Just watched tom whots his name make a tart that contained a breichoe (*) a whole pack of butter and a whole pack of sugar. He said it tasted amazing, but that it hardly surprising!

I'd be more impressed if someone made food not laced in fat and sugar taste amazing, that would take skill.

Nigela probably is a low carber too, despite all her talk of her eating whatever she likes.

Yabu, why the BBC?

I also exercise a lot and know that carbs are empty in nutrients and there is much better fuel for my body.

YNBU Tom Kerridge lost 8st this year by cutting carbs, so he should have a few low carb recipes

I'd rather eat healthy carbs than overload on fat - but each to their own

"know that carbs are empty in nutrients"

No, they are not.

As several low-carber gluten-intolerance-pretender friends found out when their hair started falling out.

No way is Nigella low anything. That woman understands about food and what you need to eat to be healthy and happy.

Low carb is not a good diet. Low or no anything is not a good diet.

Tom Kerridge was interviewed on the radio and said a big part of his weight loss was down to cutting out beer drinking.

The Hairy Bikers had one a few years ago: "How to Love Food and Lose Weight".

Jamie's Comfort Food this year seems quite indulgent. I wouldn't be surprised for balance if "Jamie's Diet" is the follow up next year. (Like Thirty Minute Meals was followed in the next book by a recipe for 12 hour rabbit bolognese).

Personally I think that if you want flavour without the calories then you should go for Asian flavours. The taste of ginger, garlic chillies in Asian food really get my taste buds going without the calories.

Hugh F-W's new book is all about non-gluten, non-dairy stuff so expect some series at some point.

Well, that could be considered cutting carbs, wowfudge. Grin

I agree, it would be nice to have a programme giving a healthier slant to cooking. I love the indulgent stuff, but it's not practical for every day cooking. Not sure about specifically low carbing though.

In 'How to Eat' Nigella has a chapter called 'Temple Food' or some such that is all about her reining it in. Lots of Asian broths etc. Personally I don't watch cookery shows for diet tips - it's pure food porn for me.

I thought some of Tom Kerridges recipes looked disgusting, they made me feel sick watching it. When he made that treacle tart I turned off .

Both DH and I did low carbing last year. We both lost weight, but as with any diet as soon as you start eating a more balanced diet, the weight comes back on again. Also DH also had an awful bout of gout, which the dr said could have been brought on by Lcarbing- too much red meat.

I think the only way to lose weight AND keep it off is to eat a balanced diet, but to watch portion size and obviously processed food. Just don't go down the supermarket aisle with crisps, sweets and processed biscuits/cakes etc and you won't go far wrong.

Giles

Low carb is not a good diet. Low or no anything is not a good diet.

Low sugar? Low alcohol? These are definitely good. The detrimental health effects of too much sugar and alcohol is well understood.

Regarding carbs, you can lose weight low carbing. I know because I have done it. I took magnesium supplements to readdress what nutrients. Could not so easily get without waiting carbs. Any weight loss diet is not really suitable long term though IMO.

For me low carbing did make the reassess what level and type of carbohydrate is healthy for me though. It is not healthy to keep on gaining weight, especially around the middle. Exercise helped but not enough. I don't think it is healthy either to have to exercise for hours everyday either and can take a toll in your joints etc too.

Historically, I think the low carbing now, has corrected some of the carb excesses coming out of the food fads of the 80s, which cut fat , did not emphasise the importance of protein enough and recommended filling up on carbs.

There was a low calorie cooking program series on one of the cooking channels a few months ago (cant remember the name). DD3 and i caught it a few times and would laugh our arses off watching this woman make a roast dinner using, it seemed, mainly water - YUM! - and telling us how delicious it really was. She also showed tastey snacks along the lines of 'salt and peppered lettuce'. All very commendable but soul destroying to watch.

Oh just to add i lost about2 and a half stone in just a few weeks a few years ago low carbing. Never felt so good. The weight does not fly back on when you stop unless you start to be a pig. I put some back on recently due to having DD4 and am low carbing again to get it off.
