I don't eat meat and am aware that a lot of meat in this country has been produced with dubious animal welfare standards, but for halal abattoirs to trade on the fact that their meat is 'stun free' ie the animal dies in panic and agony and they promote this, seems very wrong to me.

The British Veterinary Association objects to it too.

but you don't eat meat
so how can you boycott it....Confused

ghostyslovesheep · 29/01/2015 09:31

haha yes boycott away Hmm

I don't eat pork - I will therefore be boycotting bacon

Nancy66 · 29/01/2015 09:33

That's pretty much every supermarket in the UK

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 29/01/2015 09:33

She presumably means she will no longer buy other stuff from shops that sell halal meat and other stuff. Probably not butchers' shops.

Yes OP, boycott what you want.

Please do boycott. Taking a leaf from your book, I'm going to boycott beard trimmers, jockstraps and rhubarb. That'll show'em.

ghostyslovesheep · 29/01/2015 09:35

I'm boycotting voting tory and reading The Sun

SamG76 · 29/01/2015 09:35

OP - are you saying that because Tesco sell halal meat in their Manningham Road branch you'll boycott Tescos nationwide, even for vegetables. That is VVVVU!

OstentatiousBreastfeeder · 29/01/2015 09:35

Hmm

Boycott what you like.

molyholy · 29/01/2015 09:35

You're a vegetarian. Aren't you already boycotting ALL meat anyway Confused. So it's double boycott? Hmm

Hatespiders · 29/01/2015 09:36

No because we buy it! (Muslim dh)

Nancy66 · 29/01/2015 09:37

If you boycott supermarkets and buy your fruit and veg from independent traders then good for you. (you'll pay a lot more though)

TheFairyCaravan · 29/01/2015 09:39

Most shops sell it, so you'd better buy a farm and start producing all your own veg and dairy. If you find a cheap way to make cleaning products and toiletries, let us know!

rootypig · 29/01/2015 09:41

Not necessarily Nancy, local grocers have often proved cheaper for me.

Everyone pouring scorn on the idea of a boycott - some people care deeply where their money goes. A boycott can be effective in changing companies' policies, but it's also about personal integrity. And the arguments about a vegetarian boycotting businesses that sell many things other than meat are just Hmm Confused

Branleuse · 29/01/2015 09:43

i think all slaughtered animals die in fear and panic, and halal is arguably no worse. If you think theres any kindness to stunned meat, youre wrong.

You're already boycotting meat because you know this, but you can obviously shop where you like and boycott where you like.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 29/01/2015 09:45

Well, some people do most of their cleaning with bicarb and vinegar, so that wouldn't be a problem. But actually you can get all those things at health food shops.

I went through a phase of never really going to supermarkets (when I had small dcs and wandering around town with a buggy was as good a way to pass the time as any) and you could get everything somewhere and mostly it cost less. It's just the time factor.

penguinpear · 29/01/2015 09:46

So no one else is bothered that they promote 'non stun' slaughter? You have that much disregard for animals that you don't even care whether or not they die humanely? Nice...

Why all the Hmm and Confused I'm shocked that people can't get their heads around the idea of a vegetarian choosing to boycott shops that sell meat from animals that have been killed in this way, good on you OP.

ghostyslovesheep · 29/01/2015 09:48

well most Halal meat is stunned

how do you feel about Kosher?

is it just Muslim food that bothers you

I doubt being killed is ever nice for an animal

what is you point?

HighwayDragon · 29/01/2015 09:50

I'm boycotting pineapple and baked beans.

your not you

ILovePud · 29/01/2015 09:51

I'm a vegetarian as I feel the whole meat industry is cruel, I think there is varying definitions of Halal though and many Islamic scholars think that stunning is compatible with their beliefs.

Damnautocorrect · 29/01/2015 09:51

I boycott halal restaurants on the animal welfare issue. It is tricky due to the area I live in, but having seen it with my own eyes, there's no need for the additional suffering
