Cat food saucers in the dishwasher - minging or fine?

Row raging at work over whether putting the saucers you've been feeding the cat from in the dishwasher at 60 degrees is a no brainer or imperilling your family with horrible cat-borne lurgies ... What do you lot think, please?

The thought of it is minging - in reality it is fine

DeanKoontz · 29/01/2015 10:42

It's fine. But I imagine you'll get a lot of people telling you it isn't.

frankie001 · 29/01/2015 10:43

Its fine! More than enough heat in a dishwasher to kill any germs.

SoupDragon · 29/01/2015 10:44

Absolutely fine.

FreckledLeopard · 29/01/2015 10:44

Absolutely fine. All our pet stuff goes in with our "human" stuff and we're all still alive and kicking!

code · 29/01/2015 10:45

It's fine, practically an autoclave. I rinse them first though.

Stinkle · 29/01/2015 10:45

I'm on the 'it's fine' side

I always put the dog/cat bowls in the dishwasher.

InanimateCarbonRod · 29/01/2015 10:46

Fine. Dishwasher is just a large steriliser.

Honsandrevels · 29/01/2015 10:50

I say fine but the 'OMG that's foul' brigade will be along soon I'm sure.

If you can put utensils that have raw chicken in the dishwasher along with other dishes then surely a cat dish is ok?

fatherpeeweestairmaster · 29/01/2015 10:50

Fine. The day I get a separate dishwasher for the dogs is the day the Liz Jones Police can come and cart me off, because I will deserve it.

senua · 29/01/2015 10:50

Eh? You would only be worried if you thought that the dishwasher didn't actually do the job it was designed to do.Confused Some people are weird.

stealthsquiggle · 29/01/2015 10:51

Fine. Assuming people actually come into contact with their cats at some point, any cat-bourne lurgies will be transmitted directly, not via the dishwasher.

LoblollyBoy · 29/01/2015 10:56

Senua has it. Why think you'd do better at preventing cat-catastrophe in the sink?

cailindana · 29/01/2015 10:58

What germs will there be on a cat dish?

HowCanIMissYouIfYouWontGoAway · 29/01/2015 10:59

I think it's fine. It's only food. And dishwashers are bloody hot. They'll get the plates cleaner than handwashing them.

UsedtobeFeckless · 29/01/2015 11:01

Phew ... DP's been doing it for a while and I had a fit when I found out and then thought er ... Why?

I had a total bee in my bonnet when DS1 was small about catching BSE from pet food ( PND - I was mad as a box of frogs but didn't realise for ages ) When I mentioned it at work everyone came down hard on one side or the other but as none of us are particularly sciency I was hoping a knowledgable viper could pronounce one way or the other ... Grin

I honestly can't see why there would be a problem - what do people worry will happen?

melika · 29/01/2015 11:04

No problem what so ever!

babygiraffe86 · 29/01/2015 11:05

food dishes fine, christ surely the litter tray would be more of a worry (i mean just having one, i don't clean that in the dishwasher ahah~) then again though my none cat owner friends find it horrific that i would even think to use a plate which had just had a cat hair on it! :\

shovetheholly · 29/01/2015 11:08

Another one for fine.

DP has started to put water glasses around the house for the cats (one of ours is sick and will only drink out of a glass. They are ridiculously spoiled as we don't have children). Yesterday, I absent-mindedly drank out of one and only realised after I'd swallowed a few gulps. That is PROPERLY MINGING! Shock

LadyPenny · 29/01/2015 11:10

It is fine, I know in my head that it is absolutely ok. I still can't bring myself to actually do it though. I wash them by hand.

bonzo77 · 29/01/2015 11:12

It's fine. As is sharing a water glass with the cat. Well it's fine for me!

Why though Lady? It has genuinely never occurred to me that this could be a problem - what is the worry?

CaptainAnkles · 29/01/2015 11:13

I don't have pets but I see thing wrong with doing that. It washes at such high temperatures that nothing is going to be left on the dishes.
But then, I don't separate out towels from the rest of the washing, and other people seem to think that washing towels that have dried people's clean bodies, along with clothes is revolting. Confused

CaptainAnkles · 29/01/2015 11:14

That should say 'nothing wrong' not 'thing wrong'. Weird phone.
