By the time she has finished revealing every book she has ever read and every person she has ever communicated with, the sentence might well have been served! What a fiasco......or is it just me?

Has there been any indication how long it will take her to announce the verdict? I want to watch but not if it's on for hours.

She does have to justify her decision and her thinking behind her decision.

But I do have to keep reminding myself that this is a real court of law with a real mans life being affected, and not just entertainment.

It's not daytime TV trash. There isn't a Big Reveal for your viewing pleasure.

She has to sum up her reasoning. If you don't want to hear it, tune back in later.

He has admitted to killing his girlfriend. Be it murder or manslaughter he is guilty. The whole trial is a fast.

Ive yet to understand why this is even on tv. Who sits and watches it? Confused

Is this the second week of waiting to hear the sentence? Reevas family must feel like they are being tortured.

Report
MaidOfStars · 21/10/2014 09:15

It's not the second week of 'waiting'. There have been arguments from both prosecution and defence about appropriate sentences, how the prison system might cope with disabilities, impact statements from family, etc.

Agree that this isn't X factor where they are deliberately pausing for dramatic effect, this is a trial involving someone who killed their partner and they are deciding what punishment he should be given.

Sorry if its boring you Hmm

Five years for a person's life. Sad

I think the judge did a good and fair job of summing up actually. Well-researched and laid out, she had clearly thought it through very carefully - what else can we ask? Very tough to do that in the spotlight.

I think the lack of reaction from either "side" in the public gallery was telling. They both expected jail and will feel the sentence is acceptable.

Five years for a person's life

Given what he was found guilty of (essentially unintentional/accidental but negligent, comparable to something like death by dangerous driving?), I think the sentence seems reasonable.

He will serve 1/6 th of the time (10 months) in priosn, then the remainder under house arrest.

Report
JustSpeakSense · 21/10/2014 09:59

He will only serve 10 months in jail, the rest of his sentence will be served under house arrest.

Horrible horrible horrible things happen to inmates in South African prisons. He may never come out alive.

It was a disgrace what he was actually found guilty of, but in light that I think 5 years is probably a reasonable sentence. But the 10 months thing is unfair.

Imo, he should have been found guilty of murder and got a long prison sentence.

op

It isn't the X Factor, yabu.

To be found guilty of murder there must be evidence the act was pre-meditated. There was no evidence that he had planned to kill Reeva when she came to his home that night.

HTH

JustSpeak except at least one inmate has already given an interview saying how OP will be well looked after in prison, they'll all help him and ensure he has the latest phone, etc. Money and celebrity can make prison an entirely different experience. I have no doubt he will make it out alive Hmm and actually in a very short period of time will be enjoying his comfortable lifestyle yet again . . . unlike Reeva.

Not the point of the thread but i wish they wouldnt refer to him as 'Oscar Pistorius who killed his girlfriend' i wish they would say 'Reeva Steenkamp's killer, Oscar Pistorius'. This isnt his story. It's hers.

Poor Reeva's family. Obviously exhausted beyond exhausted. No wonder they responded to reporters that justice had been done. They can't have anything more to give. They have to let it go and not give fodder to the media in order to stay sane.

Yes I was wondering about Reeva's parents too. I think you're probably right happydays. I'm sure they don't really feel they got justice but perhaps you would never feel that way. They must be relieved it's a prison term at all.
