AIBU to scoot to work?

I am currently walking 20 minutes each way to work to avoid a daily parking charge and get a bit fitter. DH has suggested I get a fold up bike to save time but I reckon by the time I've unfolded/folded and found somewhere to store at work I won't save any time. I've seen one women scooting and that seems sensible but I'm a bit self conscious .

....as you scoot past traffic jams and don't incurre charges using up all your spare change.

I'm with red, that sounds an awesomely fun way to travel. I would be super jealous if I was walking along and saw someone scooting.

Do they do scooters for adults? There's a huge hill into town here....

That what I would worry about Meloria. Do you feel that way because of scooting a crowded area getting in everyone's way? Or is it just because they look like dicks? Is scooting anymore annoying than cyclists on footpaths as I currently have to avoid those on my way to work.

I would be on quiet footpaths with few people around until I got to my work location.

I does sound like fun, but I'm a bit about scooting on pavements TBH. Don't know what the "rules" are but not much different to cycling on pavements really.

I'd love a 20 min walk to work. That sound like a perfect amount of "me" time to alone and quiet with my thoughts to me. I work across the road and often consider walking round the block first, but of course because I don't need to I don't find the time.

Where I used to live a woman used to take her 2 dd's to school, all of them on scooters. The little one had a micro mini, the eldest a micro scooter and the mum had an adult micro scooter. They always looked to be having lots of fun she was a bit of an oddball though.

I had one about 15 years ago when micro scooters first came out and it was great - cut my 20min walk to work down to a 10 min scoot, and much more fun!

Who cares what people think.

I see a guy round where I work who has what I can only describe as a motorised mini unicycle - sort of a small wheel with a balance board attached and he zooms along the street. I wish I knew what it was called, it is amazing. I would ask him but he is too fast!

FamilyAdventure it's a 20 minute walk on top of a 20 minute drive. With 7 and 4 year olds to wrangle a few extra minutes a day saved would really help.

There's very few people on the pavements so I'm not worried about the safety element. I might just do it. Maybe in dark glasses and a hat so I'm not recognised. It's down hill most of the way back to the car. Reckon I could free wheel in about 5 minutes.

And I don't think there is any problem with scooting on pavements as long as you are considerate - you are not taking up space, you can stop easily - it's really no different to jogging.

Just to clarify, you are talking about a push scooter and not a motorised scooter? If you a talking about one of the ones you stand on, go for it! I saw a woman on a scooter just today, she was about forty five and seemed to be having a great time, no children with her or anything.

I live in New Zealand and it seems to be growing in popularity here. I was on the waterfront a few days ago at about 8am and I saw about five businessmen and one woman on scooters on their way to work.

It it really sensible! You don't get sweaty on a short commute, unlike running/biking (in my experience anyway). Just make sure you buy a scooter that is adult sized otherwise it will be a bit uncomfortable.

How much does a decent adult scooter cost and how much are the daily parking fees?

IME you'll regret buying a cheap one, so how many days will you have to use it before it saves you money? If you don't think you'll stick with it, it might be better just to pay the parking.

But, if you want to do it, don't let what others think put you off. It's fun being a bit eccentric !

They are getting more popular here in SW London. If I was commuting, I would get one with a built in bag too. Much more convenient than a fold up bike and faster than walking.

Do it and ignore people. In 10 years time we'll all be scooting about. You'll see!

I think they just get in the way. An adult shouldn't be cycling on the pavement on the way to work so why should they be on a scooter?

I used a scooter until pregnant to cut a 40 min walk along the thames down to a 15-20 min scoot. Its good fun but good to be careful in the rain as scooter wheels can be slippery! Have never fallen off though. Look for one with the bigger wheels - the smaller wheels can make any gap in the pavements feel like the grand canyon but the bigger wheels roll over them.

My DD's micro scooter goes up to 100kg so most people could use that. The ad says kids scoots to school and you scoot home. I don't see many people do it though. I might try it...

Thanks for the positive comments from most of you. Meloria did you miss the bit where I said very few people are on walking on my route to work? So who's way would I be in??

I think liking like a eccentric weirdo may be worth it to get a few more minutes with my kids.
