MrsBertMacklin · 27/01/2015 21:54

Slow down and allow them to move into the centre of the road, in readiness for them turning right?

Report
pressone · 27/01/2015 21:55

Wait behind them as I would expect them to be turning right very shortly (just like a car indicating right)

Report
Caronaim · 27/01/2015 21:56

Holding it steady, I would expect him to turn, moving up and down is the signal that he is about to stop.

Report
Fairenuff · 27/01/2015 21:56

I would assume they were indicating that they wanted to move to the right. Is that what happened OP?

Report
MrsBungle · 27/01/2015 21:56

Assume they're about to turn right, wait for them to do so.

Report
Shakirasma · 27/01/2015 21:56

Slow down and let them manuvoure, just as you would never overtake a car which is indicating to turn right.

Johnogroats · 27/01/2015 21:57

Today one person speeded up and overtook me at great speed, but others slowed down and let me join the right lane / turn right.

What happened?

Report
PoppySausage · 27/01/2015 21:57

What happened? I would think turning right and would wait

Report
BarbarianMum · 27/01/2015 21:57

As above. What is the punchline?

Report
SweetsForMySweet · 27/01/2015 21:58

Presume they are signalling to turn right so I would slow down and let them make their maneuver, then proceed on my way when the way is safe to go

Report
BrightestAndBest · 27/01/2015 22:00

They clearly want to turn right. I would therefore slow down and let them cross in front of me to do so I used to cycle a lot, and realise that lots of drivers would ignore them and keep going/accelerate and then slam on their brakes and beep their horn if the cyclist dared to even consider crossing the lane of traffic to turn right

Report
MumOnABike · 27/01/2015 22:00

It's not so much what happened as what happens every single day! Signal to turn right, wait while a steady stream of vehicles pass me on the right hand side until eventually one pauses for long enough to let me turn.

I don't get it! Was begining to think I had made up a hand signal and it wasn't at all obvious what it means!

I am sure most of these wouldn't dream of overtaking a car indicating right

As everyone has said the cyclist is indicating that he/she is going to turn right so best to hang back and let them move across the lane to position themselves to take the turn.

Why are you asking?

Report
MidniteScribbler · 27/01/2015 22:02

I would wait behind them because based on previous experience, I would assume that at some point in the next thirty seconds they will dart across in front of me without looking. And be grateful that on this occasion I actually had some warning of their intentions.

Ummm, slow RIGHT DOWN and expect that at some point they are wanting to turn right. I don't mind if they take a while to wobble to the middle of the road to get there. There's no wing mirrors on bikes....

As far as I am concerned, cyclists can have ALL the time and space in the road as they want. I give them the widest berth possible. There's only a thin bit of fabric between them and the tarmac so that kind of beats my metal cage.

I'm not even a right-on cyclist myself. Although I have always given way to bikes, now I treat them extra extra carefully like the fragile eggs they are on the road.

That is all :)

Report
FreeWee · 27/01/2015 22:02

That's car drivers not having the courtesy to treat a cyclist as they would another car. Must piss you off everyday but if it's any consolation I'd let you turn right, as should everyone.

Then there was the truck driver, who looked like he wasn't going to let me across - so I stayed into the left - but then slowed down so I moved out, at which point he pulled alongside my right to glare at me as if I was in the wrong

Really?

As as cyclist, I normally wait for a gap in the traffic before changing lanes to turn right. If the traffic was really slow moving, I might stick my arm out and hope someone lets me move out in front of them, but if the cars are going faster than me, and there isn't a gap, I would stop and wait for one.

Sometimes, cars see me look over my shoulder, realise I want to turn right, and slow down to let me. It's great when they do that, but I wouldn't be upset if they didn't.

It's another argument why driving licences need to be regularly renewed.
The highway may as well be in Ancient Greek for the number of UK drivers who appear familiar with it's "mysteries".

I do as Pourme does. I'm not confident enough to do as you OP.

Report
MrsTawdry · 27/01/2015 22:24

DH says....you need to be more confident...begin to turn....let them know you're moving across....but we live rurally. Do you live in a city and do you wear hi vis on your wrists?

But there are no gaps in the traffic. Or very few. And if I pull in to wait for one, effectively slowing everyone down by still being an obstruction that needs to be overtaken carefully, I then have to wait for both sides of the road to be clear at the same time to cross in one go

You have the right to stop traffic behind you and signal to turn right...you should be moving in front of the cars behind well before you're turning...be more pushy...but if you feel unsafe...you don't want to be sitting in the middle of the road...maybe you;ll have to put up with it. Are wearing hi vis?

Report
MumOnABike · 27/01/2015 22:27

MrsT, good advice probably. Except the constant stream of traffic means the car behind is too close for me to dare. Would be too risky!

I am v visible with hi vis - including bright yellow trailer - yes to wrist band in poor light, but hasn't been recently.
