AIBU?

To not be able to stand Katharine Jenkins' voice?

Especially in her upper register? I can't understand what words she's supposed to be singing. It gives me the rage, I was always taught in singing lessons and county choir to enunciate clearly. No point in singing if no-one can understand you!

Her lower register's fine, BTW, even if what she does with her lips is just tortuous to watch.

AT LAST!!!!!!!!!! Someone with the same views as me about Ms J's voice.

Chippednailvarnish · 17/12/2014 23:26

I just can't stand her. I know nothing about music or singing but she gives me the rage.

and I have no idea why!

apotatoprintinapeartree · 17/12/2014 23:30

I know what you mean but I find Adele the worst for this, she sounds like Vic Reeves pub singer. You really can't make any words out.

Can anybody remember the last time a good singer came out of this country.
My dd is always looking for good role models and so far has the great Opera singers and Dolly Parton she considers as role models.

Beangarda · 17/12/2014 23:31

No, she's a bland, poor singer with dreadful technique, who scoops and smudges around her upper register and uses reverb to cover mistakes - which I suppose is hardly surprising, as it don't think she finished her training, did she?

I don't begrudge her success, but I do get annoyed when she claims that 'opera snobs' hate her because she's pretty and blonde, and not a fat Wagnerian in a horned headdress, when they just don't take her seriously as a 'classical singer', because she doesn't do it very well.

DandyHighwayman · 17/12/2014 23:32

There was a hatchet job on her once in one of the broadsheet papers, about her appalling technique and rubbish knowledge of opera. It was a total filleting. And true.

Hang on.

robotnikchair · 17/12/2014 23:34

Nails on a blackboard. I can't STAND her

AnneEyhtMeyer · 17/12/2014 23:35

She can't sing and isn't nice. I am astonished she is still popular. In fact I'm astonished she was ever popular.

SingSongSlummy · 17/12/2014 23:36

She's awful as a singer (but very pretty and ashtrays had lovely make up!). Beangarda opera snobs don't hate her because she's pretty and blond, we hate her because she's a crap singer and some of us spent many years and thousands of pounds training at the establishments to perfect our techniques and art. We get pissed off when Jo Public thinks that she is an opera singer. And by the way, quite a lot of us are blond, pretty and slim too!

SingSongSlummy · 17/12/2014 23:38

Always, not ashtrays!!

Beangarda · 17/12/2014 23:39

Singsong, you're misunderstanding me - I'm one of the 'opera snobs' she's complaining about (not a singer, but I go to the opera a lot) and I think she's woeful past belief.

funnyossity · 17/12/2014 23:41

I have said I find Adele sounds like a pub singer but everyone in RL looked at me like this Hmm.

Beangarda · 17/12/2014 23:42

(I'm listening to Elina Garanca in I Capuleti et i Montecchi as we speak... Talking of blonde, pretty, and astonishingly talented.)

SingSongSlummy · 17/12/2014 23:44

Ah, sorry Beangarda, as you were! (Also, Garanca = amazing, especially as Romeo).

squoosh · 17/12/2014 23:45

A friend of mine is an opera singer, I like to mention Ms Jenkins every now and then just to see the amazing eye roll it elicits.

Personally it's the simpering that I find most irritating. She's a world class simperer.

DandyHighwayman · 17/12/2014 23:45

Arse

try again

Mulligrubs · 17/12/2014 23:52

She's a really bad singer, to me it's like nails down a chalkboard.

TinkerbellaPan · 18/12/2014 00:02

dandy I've read that article previously and it is excellent. He uses good examples to demonstrate how she is not that strong a singer for some of the songs she sings.

Why is she popular? I think it is because she is good looking (and that always helps sadly!) and because she makes the sort of music she sings more accessible to people who may not usually listen to it. Sort of opera-lite if that makes sense?

She annoys me too. But I get annoyed by lots of people Grin

Hopefully this should work, Dandy x

She's popular because she's so bland. She offers opera to people who don't really like opera. I've know idea about singing technique but is she any different to Russell Watson or Alfie Bowe - except I like him?

She's always so "happy" as well. It must be quite hard work to be that bland.

shadowfax07 · 18/12/2014 00:38

Quietly, I'd suggest good PR, and being in the right place at the right time. My OH loves her, I have asked if he'd prefer if I left the room when she starts singing, cos I critique her every time.

The one thing that seriously boiled my piss was when she sang in front of a male voice choir and didn't even acknowledge them at the end of the performance.

That to me is unforgivable. The dancers on Strictly refer to and applaud the musicians and the back stage staff, why the fuck couldn't Kathatrine Jenkins turn round and applaud the people/orchestra that had played with her?!?

Her no make up selfie pissed me off. I'm claiming mascara, eyeshadow and lip gloss at the very least.
