falls and folk just walk past...ffs help them up it's 2 minutes of kindness!

AlpacaPicnic · 26/02/2015 17:39

It is funny as long as the person isn't hurt - at least nothing but their pride.
Was in my local Starbucks years ago staring out of the window (while DH got my pint of coffee) and a teenage lad was showing off, trying to impress a group of girls by running up the down escalator. He misjudged the top, fell on his face and got carried to the bottom.

I laughed so loudly and longly that I almost peed myself. The worst thing was that nobody else in there had seen, so everyone was looking at me like I was a loon and I was gasping for breath so I couldn't explain myself!

Making people "jump" makes me laugh more than seeing people fall over, I almost wet myself at the facial expressions I have to be honest Grin

Mousefinkle · 26/02/2015 17:43

I don't get it either. It's not remotely funny but clearly many, many people disagree with me...

PiddlePoo · 26/02/2015 17:46

Speaking of Starbucks, I was in my local one a while back when a bloke sitting in the comfy seats stood up really quickly and banged his head on the big light up sign in the window. It made a massive "boinging" sound, and everyone stopped and looked. Yes, someone did ask if he was OK, but I think he was so embarrassed he wanted to get out of their sharpish.
