AIBU?

To ask for my money back and leave my food in Greggs

I know I'm going to be told I was unreasonable for shopping in Greggs in the first place, I'm even more quick tempered/lacking patience than normal ATM so I'm doubting myself and wondering if I was being unreasonable .

So I only work the 10 -2 and as such have no lunch break and often go without until 5, simply cos I'm not all that hungry, my line manager however does encourage me to pop out and get a sandwich around 12 ish as everyone is eating around then.

Yesterday I went out on a work errand and called in to Greggs on the way back just a sandwich, can and cake, I handed over a £10 note and the lad serving looked confused then called er I've got no £5 notes, to someone serving some one else. Now it's not an official break I don't like being out of the office that long, but he just stares at the till, so I say can you just give me the change in pound coins I need to get back to work. He nods and carries on staring at the till until the person he's called too goes yes I'll get you some £5 notes then he hands me the change in pound coins which he clearly could have done 5 minutes before. So ok I'm slightly annoyed by left with my food and change.

Anyway today I was really looking forward to lunch today it's such a rarity the same lad was serving again sandwich out of the fringe with the can I picked up myself and a bun, he placed all my items in a bag and said how much it would be and handed me the bag, I again handed over £10 note he stared at the till with it in his hand and then went er what did you buy again, confused as he'd just told me how much it was I asked what he was asking he said what's in the bag? The bag he's just packed and handed me. So I place the bag on the counter and say please give me my money back I'll go somewhere else! It was more the fact he had been similarly slow yesterday that annoyed me most and it probably was a little stroppy.

I almost felt like going back to the office without anything, ended up with a sandwich I didn't really like, just wonder if I allowed my stress levels to raise unnecessarily!

Yep I think you did.

The guy may be new and nervous. It's not his job to serve you at lightening speed. I'd have been slightly irked but I wouldn't have stormed off.

It sounds like someone who is being trained and isn't very good at working out change yet. I'd say you should be more patient with trainees but I probably would've done the same thing. And if it's during a lunchtime rush they should have more people serving anyway.

Oh my goodness, the poor lad!

I can understand (there is a slow-moving, dotty woman in our local Co-op and I DREAD her serving me) but it sounds like this guy is new. You call him a "lad", was he quite young?

Shonajay · 01/10/2014 15:57

He's probably terrified now and will be even slower. You sound uptight and stressed and taking it out on,others isn't fair.

It wouldn't have bothered me, I'd be inclined to think he's either new or just a slow worker, at least he has a job and isn't fussy about working in places like Greggs.

I have teenage nieces and nephews and some of their friends won't apply for McDonald's, Greggs, Burger King etc because it's chavvy apparently Hmm

He may have Aspergers or a learning difficulty. Learn some patience or get your food elsewhere.

could you not have just answered his question and paid surely it took longer to leave Go somewhere else pick up other items and pay?

Aww poor lad. I'm kind of the opposite to you OP. I get blustered with fast servers. I remember in New York getting shouted at by the bloke behind the counter because I didn't give my order fast enough Blush

I was going to write what Dawndonnaagain wrote - I think you were quite mean actually.

I thought you were going to say he spat in your sandwich and told you to fuck off Hmm

Yes, you are being spectacularly ur, and stamped your foot like a child. Your impatient and superior attitude (which is how it's coming across on here) probably made him nervous and slower.

It's hardly a rarity. You were there yesterday.

There was a lad like that in my local Starbucks. I felt awkward and sorry for him. Three weeks later he's full of confidence, chatting to the customers and shouting 'can I get a drink started for you' etc and even attempting a bit of small talk.

Give him a chance.

So after storming out of Greggs I suppose you went somewhere else for your sandwich? So no time saved by your actions then.

I think it's entirely up to you whether you complete the purchase or change your mind. You weren't aggressive or rude, so not unreasonable in my view.

Well that's why I asked because er yes I am pretty stressed ATM, work ironically is my place of safety, not going to post why cos I'm not sure that condones my attitude, although it does explain my short temper.

I'm aspergers myself and I did yesterday consider that myself, so that makes me even more annoyed at myself dawndonna

Rubbish at judging faces, but yes cherry I'd say quite young.

Yes I.m aware it's chavvy, but when it's the only bakery in the town, well the only one that doesn't use yesterday's bread, and you have about 10 minutes to get lunch (I eat back in the office) it does!

you can always judge a person by how they treat shop staff and waitresses

Poor bloke, like others have said he is probably new and learning. I think you sound quite rude. You being stressed at work is not his concern. Now he is probably stressed at work because of people like you.

Greggs is not 'chavvy'

Get over yourself again.

Report
bronymum · 01/10/2014 16:20

I can't say it wouldn't have annoyed me, especially if I was in a hurry. I think that I would bring my own sandwich if I didn't have much time to get out to buy one though.

I'm impatient but I think YABU. He might be new.You sound very stressed out to let something like this make you so annoyed.

Yes it is a rarity which is why my line manager encourages me to go yesterday I was told (jokingly) to not come back unless I had a bacon sandwich (they eat bacon sandwiches about 11. I do not) to wave at my colleagues I can go weeks without eating till 5/6/7 and that's without breakfast!
bronymum no I didn't exactly my point!
